Elderly Sikh man brutally assaulted in LA, suspect in custody
Harpal Singh, 70, was assaulted by "unhoused" man Bo Richard Vitagliano while he was taking his daily walk near the Sikh Gurdwara of Los Angeles on August 4. The Los Angeles Police Department said in a statement on Tuesday (August 12, 2025) that Mr. Vitagliano, 44, was arrested on Monday (August 11, 2025) for the 'brutal attack' against Mr. Singh.
Mr. Vitagliano has been booked for assault with a deadly weapon, and his bail was set for $1.1 million.
Advocacy group The Sikh Coalition said that while the suspect is in custody for the brutal assault on Mr. Singh, the police are not investigating the case as a hate crime.
It said Mr. Singh has sustained very serious injuries during the assault and remains in critical condition.
The police said that on August 4, law enforcement officials responded to a radio call of an 'assault with a deadly weapon investigation.' Preliminary investigation revealed there was a physical altercation between Mr. Singh and Mr. Vitagliano, who is an 'unhoused' individual. Witnesses said while they did not see how the altercation began, they heard a loud commotion, then witnessed two men swinging metal objects at each other, the LAPD said. Both individuals were struck and Mr. Vitagliano further assaulted Mr. Singh while he was reportedly on the ground. When witnesses intervened by yelling at Mr. Vitagliano, he rode away on his bicycle.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded and transported Mr. Singh to a nearby hospital where he was admitted for a skull fracture and potential brain trauma. Mr. Singh continues to be under the care of a physician due to injuries suffered in the altercation.
Mr. Vitagliano has an extensive criminal record for narcotics, assault with a deadly weapon, and various weapons charges. Based upon the evidence in this matter, police believe the assault was not a hate crime, but instead motivated by a dispute over property belonging to the victim.
LAPD said local officers will be conducting extra patrols in the area following this incident and will continue engaging the community to discuss public safety and address any further concerns of the Sikh community.
The Sikh Coalition noted that it is 'impossible to completely rule out that this is a hate crime at this stage. The suspect has been in custody for less than 24 hours, and Harpal ji himself remains unconscious and has thus been unable to sit for a full police interview, with professional translation services, separate from a conversation immediately after the attack." "After such an interview happens, if the LAPD still believes this was not a hate crime, they must publicly clarify how they determined hate was not a factor in this assault,' it said.
Singh's brother Dr Gurdial Singh Randhawa said he is grateful that the police have arrested a suspect for the horrific assault, but 'we need to better understand this attack and why it is not being considered a hate crime." "Justice must be served, and our local Sikh community must know that the area around our gurdwara—where we gather to worship, learn, connect, eat, and serve others—is safe for all,' he added.

Harjinder Singh faces deportation from US: Shocking footage shows semi-truck driver taking rogue U-turn, killing 3
An Indian man, identified as Harjinder Singh, reportedly faces deportation from the US after he was held responsible for the violent crash. Harjinder Singh, a semi-truck driver, came under the scanner after a video showed him taking an illegal U-turn that claimed three lives on the Florida Turnpike. The incident took place near Fort Pierce around 3 pm on August 12 when Singh allegedly attempted to cut across the highway through an "official use only" median pass, the Times of India reported. He was operating a commercial semi-truck with a trailer. This resulted in the trailer jackknifing and colliding with a minivan — leaving all three of the minivan's passengers dead, according to officials. The video, which has now gone viral, showed a view from inside the cab of the semi-truck driver. Suddenly, the driver makes a U-turn, causing a minivan behind it to crash into the huge vehicle. Singh appears unmoved by the horror crash. Photos from the scene showed the van torn apart, its roof peeled back and its other scattered across the highway. A post shared from the Official White House Rapid Response addressed the incident. It stated that "this individual", Harjinder Singh, "is an illegal immigrant who was granted a commercial driver's license by the State of California — and now, three innocent people are dead." "He has been arrested for vehicular homicide and an ICE detainer has been issued," the Rapid Response posted on X. Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson told Fox News Digital in an email, "This is a devastating tragedy made even worse by the fact that it was totally preventable." "The actions taken by the defendant while operating a commercial tractor-trailer are both shocking and criminal," the Florida Dept. of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV) Executive Director Dave Kerner said in a statement. According to reports, Harjinder Singh has been staying in the USA illegally since 2018. He reportedly carried a California commercial driver's licence. The Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer against him. Singh remains in custody on state and federal charges, but the FLHSMV said that he will be deported when the state charges are resolved. If convicted of homicide, he faces prison time in Florida before deportation, New York Post claimed. "Illegal aliens that have no legal right to be in our country certainly should not be granted commercial drivers' licenses," Abigail Jackson was quoted as saying.

Harjinder Singh faces deportation: Trucker who took reckless U-turn in Florida killed 3; was in US illegally since 2018
A shocking crash caught on video has left three people dead after a minivan ploughed into a tractor-trailer making a reckless U-turn on the Florida Turnpike last week, authorities said. The truck driver — identified as Harjinder Singh, an illegal migrant — has been charged with three counts of vehicular homicide. The fatal collision unfolded around 3 pm Tuesday near Fort Pierce, when Singh allegedly attempted to cut across the highway through an 'official use only' median pass. His truck's massive trailer blocked all lanes of oncoming traffic, leaving drivers with no room to stop or swerve. Footage from inside the cab showed a black minivan speeding toward the trailer, with only seconds to impact. The van smashed into the trailer at full force, wedging underneath in a devastating collision that reduced the vehicle to mangled metal. — CollinRugg (@CollinRugg) Photos from the scene showed the van torn apart, its roof peeled back, and its contents scattered across the highway. Emergency crews used hydraulic jacks to lift the trailer and recover the victims, while Singh was seen standing nearby with a blank expression. Two passengers in the minivan died instantly, while the driver was pulled alive from the wreck but succumbed to injuries at a local hospital. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Could This NEW Collagen Blend Finally Reduce Your Cellulite? Immigration and Customs Enforcement has issued a detainer against him, according to CBS 12. If convicted of homicide, he faces prison time in Florida before deportation. 'Three people lost their lives as a result of his recklessness, and countless friends and family members will experience the pain of their loss forever,' said Dave Kerner to CBS 12, executive director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles.
