It: Welcome to Derry has its terrifying first trailer.
HBO Max's prequel series, set in the universe of It (2017) and It Chapter Two (2019), debuts fall 2025. It takes place 27 years before the events of 2017's It, and follows a group of children who uncover a murderous entity that takes the form of killer shapeshifting clown, Pennywise.
"This is a book we love a lot, and we felt that there was still a lot of story to be covered," Andy Muschietti and his sister and producing partner Barbara Muschietti tell Entertainment Weekly.

It: Welcome to Derry Release Date
It: Welcome to Derry releases fall 2025 on HBO Max. There are nine episodes, set to drop weekly on HBO Max. There is currently no It: Welcome to Derry first episode date.
It: Welcome to Derry Plot
"Get ready to go back to where IT all began..." reads HBO's tagline, suggesting It: Welcome to Derry presents the morbid origin story of Pennywise. Set in the 1960s, the plot centres on a group of young people exploring the mystery of an evil force that has been terrorising the town of Derry for centuries.
As Muschietti tells Entertainment Weekly, "Specifically, we are telling the stories of the interludes, writings by Mike Hanlon based on his investigation that includes interviews he conducts with the older people in the town. In Welcome to Derry, we touch on the usual themes that were talked about in the movie — friendship, loss, the power of unified belief — but this story focuses also on the use of fear as a weapon, which is one of the things that is also relevant to our times."
The official logline for the film is as follows: "Set in the world of Stephen King's "IT" universe, IT: WELCOME TO DERRY is based on King's "IT" novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films "IT" and "IT Chapter Two."

Man Watches Eminem Film at Movies, Has Instant Regret Over New Hairstyle
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. A movie trip to see Eminem's latest documentary turned into an unexpected viral moment for one man on TikTok. The clip posted on August 8 has racked up over 206,000 views. In it, Rekai, 27 (@rekaisaidso), stares into the camera with wide eyes after sitting down in the theater to watch Stans. His hair was short and dyed peroxide blonde—the rapper's signature look during the late 90s and early 2000s. "I shouldn't have dyed my hair blond beforehand," the video's caption read. Stans, coproduced by Eminem, explores the lives of some of his most-devoted fans and takes its name from the rapper's 2000 hit "Stan," about an obsessive admirer. The film screened globally in select theaters on August 7 for one weekend only. Newsweek spoke to Rekai, a visual-effects artist from London, in the U.K., who said: "I listen to Eminem's music casually, but I'm not a Stan by any means." What Is a Stan? Kevin Winter / Staff/Hulton Archive A 2024 YouGov survey found Eminem to be the most popular among his peers, with a 54 percent positive rating—placing him ahead of Pharrell Williams (47 percent) and Ludacris (46 percent). Eminem is particularly favored by Gen Z adults and millennials, with 68 percent from each group viewing him positively. Two in five fans come from lower- (41 percent) or middle-income households (39 percent), and 40 percent are married without children. However, there is a difference between enjoying an artist's music and embracing every aspect of their persona—a distinction captured in his 2000 song "Stan." In the dictionary, "Stan" describes someone who admires a celebrity to an unusual degree. Forbes traced the term back to Eminem's collaboration with Dido, a track that cemented the image of the devoted superfan in pop culture. CLARY / Contributor/AFP Rekai said that he has had blonde hair on and off for around 10 years, but, this time, the timing couldn't have been worse. In the late 90s and early 2000s, the Real Slim Shady's peroxide hair, white T-shirt, and baggy jeans became an iconic look—so much so that fans often copied it at his concerts. Eminem has even filled his sets with look-alikes, from the MTV VMAs in the 2000s to the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. TikTok Reacts The clip has already racked up more than 26,000 likes and nearly 100 comments, many filled with sarcasm and jokes. "Did anyone think you was him?" asked one user, and Rekai joked: "Yeah so many people came and asked me for autographs." "Nothing can beat 8 mile," noted another user, referring to Eminem's musical drama released in 2002.

3 best thriller movies on HBO Max to stream right now
No cheap thrills here — the slow-burning suspense, the high-stakes conflicts, the edge-of-your-seat excitement and the plot twists that constantly keep you guessing richly add to this trio of top-rate thrillers, all of which are available to stream now on HBO Max. HBO's streaming service is loaded with tension-filled mysteries, pulpy crime thrillers and intense psychological dramas, including some of the most critically acclaimed thrillers in movie history, which makes it that much more difficult to choose exactly which one to click "Play" on next. So we've made things easier by narrowing that cinematic pool down to three great choices, from a history-making south Korean stunner, to a culture-shaking detective classic, to what is arguably the most exciting movie of 2025 so far. Here are three thrillers on HBO Max to add to your watch list ASAP. The first non-English-language film to ever claim the Academy Award for Best Picture, Bong Joon Ho's 2019 black comedy "Parasite" finds its chilling thrills in class disparity, as the financially destitute Kim family (played by Song Kang-ho, Jang Hye-jin, Choi Woo-shik and Park So-dam) slowly but surely infiltrates the household of the Kim family, who are the picture of aspirational wealth. Though there are plenty of outrageously funny moments throughout Bong's masterpiece, those satirical laughs are grippingly offset by a nerve-wracking sense of unease and hauntingly tragic elements that stick with you long after the credits roll. On Rotten Tomatoes, "Parasite" holds a near-perfect 99% approval rating, with critical consensus praising: "An urgent, brilliantly layered look at timely social themes, Parasite finds writer-director Bong Joon Ho in near-total command of his craft." Watch "Parasite" on HBO Max now Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. "The Silence of the Lambs" is the rare film to claim the Big Five at the Oscars: that would be Best Picture, Best Director (for Jonathan Demme), Best Adapted Screenplay (for Ted Tally's script), Best Actress (for Jodie Foster, as the distressed but determined F.B.I. cadet Clarice Sterling) and Best Actor (for Anthony Hopkins's instantly iconic performance as cannibalistic killer Hannibal Lecter). And it's easy to see why — Demme's film is a true classic of the thriller genre, pulsing with fear, suspense and vulnerability thanks to those fantastic performances (outside of career-defining turns by Foster and Hopkins, Ted Levine is also exceptionally terrifying as serial killer Buffalo Bill) as well as Tally's taunt screenwriting, which "teeters on the edge between psychological study and all-out horror," per Rotten Tomatoes, where the psychological thriller has a 95% approval rating. Watch "The Silence of the Lambs" on HBO Max now Filmmaker Ryan Coogler and star Michael B. Jordan are used to having films find equal parts commercial and critical success — these are the guys behind the "Black Panther" franchise and the "Creed" films, after all. But the frequent screen collaborators put out arguably their most surprising hit this year with "Sinners," a Southern horror thriller that slow-burned its way to a whopping $364 million worldwide on a reported $90 million budget. In the vampy 2025 title, Jordan has dual roles as criminal twin brothers Smoke and Stack Moore who return to their hometown in the hopes of leaving their troubled lives behind, only to find an even greater evil waiting to welcome them back. Written and directed by Coogler, the spine-tingling tale — which also stars Hailee Steinfeld, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku and Omar Benson Miller — was called "a rip-roaring fusion of masterful visual storytelling and toe-tapping music" that reveals the full scope of Coogler's "singular imagination," per Rotten Tomatoes, where the "Sinners" has a 97% approval rating. James Gunn Drops Major Hint at Margot Robbie Returning to DCU
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek's network of contributors James Gunn and Peter Safran are currently busy building the DCU, which will consist of live-action films, animated and live-action shows, and video games. Gunn has already released "Superman," which became a massive hit. More news: Paramount Confirms New 'TMNT' Live-Action Film is in Development "Superman" was not Gunn's first foray into the DCU, as he was tasked with rebooting "The Suicide Squad," which featured characters from the original DC film, "Suicide Squad," but were all mostly killed off in the first 10 minutes. One of the biggest holdovers from the previous DC Universe is Margot Robbie, who portrayed Harley Quinn. It is no secret that Robbie became an instant fan-favorite, and fans have been clamoring for her return in Gunn's new DCU. Gunn finally addressed the situation in a big way, hinting at Robbie potentially returning as Quinn. In a feature from Entertainment Weekly, Gunn divulged a small, yet not-so-subtle hint about Harley Quinn making a return. Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn and Bloodsport in action in "The Suicide Squad" Polka-Dot Man, Harley Quinn and Bloodsport in action in "The Suicide Squad" Warner Bros. Pictures & DC Comics More news: 'Nobody 2' Reviews Are Overwhelmingly One-Sided "That will be revealed down the line," Gunn tells Entertainment Weekly. Gunn did not state that Robbie won't return as Quinn, which is the general case for the filmmaker. Whenever a fan asks about a specific plot point or character, Gunn is no stranger to offering a direct answer. Gunn has shot down rumors plenty, but this time, he chose not to state outright that Robbie would not return. It would be believed that she could return as Quinn in some capacity. Gunn also revealed that he has been trying to find a way to bring back fellow fan-favorite, Idris Elba. Elba portrayed Bloodsport in "The Suicide Squad" and also became an instant hit. Bloodsport, being an assassin who has a change of heart and becomes a hero, while also having a deep rat phobia, was fantastic. "I definitely am always looking for a place to put Bloodsport and figuring that out," Gunn says of Idris Elba's ruthless mercenary from the 2021 sequel. "So we'll see what happens." Gunn is reportedly working on the sequel to "Superman," but there are also "Lanterns" and "Supergirl" coming down the pipeline. Both the series and film could feature more DCU characters, which would make a lot of sense. "Peacemaker" season 2 is also set for release later this month, and would be a place where Quinn or Bloodsport could make an appearance. For more movie news, head to Newsweek Movies.
