Countdown to Kickoff: Wisner's Second Act

Countdown to Kickoff: Wisner's Second Act

USA Today30-07-2025
How will Tre Wisner follow up a 1,000 yard season with CJ Baxter making a comeback? Will Texas have a true two-headed monster or will Wisner still be the bellcow of the offense?
It's hard to believe that this time last year, Quintrevion Wisner was sitting third on the depth chart for the Horns. Now, he walks into this year as the only returning 1,000 yard rusher in the SEC. He comes into this season as the RB1 on this team, but CJ Baxter is back from injury and plans to factor in plenty to the run game. How does that impact Wisner's role and how will he improve going into year two?
2024 Stats: 226 carries, 1,064 yards, 5 TDs; 311 receiving yards, 1 TD
Wisner was one of the biggest reasons Texas was able to find their way to the CFP Semifinals last year. A team coming into the season wondering if they were going to be able to run the ball at all found their workhorse quickly. He went over 100 yards in the Oklahoma, Kentucky, Texas A&M and Clemson in 2024 and kept the Texas run game moving largely.
Heading into 2025, you will find him on a number of major award watchlists, including the Maxwell and Doak Walker. He is no longer the unknown 3-star. He is the leader of that room and a leader of this team as a whole. The biggest shift coming this year is the highly anticipated return of CJ Baxter.
Baxter has been a huge topic of conversation this offseason after a remarkable freshman year in 2023 before the season-ending injury in 2024 fall camp. Baxter seems to be healthy heading into camp, but there will still be some easing back in once the season starts. That leaves Wisner in an interesting spot heading into this year. His role in the offense could change drastically throughout the year.
Sarkisian and company feel very confident in Baxter's ability to get back fast, but it will be Wisner leading the way to start the season. Then, the introduction of Baxter will be a continuing narrative throughout the first month of the season. The great news for Texas is Wisner is one of the culture catalysts for this team, and he will handle this incredibly, in my opinion.
Tre Wisner's physical ability is undeniable. His effort and heart is what separates him from most people and why he took over the RB1 job last year. He's going to give you great football, and maybe more importantly, he and CJ Baxter's relationship will be solid as ever.
When I look at Wisner in 2025, I see a guy that will likely take a step back on the stat sheet to a degree, but it'll be because the run game doesn't always fall solely on his shoulders. Speaking of the guy that will take some of that weight away, tomorrow we are going to jump into CJ Baxter and his return to the field after a torn ACL a year ago. One of the biggest stories of 2025 for the Horns, and we will get into it next time on the countdown to kickoff.

Bednar's first save as Yankee secures 3-2 win over Rangers, snaps five-game skid

ARLINGTON, Texas – David Bednar got his first save for the New York Yankees after going a little longer than expected, and ended their five-game losing streak before going home. Bednar got the final five outs, all on strikeouts, in their 3-2 win at Texas on Wednesday. The game-ending one came with two runners on base after manager Aaron Boone had gone to the mound to pull the right-hander that New York acquired from Pittsburgh at the trade deadline last Thursday. "I said, 'I'm going to take you here.' And he gave me a look like, no you're not," Boone said. "He absolutely wanted the ball and, you know, felt like his stuff was still there. ... What a great, gutsy effort." Bednar's 18th save overall this season came in his third appearance for the Yankees (61-54), who remained ahead of Texas for the American League's third and final wild-card spot. They have a day off before opening a three-game series against AL West-leading Houston at home on Friday night after Bednar's first two series with New York were on the road. Bednar had two strikeouts to end the eighth and two more to open the ninth before Corey Seager walked on six pitches and Marcus Semien grounded a 3-1 pitch through the right side of the infield for a single. Bednar, already at a season-high 36 pitches and with cleanup hitter Adolis García headed to the plate, initially didn't see his new manager walking toward him. "I was just kind of getting my mind right to face García," Bednar said. "I told (Boone) I wanted him and, you know, he agreed. And I just wanted to bear down and get that last one." Bednar struck out García, finishing with a season-high 42 pitches for his most since 43 in an eight-out save for the Pirates at St. Louis on June 15, 2022. It was the third time this season Bednar recorded five outs, and the second in his week with the Yankees. "That was awesome, especially that last one," said Paul Goldschmidt, whose pinch-hit solo homer in the seventh broke a 2-2 tie. "To go out out there and make those pitches was huge." ___ AP MLB:

Dabo Swinney reveals Clemson running back Jarvis Green will miss most of the 2025 season

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney provided several health updates following Wednesday evening's practice at Jervey Meadows, including unfortunate news regarding redshirt sophomore running back Jarvis Green. Green is expected to miss most of the 2025 season after undergoing foot surgery. Swinney said it's the most serious injury the team has dealt with so far in fall camp. 'He's going to probably be out most of the year,' Swinney said. 'We had to do surgery on his foot, so he'll have a chance to come back at the end of the season. I hate that for him. I really do.' After redshirting in 2023, Green appeared in nine games last season, battling through multiple injuries. He finished the year with 53 rushing yards on nine carries and caught two passes out of the backfield. One of those receptions was a 25-yard touchdown in Clemson's College Football Playoff loss to Texas—a career first and a highlight moment on a big stage. Swinney said they may explore the possibility of a medical redshirt for Green, though nothing has been finalized. 'We'll just have to see how it all goes,' Swinney noted. In total, Green has played in 11 games over his Clemson career, logging 57 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards on 37 offensive snaps. Swinney also shared updates on several other Tigers. Defensive lineman Peter Woods missed Wednesday's practice due to illness, while safety Khalil Barnes is dealing with what Swinney called a 'short-term' injury and was spotted in a yellow jersey. Running back Jay Haynes continues progressing in his recovery from an ACL tear and is 'one step closer' to being cleared for practice. Meanwhile, cornerback Jeadyn Lukus is expected to return to practice sometime next week. Texas A&M's tough 2025-2026 SEC basketball schedule has been revealed

Texas A&M's 2025-2026 basketball season will be the first for new head coach Bucky McMillan, who is just one player away from entering his inaugural campaign with a 15-player roster that is talented enough to compete for an NCAA Tournament bid. This summer, the new roster has been hard at work, getting acclimated to the speed and intensity of McMillan's system. After five seasons leading the Samford Bulldogs, McMillan is entering the toughest conference in college basketball, as the SEC has dominated the landscape in both recruiting and NCAA Tournament success. His new roster has enough star power, including former Texas Tech/Creighton guard Pop Issacs and Indiana transfer forward Mackenzie Mgbako, who are expected to lead the Aggies in several categories. On Wednesday, Texas A&M's SEC schedule was released, and, similar to last season, the Aggies will be challenged from start to finish. Thanks to TexAgs for the graphic, the Aggies will kick off the 2026 SEC season against LSU at home, before facing Auburn on the road, Oklahoma at home, and then two consecutive road games against Tennessee and Texas. Outside of LSU, who should be improved, but not considered one of the top teams, Auburn, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas could all be ranked in the Top 25 at this time. Texas A&M will also face Alabama, Georgia, Arkansas, and Vanderbilt on the road, which is quite the gauntlet for any first-year head coach. However, the Aggies are expected to be one of the top-scoring teams in the conference, so defense and rebounding are the fundamental questions that will be answered once the season begins.
