Transfers & new starters highlight Texas Longhorn 2025 breakout candidates
Texas had 12 players find their way to the next level this offseason, including Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron and the top 3 pass catchers from a year ago. Sarkisian and company were not as active in the portal and many thought, which means they are going to need some new names to break through for a huge season this year.
Here are my picks for breakout candidates for the Horns in 2025:
Kobe Black, SO CB
Kobe Black is a name that has been brought up a lot throughout the offseason, mainly because of Jahdae Barron walking out the door. He is going to be filling some big shoes, but I think will rise to the challenge and be a difference maker for Pete Kwiatkowski and this defense. Physically, he is one of the more impressive DBs Texas has, but with only 13 tackles last year, he will have to make a huge jump in 2025. Likely to be set up at field CB, he will be put on an island frequently. Of all the players on this list, he might be the most needed breakout player.
Parker Livingstone, RS FR WR
Another popular name around the 40 acres this spring was Parker Livingstone. Going into his RS FR year, he is going to be called on to make some big plays for the Horns this year. Sarkisian did bring in Emmett Mosley from Stanford to spread the wealth, but I think Livingstone will be hard to keep off the field. It sounds like him and Arch Manning have a great rapport and I expect Livingstone to be a household name this fall.
Maraad Watson, SO DT
If you watched the Syracuse Orange last year, you heard this name called a lot. Freshman All-American from a year ago and now has found his way to Austin. 30 tackles and 1 sack in 2024 and although Texas brought in a number of DT transfers, this guy will be a huge part of the rotation. He will likely not be asked to be on the field as much as he was last year, which can be a huge boost for DTs, as we've seen with a guy like Alfred Collins last year. Watson is going to be a factor in the program for the next two years at least, but I think 2025 will be plenty productive for the Syracuse transfer.
Colton Vasek, RS SO JACK
This seems to be the forgotten name in the Texas edge rusher room. Colin Simmons rightfully getting tons of national love. Trey Moore and Ethan Burke being two others that are talked about plenty, but Colton Vasek is someone that is sitting quietly right behind ready to perform. Vasek only played in 5 games last year, but was able to get a pair of sacks. He is a very talented player and with all eyes on Colin Simmons or Trey Moore, Colton Vasek could be in line for a nice 2025 campaign.
Brad Spence, JR MLB
The second transfer on this list comes by way of Arkansas, and he is yet another pass rush piece for Texas. Incredible athlete, sideline to sideline speed and really stout at the point of attack. Spence, like Vasek, will benefit greatly because of who is next to him. Anthony Hill Jr. is one of, if not the best LB in the country and will be getting a lot of the attention. That allows a guy like Brad Spence to roam a bit more and particularly be effective in 3rd down, pass rush situations.
There are plenty of other names, including the incoming freshman WR duo of Kaliq Lockett and Jamie Ffrench. Texas will need some of these guys that are unknown outside Austin to become big time players and household names this year. Those five guys will be a huge part of that equation.

Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting
The post Mavericks' Klay Thompson leaves NBA fans speechless with insane 3-point shooting appeared first on ClutchPoints. In a new video on social media, Dallas Mavericks veteran Klay Thompson reminded everyone why he's still one of the game's most lethal three-point shooters. He's fifth on the NBA's all-time list for three-pointers made. There's a reason why LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson wants to train with Thompson this summer. His shooting inspired a generation of hoopers. Much like the all-time three-point shooting leader and Thompson's former teammate, Golden State Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry, it's impressive to watch them train in an open gym. In a new video, Thompson couldn't miss, draining dozens of deep corner threes, per NBA skills coach Chris Brickley's X, formerly Twitter. 'I guess this is what being one of the best shooters ever to live looks like,' Brickley said to a video, nearly two minutes long, of Thompson draining threes. The art of Thompson's shooting is a friendly reminder of what NBA players do to train for games and those huge moments when their team needs a three, and the pressure's on. 'Klay Thompson is back to himself,' Hoops' X, formerly Twitter, said in response to the clip. '70 threes in a row,' to which other users pointed to Thompson's new relationship with rapper Megan Thee Stallion. 'Bro bags Meg and all of a sudden starts showing out again. Study the baddie effect,' said. Another user replied, 'Megan really changed this broke dudes life.' For the second consecutive season, Thompson shot below a 40% clip from deep, connecting on 39.1% of his threes in 2024-25. He also averaged 14.0 points on 41.2% shooting from the floor, 3.4 rebounds, and 0.7 steals per game in his first season with the Mavericks. Flau'jae Johnson reveals message from Mavericks' Klay Thompson When LSU women's basketball guard Flau'jae Johnson revealed Mavericks' Klay Thompson's message to her, she couldn't help but show excitement over the idea of working out with one of the greatest NBA three-point shooters. Johnson said Thompson has always impressed her with his approach to the game and can't wait to pick his brain and study his approach. 'I text Klay Thompson because I've always been impressed with his balance and his footwork,' Johnson said. 'I would really to come and just want you work. I was like I wanna watch you work. Klay Thompson hit me, and he was like, 'When I get back to Dallas, we can definitely get some shots up.' So I kind of have been reaching out.' Johnson is entering her senior year while Thompson will be entering his 13th NBA season, and second with the Mavericks. Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners' 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs. Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday. 'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.' Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner. 'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said. Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened. 'I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all,' Thornton said. 'It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow.' Mariners manager Dan Wilson said he thought Thornton pitched 'fabulous' before the injury. 'We'll find out more tonight,' Wilson said. 'Hoping for the best.' ___ AP MLB:
