DYFI demands solution for language volunteers' issues
G Ramanna, DYFI state secretary, highlighted the plight of 1,327 language volunteers across 7 ITDA (Integrated Tribal Development Agency) areas, who are struggling to support their families on a meager honorarium of just Rs. 5,000 per month.
DYFI representatives submitted a memorandum to M M Naik, principal secretary of tribal welfare department and the additional director of tribal welfare on Monday at the Secretariat, pressing for immediate action.
Ramanna stressed the urgent need for the state government to provide minimum wages of Rs 26,000 to these volunteers and ensure their job security. He also demanded the annual issuance of a Government Order (GO) for their renewal each academic year.
Language volunteers are instrumental in implementing the Mother Tongue-Based Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) programme across Andhra Pradesh since 2007. They teach in tribal mother tongues such as Savara, Kuravi, Konda, Adivasi Oriya, Koya, and Sugali, in addition to Telugu, English, and Hindi, in schools ranging from MPPS, UPS, GES, and GUPS. This approach has significantly reduced student dropout rates and encouraged children to stay in school. Currently, 1,122 schools across the state conduct education in tribal mother tongues for grades 1 to 5, benefiting approximately 52,000 children. The DYFI highlighted the inconsistent renewal of these volunteers' services, noting that after a period of non-renewal post-state bifurcation in 2014, they were renewed briefly in 2019 but stopped again in the 2022 academic year. While the previous government renewed them from August to February in 2023 following protests, their services were discontinued in March and April. The volunteers have confirmed that their renewals have resumed from July this academic year under the new coalition government.
Ramanna stressed that many language volunteers possess D.Ed and B.Ed qualifications, along with Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) certification. He demanded that they be recognised as CRT contract employees and called for the reinstatement of G.O. No. 3 and the release of a Special DSC notification for their regularisation. Kunj Naveen, State Secretary of the Language Volunteers Association, along with Lalitha, Nagamani, Kiran, Sagar, Bhavani, Roja, Uma Maheswari, Sai Vennela, and others were present.

THE CBI is 'cherry picking' to target the family of former Bihar chief minister and RJD chief Lalu Prasad in the land for jobs 'corruption' case, argued his lawyer before a Delhi Court on Friday. Lalu and his family have been accused by the CBI of enabling the recruitment of candidates for Group D railway substitute jobs who had allegedly transferred them land parcels as a quid pro quo. 'They're trying to dig deep to open all threads against the family… They're trying to link their names somehow,' argued Senior Advocate Maninder Singh, who is representing Lalu's daughters Misa Bharti and Hema Yadav. Singh was accompanied in court by advocate Aekta Vats. 'The land sales were years apart from the dates when the jobs were given… How can the CBI connect the two,' he argued before Special Judge Vishal Gogne of Rouse Avenue Courts. 'In three days, the Pacific Ocean changed due to the tsunami… multiple years is a long long time to wait.' 'This case seems to be the interpretation of one gentleman who sits in a room determined to point out that something was wrong,' the advocate said. 'The CBI has said there were no requirements for the jobs and that there was no urgency… Has any (land) seller ever told them they were under pressure from Lalu Prasad,' Singh asked the court. Singh also said while there were 103 accused persons in the case, there was a mention of just 12 land parcels in the chargesheets. Earlier last month, the CBI which was represented in court by Senior Advocate and Special Public Prosecutor D P Singh and Advocate Manu Mishra, had argued that Lalu had threatened Railway Ministry officials to speed up the recruitment process. The CBI case pertains to the alleged transfer of land at cheap rates to the RJD chief and his family in return for appointments made in Group-D substitute jobs in the Central Railways between 2004 and 2009, when Lalu was the Railway Minister. In its multiple chargesheets, the CBI has claimed that there were several discrepancies in the documents furnished by those who were given jobs in exchange for land such as candidates having sequential roll numbers on their caste and residence certificates. As per the CBI, Lalu had earlier acquired over 1 lakh square feet of land for only Rs 26 lakh as against the circle rate of over Rs 4.39 crore.

‘UP saw dismantling of criminal network under Yogi in 8 years'
Lucknow: Highlighting the "immense changes" in law and order in the state since the BJP came to power in 2017, a govt spokesperson outlined the condition of Uttar Pradesh before 2017 and now. Following CM Yogi Adityanath's rise to power, the administration initiated a series of decisive actions to dismantle the criminal network that had taken root. Since the BJP came to power, there was a surge in police action against gangsters, seizure of illegal properties, and court trials were fast-tracked. There was a crackdown on unlawful religious conversions and the drug mafia. This, said the official, saw a sharp decline in criminal activity. "Under its zero-tolerance policy on crime, the state govt over the past eight years has seen over 240 dangerous criminals being killed in police encounters. During this time, the police carried out more than 15,000 encounters, arresting over 30,000 criminals. More than 9,000 criminals were injured in these operations," said the official. The govt cracked down on illegal properties of criminals, which broke the backbone of the mafia network and boosted public trust in the govt. As per govt data, illegal assets worth more than Rs 14,200 crore were seized or destroyed over the past eight years. Under 'Operation Conviction', about 1 lakh criminals have been convicted so far, which includes nearly 10,000 criminals sentenced to life imprisonment for crimes like rape, murder, and organised crime. Another 68 criminals have been sentenced to death. On average, courts are resolving 143 cases daily and punishing 187 criminals each day thanks to strong legal efforts, the official added. To crack down on the illegal drug trade, the govt has carried out large-scale operations, which include raids on fake liquor factories and inter-state mafia networks. Illegal liquor has been destroyed, and thousands of smugglers were arrested. An Anti-Narcotics Task Force was also set up, which has helped in the recovery of illegal drugs worth over Rs 2,737 crore and the registration of more than 30,000 cases. The govt went all out against illegal conversions, passing the UP Prohibition of Unlawful Religious Conversion Act, 2021, under which hundreds of people have been arrested, and several organised conversion rackets have been busted, claimed the official, citing the recent crackdown on Jalaluddin alias Changur, a key accused in an illegal religious conversion network. The state govt's policy, which the CM reiterates publicly at every occasion, is that a criminal will either be in jail in UP or out of the state.

No Demolition Without Pucca Houses: CM
New Delhi: Chief minister Rekha Gupta issued orders on Friday to all departments, including the railways and Delhi Development Authority, that no slum will be demolished in the city unless its residents are provided with pucca houses. Gupta said Delhi govt would amend the existing policy on JJ clusters, if required, and even move court to protect the housing rights of slum-dwellers. She added that nearly 50,000 flats built years ago for the economically weaker section (EWS) in outer areas of the city under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission would be renovated for slum dwellers. "Slums in Delhi are an inseparable part of the national capital, with residents living there for decades," Criticising the opposition for using slum-dwellers as a political vote bank, Gupta asserted her govt was making sincere efforts to ensure their rightful recognition as residents of Delhi. "The chief minister has announced that these flats will now be handed over to slum dwellers under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban. DUSIB and DSIIDC were allocated Rs 732 crore for housing, which remained unutilised and was to be returned to the Centre. Central govt has now approved their use for the renovation of these dilapidated flats," said an official. Gupta accused the previous govts of treating slum dwellers as a vote bank. "These settlements neither have drinking water nor roads, pavements, proper drainage and sewage system," CM said. AAP Delhi convener Saurabh Bharadwaj said CM and her party were "bluffing" the slum dwellers for many months now. "If Rekha Gupta is actually serious about what she is saying, she should ask central govt and its agencies to withdraw the cases against these JJ clusters in the high court and Supreme Court," Bharadwaj said. "On one hand, these agencies are going to the courts against poor people; on the other hand, they are not even providing them with any alternative places to live," he claimed.
