Mumbai man asks Reddit if he should quit Rs 40,000 job to support wife's business

India Today7 days ago
A Mumbai-based man sought advice from Reddit users on whether to leave his 40,000 job and join his wife's growing business. His post on the subreddit r/Mumbai was titled: "Should I quit my job, but I'm scared. Need advice." "Hi Reddit, I (26M) from Mumbai need some genuine advice," the post read, adding, "I'm at a critical decision point and not sure what the right move is," the man said. advertisementThe user explained that he currently earns Rs 40,000 per month working from home, which also allowed him to manage his late father's small, seasonal business. His father passed away in January, and since then, he has been the sole provider for his family. He acknowledged that while they are financially stable and have all the basic needs, the emotional and mental toll has been significant.
He went on to share that six months ago, he helped his wife launch a digital marketing agency: "She's incredibly talented and driven, and today she's earning nearly 1 Lakh per month from the business. But the workload is now overwhelming for her; she's handling everything alone."However, the pressure had affected the quality of their work, leading to a loss of clients. The user said that he had skills in cinematography, editing, and creative direction, which could help improve the agency's offerings if he were to join full-time."If I join her full-time, I know I can help scale the agency to 2 Lakh per month or more. We already have client interests, we just can't keep up with quality and delivery. But here's the thing: I'm scared," he wrote. He expressed concerns about losing financial stability, especially since he had already experienced financial hardship in the past, and the couple was now planning to expand their family."So I'm torn between choosing stability and betting on our own brand. Would really appreciate thoughts from anyone who's faced similar choices, or even just an outside perspective," he concluded.Take a look at the post here:The post quickly drew responses from Reddit users offering encouragement and advice. "Take the dive, bro. You have two income sources to fall back on if you quit your job. You all have a house and a car, so I don't think you all will need a loan anytime soon. What if it works out?" said a user.Another user added, "You're lucky to have your digital agency running. Join your wife and scale it. You won't regret it. Rs 40,000 isn't much anyway. Also, let me know if you need help with any marketing verticals — I tried to start an agency with my friend, but he backed out."advertisementHowever, not everyone agreed. One of the users, "Seems like too big a risk, considering the upside is only Rs 60,000 more per month. Plus, the digital marketing industry is so saturated that clients will leave you over the smallest discount. I'm sorry you lost your father. I know what that feels like. You already have a lot on your plate. And what good is money if we end up going insane to earn it?"The post left users divided, with many offering support, advice, and personal perspectives, while others urged him not to take such a big risk.- EndsMust Watch

Earning Rs 1 Lakh But Still Broke? How ‘Lifestyle Inflation' Eats Up Your Salary

Last Updated: Ten years ago, Rs 1 lakh had the value of about Rs 2 lakh today. Rising costs and inflation, often outpacing 6–8% annual salary hikes, have sharply reduced purchasing power Earning Rs 1 lakh a month once symbolised financial success, easily covering expenses, savings, and leisure. But in today's big cities, rising costs mean the amount disappears fast after rent, groceries, and a few outings. Many high earners still feel financially strained, with lifestyle changes, rising inflation, and social pressures leaving even those earning lakhs through hard work struggling to save. Strain On The Wallet The main factor is lifestyle inflation. As salaries rise, so do expenses. What was once a modest 1 BHK and home-cooked meals now gives way to better-located flats, Netflix subscriptions, frequent dining out, and weekend getaways. Many feel they have earned these comforts, but spending often grows faster than income, with social media comparisons further driving the urge to splurge. Rising Cost Of Living In Big Cities Another significant factor is the cost of living in big cities. In places like Mumbai or Bengaluru, rent can consume 30 to 50 percent of one's salary. For instance, if one earns Rs 1 lakh in Mumbai, a normal 1 BHK flat might cost Rs 35,000, with additional expenses like electricity and internet (Rs 3,500), groceries and dining out (Rs 10,000), daily travel (Rs 4,000), subscriptions and entertainment (Rs 2,000), clothing and personal care (Rs 3,000), and other expenses (Rs 5,000). Any EMI or credit card bills would add another Rs 10,000. At the end of the month, just Rs 27,500 remains, making saving or investing difficult. In contrast, in smaller cities like Bhopal, lower rent and lifestyle costs allow more savings even with a Rs 50,000 salary. Impact Of Inflation A decade ago, a Rs 1 lakh salary had the same value as about Rs 2 lakh today. Rising costs of food, fuel, healthcare, and education have eroded purchasing power, with inflation often outpacing the 6–8% yearly salary hikes. Spending Fueled By Comparisons Social media plays a significant role in spending. Platforms like Instagram showcase luxurious lifestyles, including brunches, holidays, and new cars, making individuals feel their lives are inferior. This leads to 'comparison-driven spending," where people increase their expenses to match perceived standards. Mental Pressure Mental pressure is another factor. Earning Rs 1 lakh a month disqualifies individuals from government schemes, yet it isn't enough to build wealth without financial discipline. Fear of job loss or medical emergencies looms large, especially without an emergency fund or health insurance. Smart Ways To Save Money Saving money starts with setting aside 20–30% of the monthly salary for investments in SIPs or mutual funds. Unnecessary expenses like frequent dining out or multiple subscriptions should be reduced. An emergency fund covering 4–6 months of expenses can provide security, while avoiding debt, especially high-interest loans, helps maintain stability. Financial success depends on consistent savings, wise investments, and effective expense management. First Published: News business Earning Rs 1 Lakh But Still Broke?
