July 10 (UPI) -- A Michigan man won a $500,000 lottery prize thanks to his local store being sold out of the ticket he had originally intended to buy.
The 57-year-old Tuscola County man told Michigan Lottery officials he had a specific scratch-off game in mind when he visited the Speedway on West Caro Road in Caro.
"I stopped at the gas station to buy a Triple Red 777s ticket, but they were sold out, so I told the cashier to give me a Detroit Tigers ticket instead," the player recalled. "It was hard to believe when I saw I'd won $500,000, but after looking the ticket over several times, I told myself it must be real."
The man said he needed a second opinion to fully believe his luck.
"I signed the ticket and took it back into the store to have the cashier check it. After she scanned it, she handed it back and said: 'Looks like you have to go to Lansing for this one!' Winning $500,000 is an answered prayer and still hasn't fully sunk in."
The winner said his prize money will go toward helping his family and investing.

South Korea sees record growth in birth rate this year

South Korea saw its largest-ever gain in birth rate over the first five months of 2025, its statistics agency said Wednesday. File Photo by Yonhap/EPA-EFE SEOUL, July 23 (UPI) -- South Korea recorded its largest-ever gain in birth rate over the first five months of the year, its statistics agency said Wednesday, in a slight respite from a looming demographic crisis. The cumulative number of births from January through May reached 106,048, up by 6.9% over the same period last year, according to data from Statistics Korea. It represents the highest rate of increase since data collection began in 1981. Some 20,309 babies were born in May, up 3.8% from the 19,567 babies born one year ago. The on-year increase was the largest since May 2011, when the figure grew by 5.3%. The number of births has risen for 11 consecutive months, the agency said. May's fertility rate was 0.75, up 0.02 from a year earlier. The news follows on the heels of South Korea registering an annual growth in birth rate for 2024, driven in part by a boom in postponed marriages following the COVID-19 pandemic. Officials have also cited the impact of government incentives and demographic trends as contributing to the birth rate boost. In particular, the number of people in their early 30s -- a key childbearing age -- has grown. Despite the modest increase, South Korea's birth rate remains the lowest in the world. Its 2024 fertility rate of 0.75 means that for every 100 women, just 75 babies are expected to be born over their lifetimes. That mark is half the average rate of the 38 members of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. A fertility rate of 2.1 is considered the level needed to keep a population from declining. In an effort to reverse the trend, the South Korean government has introduced various policies to encourage marriage and support child-rearing, including financial incentives for new parents and expanded parental leave and childcare assistance.

U.S. sanctions Houthi petroleum smuggling network

The U.S. Treasury under Secretary Scott Bessent sanctioned two people and five companies on Tuesday on accusations of being a Houthi petroleum smuggling network. File Photo by Yuri Gripas/UPI | License Photo July 23 (UPI) -- The United States has blacklisted two Yemeni nationals and five companies on accusations of laundering money and importing petroleum products for the Houthi rebels. The Houthis, also known as Ansarallah, work with privately owned companies to ensure continued shipments of petroleum products into areas of Yemen under their control. On Tuesday, the U.S. Treasury sanctioned Muhammad Al-Sunaydar, 38, and three companies his connected to, as well as Yahya Mohammed Al Wazir, 44, and two of his companies, for facilitating those petroleum product transactions. "The Houthis collaborate with opportunistic businessmen to reap enormous profits from the importation of petroleum products and to enable the group's access to the international financial system," Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender said in a statement. "These networks of shady businesses underpin the Houthis' terrorist machine, and Treasury will use all tools at its disposal to disrupt these schemes." The long proxy war between Iran and Israel exploded into the open on Oct. 7, 2023, when Hamas, another Iran-backed militia, attacked Israel. Israel responded by devastating the Palestinian enclave of Gaza. Since November 2023, the Houthis have enforced a maritime blockade of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden, attacking vessels, including U.S. military ships that transit the important trade route, in solidarity with the Palestinians, nearly 60,000 of whom have been killed by Israel. The United States, under both the Biden and Trump administrations, has been hammering the Houthis with sanctions, seeking to corrode their ability to make war, with President Donald Trump re-designating the Iran-proxy militia as a foreign terrorist organization in January. "The United States is committed to disrupting the Houthis' illicit revenue generation by maintaining pressure on the financial facilitators that fuel the Houthi enterprise," State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said in a statement. "Today's action builds on a series of measures targeting Houthi revenue generation and weapons procurement, reaffirming our resolve to counter terrorism, promote regional security and uphold freedom of navigation."
