Mediacorp dismisses employee after ‘serious incident' in female toilet, police investigating
SINGAPORE, June 11 — A male employee at Singapore's national broadcaster Mediacorp has been dismissed following an incident involving suspicious behaviour in a female toilet at the company's premises.
The company confirmed to The Straits Times yesterday that the staff member was immediately terminated after what it described as a 'serious incident'.
The case has since been referred to the police, and the individual is currently in custody as investigations continue.
In a brief statement, a Mediacorp spokesman said, 'The safety and well-being of our employees is of paramount importance to us, and we remain committed to maintaining a safe and respectful workplace for all.'
The broadcaster, headquartered at Mediapolis in one-north, did not provide further details, citing ongoing investigations.
The Straits Times said it had contacted the police for more information.

Prosecutors said the man was captain of the Chinese-crewed Hong Tai 58, registered in Togo, which Taiwanese authorities detained after suspecting the ship had dropped anchor near an undersea cable off southwestern Taiwan, damaging it. The court in the southern Taiwanese city of Tainan said the ship's Chinese captain, whom they identified only by his family name, Wang, was guilty of damaging the cables, though added he had denied the crime and that he can appeal. Wang admitted that he told the crew to drop anchor, but denied that he was guilty of damaging the cables, and that he was merely negligent in his duties, the court said in a statement. The court found that the captain had allowed the cargo ship to 'wander', and that the cables broke due to the pulling of the anchor, it added. Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom suffered losses of more than T$17 million (US$576,564) in repair costs, the court said. China's Taiwan affairs office did not immediately respond to a request for comment and Reuters was not able to locate a contact for a representative of Wang. China has previously accused Taiwan of 'manipulating' possible Chinese involvement in the case, saying it was casting aspersions before the facts were clear. Seven other crew members of the ship have already been deported after prosecutors decided there was insufficient evidence against them. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory, has reported five cases of sea cable malfunctions this year, compared with three each in 2024 and 2023, according to its digital ministry.

Cop charged with killing Nur Farah Kartini in Hulu Bernam plantation pleads not guilty
SHAH ALAM, June 12 — The policeman accused of murdering Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah, whose body was found in an oil palm plantation last year, pleaded not guilty to the murder charge in the High Court here today. Lance Corporal Muhammad Alif Monjani, 27, made the plea before Judge Julia Ibrahim, who then set July 15 for mention. The policeman was charged with murdering the 25-year-old woman at the SKC Kledang oil palm plantation, Hulu Bernam near here, between 9 am on July 10, 2024, and 6 pm, July 15 last year. The charge, framed under Section 302 of the Penal Code, provides a sentence of hanging to death or imprisonment for not more than 40 years and whipping of not less than 12 strokes, upon conviction. Muhammad Alif, who arrived in court wearing a T-shirt and accompanied by policemen, was represented by lawyers Nur Aida Md Zainuddin and Aida Jaafar, while the prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Maizatul Munirah Abdul Rahman. He was first charged with murdering the Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris student on July 26, 2024, at the Kuala Kubu Bharu Magistrate's Court and on May 28, the case was transferred to the Shah Alam High Court for trial. Nur Farah Kartini was reported missing on July 10, 2024, before her body was found at about 6 pm, five days later, in an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sri Keledang, Hulu Bernam.— Bernama
