Countdown to Kickoff: Wisner's Second Act

How will Tre Wisner follow up a 1,000 yard season with CJ Baxter making a comeback? Will Texas have a true two-headed monster or will Wisner still be the bellcow of the offense? It's hard to believe that this time last year, Quintrevion Wisner was sitting third on the depth chart for the Horns. Now, he walks into this year as the only returning 1,000 yard rusher in the SEC. He comes into this season as the RB1 on this team, but CJ Baxter is back from injury and plans to factor in plenty to the run game. How does that impact Wisner's role and how will he improve going into year two? 2024 Stats: 226 carries, 1,064 yards, 5 TDs; 311 receiving yards, 1 TD Wisner was one of the biggest reasons Texas was able to find their way to the CFP Semifinals last year. A team coming into the season wondering if they were going to be able to run the ball at all found their workhorse quickly. He went over 100 yards in the Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Clemson in 2024 and kept the Texas run game moving largely. Heading into 2025, you will find him on a number of major award watchlists, including the Maxwell and Doak Walker. He is no longer the unknown 3-star. He is the leader of that room and a leader of this team as a whole. The biggest shift coming this year is the highly anticipated return of CJ Baxter. Baxter has been a huge topic of conversation this offseason after a remarkable freshman year in 2023 before the season-ending injury in 2024 fall camp. Baxter seems to be healthy heading into camp, but there will still be some easing back in once the season starts. That leaves Wisner in an interesting spot heading into this year. His role in the offense could change drastically throughout the year. Sarkisian and company feel very confident in Baxter's ability to get back fast, but it will be Wisner leading the way to start the season. Then, the introduction of Baxter will be a continuing narrative throughout the first month of the season. The great news for Texas is Wisner is one of the culture catalysts for this team, and he will handle this incredibly, in my opinion. Tre Wisner's physical ability is undeniable. His effort and heart is what separates him from most people and why he took over the RB1 job last year. He's going to give you great football, and maybe more importantly, he and CJ Baxter's relationship will be solid as ever. When I look at Wisner in 2025, I see a guy that will likely take a step back on the stat sheet to a degree, but it'll be because the run game doesn't always fall solely on his shoulders. Speaking of the guy that will take some of that weight away, tomorrow we are going to jump into CJ Baxter and his return to the field after a torn ACL a year ago. One of the biggest stories of 2025 for the Horns, and we will get into it next time on the countdown to kickoff.

Transfers & new starters highlight Texas Longhorn 2025 breakout candidates

Parker Livingstone, Kobe Black looking for breakout seasons with Matthew Golden and Jahdae Barron moving on. Transfers Maraad Watson and Brad Spence are set for huge years next to other elite players. Texas had 12 players find their way to the next level this offseason, including Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron and the top 3 pass catchers from a year ago. Sarkisian and company were not as active in the portal and many thought, which means they are going to need some new names to break through for a huge season this year. Here are my picks for breakout candidates for the Horns in 2025: Kobe Black, SO CB Kobe Black is a name that has been brought up a lot throughout the offseason, mainly because of Jahdae Barron walking out the door. He is going to be filling some big shoes, but I think will rise to the challenge and be a difference maker for Pete Kwiatkowski and this defense. Physically, he is one of the more impressive DBs Texas has, but with only 13 tackles last year, he will have to make a huge jump in 2025. Likely to be set up at field CB, he will be put on an island frequently. Of all the players on this list, he might be the most needed breakout player. Parker Livingstone, RS FR WR Another popular name around the 40 acres this spring was Parker Livingstone. Going into his RS FR year, he is going to be called on to make some big plays for the Horns this year. Sarkisian did bring in Emmett Mosley from Stanford to spread the wealth, but I think Livingstone will be hard to keep off the field. It sounds like him and Arch Manning have a great rapport and I expect Livingstone to be a household name this fall. Maraad Watson, SO DT If you watched the Syracuse Orange last year, you heard this name called a lot. Freshman All-American from a year ago and now has found his way to Austin. 30 tackles and 1 sack in 2024 and although Texas brought in a number of DT transfers, this guy will be a huge part of the rotation. He will likely not be asked to be on the field as much as he was last year, which can be a huge boost for DTs, as we've seen with a guy like Alfred Collins last year. Watson is going to be a factor in the program for the next two years at least, but I think 2025 will be plenty productive for the Syracuse transfer. Colton Vasek, RS SO JACK This seems to be the forgotten name in the Texas edge rusher room. Colin Simmons rightfully getting tons of national love. Trey Moore and Ethan Burke being two others that are talked about plenty, but Colton Vasek is someone that is sitting quietly right behind ready to perform. Vasek only played in 5 games last year, but was able to get a pair of sacks. He is a very talented player and with all eyes on Colin Simmons or Trey Moore, Colton Vasek could be in line for a nice 2025 campaign. Brad Spence, JR MLB The second transfer on this list comes by way of Arkansas, and he is yet another pass rush piece for Texas. Incredible athlete, sideline to sideline speed and really stout at the point of attack. Spence, like Vasek, will benefit greatly because of who is next to him. Anthony Hill Jr. is one of, if not the best LB in the country and will be getting a lot of the attention. That allows a guy like Brad Spence to roam a bit more and particularly be effective in 3rd down, pass rush situations. There are plenty of other names, including the incoming freshman WR duo of Kaliq Lockett and Jamie Ffrench. Texas will need some of these guys that are unknown outside Austin to become big time players and household names this year. Those five guys will be a huge part of that equation.

After huge Sunday night commitment, Texas rises to No. 4 in team recruiting rankings

The Texas Longhorns had a great weekend. Not only did former Longhorn Scottie Scheffler win the British Open, but UT got a massive five-star commitment. Derrek Cooper, the No. 2 running back in the 2026 class, committed to Texas on Sunday evening. The pledge has skyrocketed the Horns up the recruiting rankings to No. 4 overall. Cooper is now the fourth highest ranked commitment in Texas's 2026 class, behind quarterback Dia Bell, linebacker Tyler Atkinson, and EDGE Richard Wesley. Things looked kind of dark for Texas recruiting in early July. The high-profile commitment of five-star offensive tackle Felix Ojo to Texas Tech stung. The Horns lost nine recruiting battles in a row after Wesley committed in late June. But things turned around 10 days ago with the commitment of four-star CB Samari Matthews. Texas beat out South Carolina, Miami and Florida State. Four days later, Atkinson committed to UT over Georgia, Clemson, and Oregon. A day later, Steve Sarkisian was able to flip five-star Georgia commit James Johnson. The flurry of commitments has lifted Texas to No. 6 in the team recruiting rankings. Cooper has given the overall class another boost to No. 4. UT also has the second most five-star commits of anyone in the nation. Sark has pledges from the No. 1 QB, No. 1 linebacker, No. 1 defensive lineman, No. 2 running back and No. 3 edge rusher. Any worries over the quality of this recruiting class has been put to rest. Many of the Texas 2026 class have also had a great summer. Bell, Arch Manning's probable heir apparent, was named the MVP of the exclusive Elite 11 QB event. His performance immediately was reflected in the rankings, as he was boosted to the No. 1 QB recruit in the country. Wesley was dominant at the Rivals Five-Star Challenge. The Longhorns had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2025. And while Sark and the recruiting team at Texas isn't done yet, the past 10 days have set UT on the path to another top five class and it may end up win another recruiting title before the cycle is done. Daniel Radcliffe's ‘disturbing' film with Sabrina Carpenter finally available on streaming

Harry Potter this is not. A decade after quietly slithering into cinemas, Horns – a genre-bending horror-fantasy starring Daniel Radcliffe and a teenage Sabrina Carpenter – is finally getting its due. The film is landing on Pluto TV for free streaming on July 21, giving horror fans and Radcliffe loyalists a chance to revisit one of his strangest, darkest roles. Based on Joe Hill's bestselling 2010 novel (yes, Stephen King's son), Horns follows Ig Perrish (Radcliffe), a young man whose life implodes after his girlfriend Merrin (played by Ted Lasso star Juno Temple) is brutally murdered. Everyone thinks he did it, but Ig's reality becomes even stranger when he wakes up with horns sprouting from his forehead, granting him the sinister ability to compel people to reveal their darkest secrets. Using this terrifying power, Ig sets out to find the real killer while grappling with the town's suspicion and his own grief. Directed by Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes, Crawl), Horns is a twisted blend of supernatural horror, dark comedy, and psychological thriller, unafraid to push boundaries and lean into its bizarre premise. It explores guilt, vengeance, love, and transformation with a darkly humorous edge, making it stand out in a landscape often dominated by formulaic horror. Sabrina Carpenter, who was just 15 during filming, plays the young Merrin in flashbacks, years before she would top charts and sell out stadium tours. The cast also includes The Handmaid's Tale's Max Minghella as Lee Tourneau, Ig's childhood friend whose secrets add further layers to the film's mystery. At its 2014 release, Horns received a mixed reception, with critics unsure how to handle its shifts in tone and genre. But over the years, the film has gained a cult following for its originality, gothic visuals, and Radcliffe's fearless performance as a man teetering between heartbreak and hellish fury. Fans on IMDb have praised the film's unusual concept, calling it 'an underdog movie that combines horror, fantasy, drama and psychological suspense.' On X, one viewer wrote, 'So many regrets not watching Horns earlier. Daniel Radcliffe you twisted mother!!' i just found out this was daniel radcliffe with sabrina carpenter😭 — jude⸆⸉ (@karmaissebby) May 11, 2024 Radcliffe's post-Potter career has often veered into the eccentric, from Swiss Army Man to Guns Akimbo, but Horns remains one of his boldest swings, showcasing his commitment to playing characters who are both tormented and darkly funny. The film also captures Carpenter at the start of her career, years before her current pop star superstardom, adding another layer of intrigue for her fans. In an era of safe remakes and jump-scare-heavy horror, Horns offers something different: a story about grief and rage dressed in supernatural horror, wrapped with dark humour and led by a committed Radcliffe who grows literal horns as his world collapses around him. Whether you're in the mood for a cult horror you missed, a dose of dark fantasy, or a reminder of Radcliffe's willingness to take risks, Horns delivers. It is a film that leaves an impression – sometimes shocking, sometimes emotional, always strange. With its arrival on Pluto TV, Horns is ready to haunt a new generation, proving that even a decade later, its twisted tale of love, loss, and the monstrous truths we hide is worth the watch.
