Tariff truce sparks hopes for Halloween orders in China
YIWU, CHINA: A tariff truce between the United States and China is helping kickstart the resumption of trade between the countries but for manufacturers of Halloween decorations in the eastern Chinese city of Yiwu feelings are mixed.President Donald Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports, which reached 145% in April, prompted waves of U.S. customers to suspend or delay orders for festive decorations, disrupting business for the likes of Lou Xiaobo, whose company Xubo relies on the U.S. for 20% of sales. The 25-year-old, whose family has been making Halloween decorations in Yiwu for 28 years, warned they would have to scramble to produce and ship their hanging skeletons and costume props to America in time for the October 31 holiday.Customers are weighing up the cost of the new 30% tariff rate and although he is expecting orders, Lou is also warning customers his business cannot produce more complex made-to-order products in time."I don't think because tariffs are lowered; we should be happy, because they have already delayed our production time," he told Reuters from his family's store at Yiwu's sprawling wholesale market."In these two months we have lost (to tariffs), we can produce about 500,000 yuan of goods, but now I only have 200,000 yuan...I'm not happy just because tariffs have been lowered."His comments point to how the damage has been done for many Chinese manufacturers that rely on the U.S. market. While they say the truce has brought hope that orders will return, uncertainty still exists given the current 90-day time limit on lower tariffs and the Trump administration's unpredictability.China manufactures the majority of festive decorations the U.S. buys, not just for Halloween but for other events such as the Fourth of July and Christmas."The tariffs were implemented at the utmost worst time for the Halloween manufacturer, as product was either finished and on a boat being held up, or in some stage of production that was halted," said Robert Berman , a board member of the Halloween and Costume Association and the CEO of Imposta Costumes."China for many in the Halloween industry creates a one and done system," he added. "Yes, we can diversify and find new countries, but this will take years, and many of us are too far along to make any changes for 2025."Another exporter of Halloween masks, who only gave her surname as Ma, said she was hopeful that customers would now place orders, though she believes her overall exporting business turnover will be much lower than last year."If people order now, to ship it in June or July, it probably won't be too late, but if we don't have these in stock, which means they have to be made to order, we won't be able to get them in stock for Halloween," she said."Anyway, I definitely hope they don't start up the trade war again!"

Top Gainers and Losers on Aug 13: NMDC Steel, JM Financial, HBL Engineering, Bharat Dynamics, BSE among top gainers
Indian stocks ended higher in Wednesday's trading session (August 13), with benchmark indices gaining over half a percent after a tamer-than-expected US inflation report raised the possibility that the Federal Reserve could cut interest rates next month. Domestic inflation continued to soften for the ninth straight month, hitting the lowest level since 2017 at 1.55%, below analysts' estimates. This also raised expectations of an interest rate cut by the central bank, lifting rate-sensitive stocks, including auto and realty counters. The Nifty 50 finished 0.54% higher at 24,619, while the S&P BSE Sensex gained 0.38% to settle at 80,539. The broader markets outperformed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices each closing with gains of over 0.60%. Domestic brokerage Motilal Oswal noted in a recent report that falling oil prices, now at a two-month low of USD 66 per barrel, and optimism over a potential breakthrough in the August 15 US–Russia talks on a Ukraine ceasefire are further boosting investor confidence. Meanwhile, soft US inflation data release reassured investors, who had feared that President Donald Trump's broad tariff policies could push up prices in the US economy. The consumer price index rose 2.7% YoY in July. Traders are now pricing in a more than 90% probability of a Fed rate cut in September, with rising odds for additional cuts in October and December. Expectations of a Fed rate cut also pressured the US Dollar Index, which dropped below 98 against a basket of currencies on Wednesday. The greenback came under further pressure after White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump is considering legal action against Fed Chair Jerome Powell over his handling of renovations at the central bank's headquarters, comments that fueled concerns about the Fed's independence.

Trump to visit Kennedy Center, announce names of 2025 honorees
Trump plans to renovate the arts venue Trump fired chairman in February and assumed the role Bill introduced to rename Kennedy Center for Trump WASHINGTON, Aug 13 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump will visit the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday to unveil its 2025 honorees for artistic excellence and tout a major renovation as lawmakers push to rename the venue for the Republican president. In a post on his Truth Social platform on Tuesday, Trump teased the announcement, saying, "GREAT Nominees for the TRUMP/KENNEDY CENTER, whoops, I mean, KENNEDY CENTER, AWARDS." Trump also teased a physical overhaul of the center in Washington, D.C., saying he planned to restore it to the "absolutely top level of luxury, glamour, and entertainment." No details were immediately available. Since returning to power in January, Trump has sought to put his stamp on American culture and institutions to align them closer with his political and personal preferences. His administration has ordered a review of some Smithsonian museums and exhibitions to "remove divisive or partisan narratives." At the White House, Trump has added gold leaf to the Oval Office, paved over the Rose Garden, and embarked on plans for a $200-million ballroom. Trump did not attend events at the Kennedy Center during his first term but has taken a keen interest in it during his second, vowing to overhaul an institution he and his "Make America Great Again" supporters view as too liberal. He pushed out its chairman in February and took on the role himself, fired its longtime president, and installed his former ambassador to Germany, Richard Grenell, as interim president. In a post on X, the Kennedy Center said its building - which opened in September 1971 - would undergo renovations thanks to Trump's advocacy aimed at restoring its "prestige and grandeur." The arts facility also hinted at the 2025 winners: "A country music icon, an Englishman, a New York City Rock band, a dance Queen and a multi-billion dollar Actor walk into the Kennedy Center Opera House…." Republicans recently voted as part of a sweeping tax cut and spending bill to earmark $257 million for the building's renovation, conditional on the opera house being named after first lady Melania Trump. Republican Representative Bob Onder in July introduced a bill that would rename the modernist building the Donald J. Trump Center for the Performing Arts. Trump last visited the Kennedy Center in June for a performance of "Les Miserables," where he and his wife were met with a loud mix of boos and cheers. Ticket and subscription sales have fallen since Trump's conservative takeover of the venue, and some shows, including the hit "Hamilton," have canceled their engagements. Under his leadership, the center has sought to add conservative-leaning programming, including a show that Grenell has described as a celebration of the birth of Christ.
