Texas baseball's season ends with a thud, No. 2 national seed bounced by UTSA

Texas baseball's season ends with a thud, No. 2 national seed bounced by UTSA After losing to UTSA in a close 9-7 heartbreaker Saturday night, the Longhorns baseball team journey through the losers bracket started well on Sunday. But the night ended in disaster, which in turn ended Texas' season. UTSA dominated Texas Sunday night 7-4. Texas dominated Kansas State in the afternoon elimination game of the Austin Regional. The Horns got off to a great start thanks to a Casey Borba grand slam in the first inning. Texas jumped out to a big lead and held on for a 15-8 win. But one reason winning a regional from the losers bracket is the strain the extra games put on your pitching staff. Texas used a total of nine pitchers in three games to get to the regional final in high stress situations. And as we found out Saturday, the Roadrunners can hit. Norris McClure's first inning two-run home run was a harbinger of things to come. UTSA hung five runs on reliever Ethan Walker in the third inning and that was about all of the runs UTSA would need. The Roadrunners were up 7-0 and weren't really threatened again. UT got a run an a Borba double in the 4th and a run from a Kimble Schuessler homer in the eighth. The Horns got a glimmer of hope in the ninth inning when a Max Belyeu two-run homer cut the lead to three. But Schuessler struck out swinging to end the game. Texas was the hottest team in the nation in the middle part of the regular season schedule and soared to the No. 1 ranking. But despite winning the SEC regular season title, the Horns struggled down the stretch, finishing 4-7 with a one-and-done SEC tournament. The Longhorns ouster means the top two national seeds in the NCAA postseason tournament our out. No. 1 seed Vanderbilt was bounced Sunday by Wright State. Florida baseball's first-year right-hander earns third SEC Freshman of the Week award

Florida baseball's first-year right-hander earns third SEC Freshman of the Week award Florida baseball's first-year right-handed starting pitcher Aidan King was named the SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon. It is the third such honor for the young hurler out of Jacksonville, Florida. King earned a decisive victory over the then-top-ranked Texas Longhorns on Sunday afternoon thanks to seven shutout, two-hit innings. From the opening pitch to his final salvo the true freshman dominated, striking out a career-high nine batters against just a trio of walks, while setting personal bests in innings and pitches (110). The victory helped clinch the Gators' penultimate series of the 2025 regular-season campaign and gave the 'Horns their first home series defeat this spring. With just one series left on the regular-season schedule, King has amassed a 5-2 record thanks to a 2.90 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 64-to-19 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 59 innings pitched. The young gun has been peaking at the right time too, allowing just a single earned run in 14 1/3 innings over his last three starts, giving the Gator a 0.63 ERA through that stretch. Texas will spend $35-40 million on its 2025 football roster

Horns down payment. Via Kirk Bohls of the Houston Chronicle, the University of Texas will pay $35 million to $40 million for its 2025 football roster. The number includes what likely will be $20.5 million in revenue sharing plus NIL payments from the Texas One Fund. The spike in money for the players apparently will be a one-time thing, since many schools will be phasing out their NIL collectives in lieu of revenue sharing until the pending antitrust settlement. Texas won't disclose how many players will make at least $1 million. Quarterback Arch Manning will be the highest paid Longhorn 'by far.' All of his money comes from NIL deals done separate and apart from the school. Manning will be starting for the first time in 2025. Despite the fact that he's the betting favorite to be the first overall pick in the 2026 draft, he could still choose to come back for 2026. While $45 million seems like a lot, remember this. The NFL's initial per-team salary cap, way back in 1994, was $34.6 million. This year, it's $279.2 million. Thus, even though college football players finally will be getting paid, it's still a lot less money than what is and will continue to be available to NFL players.
