C4 Corvette ZR-1 Rescued After 20 Years in English Backyard, Brought Back to Life
After sitting idle for two decades, a rare 1990 Corvette ZR-1 is revived in the UK, showcasing its Lotus-engineered power and historic legacy.
In the latest episode of The Late Brake Show, host Jonny Smith uncovers a rare gem: a 1990 Corvette ZR-1 that spent 20 years gathering dust in an English backyard. This unique C4-generation Corvette, once the pinnacle of American sports car engineering, had been parked for decades by its owner, a Corvette enthusiast named Will, until two collectors decided to bring it back to life.
Back in 1990, Chevrolet launched the Corvette ZR-1 as its most powerful sports car, designed to rival Ferraris and Porsches but at half the price. The ZR-1's secret weapon was its engine—a dual-overhead-cam, 32-valve, aluminum-block LT5, engineered by none other than Lotus. GM had purchased Lotus and tapped into their expertise for the ZR-1, outsourcing the LT5's design to the British engineering powerhouse. Due to Lotus's limited production capacity, manufacturing was handed over to Mercury Marine, an unlikely partner whose precise craftsmanship made the LT5 an exceptional engine. Early models packed 375 horsepower, while later ZR-1s pushed 405 hp, offering a driving experience unlike any Corvette before it.
Beyond its engine, the ZR-1 was fitted with high-performance components like the Bilstein FX3 suspension, originally seen on the Porsche 959 and modified by the Lotus F1 team. Enhanced brakes and exclusive Goodyear Eagle tires made the ZR-1 a powerful and precise road machine. However, despite its prowess, this particular ZR-1 ended up in the backyard of a Corvette-loving English farmer. Life's responsibilities and lack of time relegated the car to a stationary display until its recent rescue.
In the episode, Smith and the car's new owners work to revive the ZR-1, sharing stories with Will about its history and significance. This iconic American sports car, reborn in the English countryside, reminds us of the unique global collaboration behind its creation and the enduring appeal of the Corvette ZR-1. As it roars back to life, this classic car finds new appreciation, far from its original American home.

Sam Mayer Captures First Xfinity Win for Haas Factory at Iowa, Snaps Chevy's 13-Race Win Streak
Sam Mayer secured his spot in the playoffs with a win at Iowa Speedway, rebounding after missing his pit box following the first stage on Saturday evening. With this win, Mayer brings the first trophy back to the new Haas Factory Team and ends Chevrolet's 13-race win streak. This was the first time that a Toyota won since Chandler Smith won the 2024 season finale at Phoenix. Mayer led for the first time on the final restart, taking the spot away from Jesse Love. Mayer was cruising to his victory over Love and the rest of the field when the yellow flag waved on the final lap with Garrett Smithley going around, ending the race under caution. Love, who spent most of the day in the top ten, struggled throughout the race with his racing setup. Connor Zilisch got out to an early lead in hopes of winning his fourth race in a row and was leading at the end of the first stage before a pit row issue buried him in the midpack. Zilisch had to go down pit row twice during the first stage break after the No. 88 pit crew failed to secure a tire on the first stop. Ross Chastain took the lead from Jesse Love in the second stage to lead 120 laps and ultimately finished third. JR Motorsports teammates Chastain, Zilisch, and Justin Allgaier were involved in a crash after a restart on lap 213, with the three getting tangled in turn one on lap 214, when a mistake by Zilisch sent Chastain into Allgaier. Zilisch appologized to his teammates after the race, and Chastain was happy to not be the aggressor in a teammate battle. "[He was] apologizing for hitting me into the No. 7," Chastain told The CW Sports." It was nice to not be the aggressor teammate." In the closing laps, Zilisch passed Harrison Burton for fourth as Burton settled for his second top five of the season. Prayers Pouring In For Kyle Busch After 'Scary' Practice Crash
Prayers Pouring In For Kyle Busch After 'Scary' Practice Crash originally appeared on The Spun. The bad luck just keeps pouring on for NASCAR star Kyle Busch as a crash in practice left his car a mess and had fans scrambling to make sure he was okay. During practice in Iowa today, Busch was doing a practice lap and things seemed to be going fine until his car swerved coming off a turn. Losing control, Busch's Chevrolet smashed nearly head-on with a wall before bouncing off. Flames could be seen emerging from the inside of the car as it spun into a stop. Concern quickly mounted for Busch as not everyone could see whether he was able to get out of the car safely. "Yeah almost head on, that was insane what a crash. Nice to know they have safer barriers unlike Indy last week. Glad he's ok," one user replied. "I'm so glad he's ok," wrote another. "That hit was scary, what broke?" a third wondered. Busch appeared to be fine but his car was an absolute mess once it made it back into the garage: Busch was released from medical treatment and spoke to reporters afterwards. He remarked that his No. 8 car had been struggling with "rear chatter" leading up to the crash. He lamented going into the fateful turn with "too much trust" and was punished with right rear chattering and overcorrecting, leading to the impact with the wall. More bad luck for Busch The story of the 2025 NASCAR Cup Series and really the past two seasons for Busch have been one bit of bad luck after another. He has now gone two calendar years without winning a race and has not led a single lap over the last 10 races - the longest such streak of his storied racing career. Busch is still in the hunt for a spot in the NASCAR Cup playoffs. But he's on a razor-thin edge and would be near the back of the pack in the points-only qualification. Last year he missed the playoffs entirely, so he'll need a dazzling finish if he wants to get in at all. In the meantime, we're just glad that he's Pouring In For Kyle Busch After 'Scary' Practice Crash first appeared on The Spun on Aug 2, 2025 This story was originally reported by The Spun on Aug 2, 2025, where it first appeared.
