Unplugging these two items today will reduce energy bills 'significantly'

Energy experts believe these are the worst two appliances to leave on standby.
UK householders are being advised to immediately unplug two electrical items in their homes to reduce energy bills 'significantly'. Energy experts believe they have discovered two of the 'worst' appliances for homeowners to leave on standby, claiming switching them off will save them up to £50 per year.

Experts at Grant Store said TVs and satellite TV boxes – use up a 'surprising amount' of power even when they are not being used and are left on standby mode.

The warning comes after Ofgem recently confirmed the price cap - from the start of July to the end of September - will fall from £1,849 to £1,720, a saving of £129 over the year. Despite the the drop, energy bills this July are still 10 per cent higher than they were at this time last year.

Switching off these devices completely rather than leaving them in standby mode could provide a financial boost to many cash-strapped households.
'Televisions are among the worst household culprits for standby energy consumption,' explain the energy experts at Grant Store.

'Even when not in use, they can still draw up to 20 watts of electricity. Over the course of a year, that could add around £30 to your energy bill, just for something that isn't even on.'
Satellite TV boxes are another commonly overlooked device that continues to use power unless switched off at the wall.
According to the experts, set-top boxes such as Sky or Virgin Media devices can contribute a further £20 annually to your energy bills if left in standby mode.

'The issue with set-top boxes is that many people assume they need to be left on to record or update, but that's rarely necessary unless you're actively using those functions,' the team at Grant Store add.
'If you're not watching TV, turn both the box and the television off at the plug. It's a simple habit that could save households money and cut unnecessary energy waste.'

As the cost of living continues to impact households, especially pensioners and vulnerable people, energy-saving tips like these are gaining attention for their ease and effectiveness.
Experts also recommend looking at device settings to reduce standby consumption, such as activating eco modes or automatic power-down features.
'With energy prices still high, these small changes really do add up over time. They're especially useful for those who might not realise how much energy is being drained from devices they're not even using,' Grant Store's experts conclude.

Householders were also recently warned of an energy-saving hack over fears it could cause a fire in their homes overnight. Experts urged cash-strapped households not to run powerful household appliances overnight in a bid to save money, as the risk of fire could far outweigh the financial benefit.
According to energy experts at Grant Store, using appliances like washing machines, tumble dryers, and dishwashers while you sleep could leave you vulnerable to devastating fires, especially when no one is awake to respond quickly to a fault.
Some households on off-peak energy tariffs may be tempted to run these high-powered devices during the night, when electricity prices are lower. But experts say this growing trend, often referred to as an 'energy bill hack,' comes with serious risks.

OVO Energy announces 'critical' update that will benefit millions of UK customers

The energy firm is set to stage an energy summit aimed at boosting the Labor Government's community energy ambitions, with millions of UK households set to benefit. OVO Energy is gearing up to host an energy summit aimed at strengthening the Labour Government's community energy ambitions. Just last week, OVO teamed up with Kerry McCarthy, Bristol East MP and Climate Minister, to gather policy makers, industry experts and leading green businesses. ‌ The collective groups discussed the urgent need to speed up community energy development. MP McCarthy underscored the crucial role of community energy in achieving the Labour Government's clean power targets, while also providing tangible benefits to constituents and businesses throughout her area. ‌ Attendees explored how community-led energy projects, from solar panels to local wind initiatives, can tackle the climate crisis while enhancing local job opportunities, boosting resilience, and fostering innovation, potentially benefiting millions of UK households in the future. ‌ This comes on the heels of OVO's introduction of People Powered: How Communities Can Fund and Sell Their Own Power, a guidebook aimed at making community energy more accessible to the average person. The manual offers practical advice on funding, regulatory compliance, and community engagement, aiming to overcome the hurdles that often stall grassroots initiatives, according to the Mirror. ‌ Stephen Harris, VP Energy Markets and Optimisation, stated: "Community energy has a critical role to play in the net zero transition – not just in generating clean power, but also in ensuring that communities benefit from the investment made into decarbonisation. We are thrilled to be launching our community energy toolkit, alongside our MP Kerry McCarthy, to help more people access the benefits of local, renewable power." In their toolkit, OVO declared: "At OVO, we believe community energy has a critical role to play in the net zero transition. Through our work setting up Power Purchase Agreements with community energy projects across the UK, we've seen first-hand the determination and ambition these groups bring to delivering local, renewable energy. ‌ "But it's also clear that the system isn't always set up to let this ambition thrive – with regulatory, financial and structural barriers too often standing in the way." They added: "Across the UK, communities are already leading the charge. But getting a project off the ground isn't always easy. "That's why we've created People Powered: How Communities Can Fund and Sell Their Own Power – a practical guide to help community groups navigate the complex world of finance and Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)." As stated on their website, OVO is dedicated to becoming a net-zero carbon business by 2035. This commitment is detailed in their Plan Zero strategy, which aims to lessen their dependence on offsets and assist UK households in reducing their bill costs.

Woman who had mobile phone stolen issues important security advice to others

Grania Nesbitt recalled the distressing situation in which her phone was stolen giving a thief access to her bank details and photos of her children, and now she's explained how some of her stress could have been avoided A woman who suffered the misfortune of having her mobile phone stolen has issued advice to others, admitting there are a number of security measures she wished she had been aware of prior to the incident unfolding last week. Grania Nesbitt recalled the mobile phone theft on TikTok, where she explained in a video what people can do to "make your life easier" should it happen to them too. ‌ "I want to share what I have learned because I didn't know a few of these points and if I had it would have made my life a lot easier," she began. ‌ According to Grania, there are a number of things you should "do today" in case your mobile phone is ever lost or stolen - beginning with backing everything up and two-factor authentication is employed. ‌ WARNING – explicit language in TikTok video below, viewer discretion advised Grania continued: "Make sure you know your passwords for everything and you have the FindMy app switched on and you know the login details for your iCloud account." ‌ She continued, pointing out that once you realise your phone is missing, the first thing you should do is try and log into the FindMy app as quickly as possible. "If you're with someone you trust, use their phone to do it," Grania advised, speaking from experience. Unfortunately for her, however, the phone's location hadn't updated meaning she could only see where it was a few hours prior. "The thief had turned my phone off," Grania continued. "So if you don't get there quick enough, you can't set it into 'lost mode', which gives you so much more protection." ‌ Grania added that although most phones require a pin to unlock them, a shop would be more willing to unknowingly assist thieves if there is no sign of the device being in lost mode. "When it's in lost mode they can tell it's been stolen," she said, Because she was too late, Grania was left cursing the fact that she runs two businesses via her phone, which only added to her stress. "I'm a solo mum of two girls trying to run my businesses and that phone had everything I needed on it - all my clients' contacts, access to my website, emails, WhatsApp and TikTok - I literally couldn't do anything," she explained. ‌ The second important thing to be aware of, which Grania confessed she wasn't, also concerns the FindMy app. "When you log in, there are two options," she explained. "There's 'erase' and 'remove' and I think remove is at the top so you'd think as it's in that order, you would click that first." However, as Grania discovered to her peril, this only complicated matters. "What I didn't realise is when you click remove, it takes off your activation lock so it removes iCloud, but it also takes off the lock and therefore if you aren't in lost mode, which gave them complete access to my phone," she detailed further. ‌ Now unable to select the erase option, Grania said she raced to her nearest Three [her network provider] store who provided her with a new sim card. "To erase, you need a code sent to your phone, which I didn't have," she explained. "I had a three-hour period where I couldn't so anything - and that is tehe scariest thing when your phone contains pictures of your kids and all of your bank details." However, the replacement sim card enabled her to receive a code and therefore erase everything. By this point, a new location of the phone was showing a particular address, which she has since reported to the police - though it later moved to a mobile phone shop, prompting Grania to believe it will be sold for parts. Closing, she advised others to seek insurance of their device - something she had failed to do. "I learned the hardest way by not having it," she said. Writing in response, one TikTok user provided an additional tip, stating: "Turn off the ability to access the pull down menu when your phone is unlocked. This might also help in some cases as it can't have data turned off or be put into airplane mode." To which a grateful Grania replied: "Thank you for this! I didn't know this either."

Pakistan's crackdown on black market dollar trade pushes deals online

KARACHI/PESHAWAR, Pakistan, July 29 (Reuters) - Pakistan's crackdown on black market dollar trading has strengthened the rupee, but traders say under-the-counter deals have swiftly shifted to smartphones and home deliveries instead. Many unlicensed exchange shops have been shut since July 22, when the military spy agency summoned representatives of the sector to explain the U.S. dollar's rising cost in the open market. Soon after, raids were carried out by the Federal Investigation Agency, which tackles financial crime and smuggling. Since the crackdown began, the rupee has rebounded from a sharp fall against the dollar earlier in July. In the open market, it firmed from 288.6 per dollar on July 19 to about 286 in recent sessions. But traders and bankers say the trade continues, suggesting the crackdown's effects could be short-lived. The black market operates outside official channels and includes unlicensed dealers, personal networks, and digital peer-to-peer exchanges, with customers seeking to skip tax declarations, avoid burdensome paperwork and bypass limits on official currency purchases. In Peshawar, a city near the Afghan border long known for black market currency deals, many shops in the historic Chowk Yadgar district remain shuttered, though some traders were still operating discreetly in back-alley booths. "The trade didn't stop. It just moved," said Ahmad, a dealer whose family has been in the business for generations. "Now it's on WhatsApp. If you know someone, the dollars come to your house." "The big players have shifted to safer locations and kept going," said another trader, Gul. Both traders asked not to give their full names. Even retail buyers are bypassing the formal foreign exchange market. Hassan, a manager at a multinational firm in Karachi, said stricter documentation drove him to an informal forex chat. "Everyone there is a buyer or seller. No middleman, no commission. Sometimes it's physical cash, sometimes bank transfers, sometimes crypto," he said. On Monday, Pakistan's central bank called in bank treasury heads to address pressure on the rupee. Two bankers said they were told to stop buying dollars from exchange companies at above-official rates on the grounds it was skewing the market. Banks were asked to rely on their own inflows from exports and remittances, but both sources have slowed. Exporters are delaying bringing money home, betting the rupee will weaken. Remittances are also tapering off as banks reduce incentives once offered to attract overseas inflows. Authorities also pressed banks to keep the gap between the interbank rate and the open market rate narrow, a condition of Pakistan's $7 billion IMF deal meant to discourage speculation. "These meetings have been happening for years, but this one was more pointed," one banker said, speaking on condition of anonymity. The central bank is expected to cut rates on Wednesday, easing inflation but risking pressure on the rupee.
