Malaysian duo burnt in Bangkok street attack get embassy aid, families en route
Consular officers have visited the injured Malaysians who are currently receiving medical treatment in separate hospitals to monitor their condition and ensure necessary support is provided.
The consular officials have also arranged for their immediate family members to travel there today.
'The Ministry has been informed that the Thai authorities are conducting a full investigation into the incident.
'Malaysia places its full trust in the Thai authorities to carry out a thorough and transparent
investigation, and will provide full cooperation as required,' the Foreign Affairs Ministry said in a press statement.
Yesterday, news agencies reported the shocking street attack by a Thai boxer who poured thinner on two Malaysians – a man and a women – while they were sitting on some steps at a shopping mall on Ratchadamri Road in the Thai capital on August 7.
The stunned Malaysians ran off, but were chased by the attacker who then set them on fire.
People in the area were reported to have rushed to the duo's aid and stopped the attacker who claimed he had lost his job and was randomly venting his frustrations on the Malaysians.
National news agency Bernama named the Malaysians as Ong, a 26-year-old man and Gan, a 27-year-old woman.
Ong was reported to have sustained serious but not life threatening second-degree burns across his upper body, both front and back, and is currently warded in the Intensive Care Unit at Police General Hospital.
Gan is receiving treatment at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital for 36 per cent, second degree burns.
She is reported to be conscious and her condition is stable.

KOTA BHARU, Aug 10 — Two men, the sons of a doctor, and their mother have been detained in connection with the seizure of 35 kilogrammes of compressed cannabis and a pistol in a raid at a house in Kampung But, Ketereh here yesterday. Kelantan Police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the stepbrothers, aged 24 and 34, who work as assistants at their father's clinic, and the 46-year-old housewife were picked up at 4.30am. 'Checks at the house found six boxes containing compressed blocks of dried plant material suspected to be cannabis and two bags containing the same drug weighing 35kg, worth about RM299,590. 'Also seized was a Glock pistol with 16 bullets and a casing, estimated to be worth RM5,000,' he told a press conference at the Kelantan Police Contingent headquarters here today. Mohd Yusoff said four vehicles — a BMW 523i, a Mercedes-Benz C200, a Perodua Bezza and a Naza Ria — worth a total of RM116,000 were also confiscated, bringing the total estimated value of the seizures to RM420,000. Mohd Yusoff said the syndicate is believed to have been active since 2023, using the house as storage before distributing the drugs via courier services. The quantity seized could supply about 35,000 addicts. 'The men tested positive for methamphetamine and ketamine while their mother tested negative,' he said, adding that all suspects have been remanded for seven days starting August 6 for investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In a separate case, Mohd Yusoff said the General Operations Force Battalion 7 seized a revolver, 30 live bullets and a casing from a Thai couple at a house in Pengkalan Kubor on July 25. The married couple, aged 40 and 30, did not possess a valid firearms licence and had entered Malaysia illegally. Penang cops book Kepala Batas hardware trader under three laws after upside-down Jalur Gemilang uproar
KEPALA BATAS, Aug 10 — Police detained the owner of a hardware store in Jalan Bertam Perdana here, following a flap over the Jalur Gemilang being flown upside down in front of his premises yesterday. Acting Penang police chief Datuk Mohd Alwi Zainal Abidin said the arrest of the 59-year-old man was made last night in the Kepala Batas area. 'The case is being investigated under Section 5 of the Emblems and Names (Prevention of Improper Use) Act 1963, Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1988. 'The investigation papers will be referred to the Penang deputy public prosecutor's office tomorrow with a proposed charge,' he said in a statement today. Mohd Alwi stated that so far, police have received 16 reports regarding the incident, 12 of which were lodged in the state, while the other four were reported outside the Penang contingent. He said the police view such acts seriously and reminded the public to respect the Jalur Gemilang as a symbol of national sovereignty. Penang supermarket baby-snatching suspect under police remand till Aug 13
BUTTERWORTH, Aug 10 — A Vietnamese man who allegedly tried to snatch an 11-month-old baby while fleeing after being caught stealing from a supermarket in Telaga Air yesterday has been remanded for four days. Seberang Perai Utara police chief ACP Anuar Abd Rahman said the 36-year-old security guard was remanded until Aug 13 to facilitate investigations under Section 380 of the Penal Code for theft, Section 324 for causing hurt, and Section 506 for criminal intimidation. 'The suspect tested negative for drugs, and he has no prior record,' Anuar told Bernama. A video of the incident has gone viral, showing the suspect holding a plastic bag and a knife, trying to pull the baby from a woman's arms. The incident happened at 12.45 pm when a supermarket supervisor caught the man trying to leave with some weighed seafood without paying. As the supervisor intervened, the suspect broke free and grabbed the baby while brandishing a knife.
