Couple face multiple drug trafficking charges
Tie Teck Hock, 52, was initially charged with trafficking 1,030.80g of methamphetamine outside a food outlet at Jalan Pedada around 10pm on June 12.
He nodded in understanding when the charge was read by a court interpreter before magistrate Oon Kork Chern.
Subsequently, Tie and his wife, Lee Chee Fei, 45, were jointly charged with trafficking 6,055.90g of methamphetamine found in a house at Jalan Permai Jaya 9D1B1 at 10.45pm the same day.
They were charged under Section 39B(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment and not less than 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction.
The couple were also jointly charged with possession of 2,078.90g of ketamine and 2,022.15g of nimetazepam at the same location, time and date.
The charges were brought under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which provides for a fine not exceeding RM100,000, or imprisonment for a maximum of five years, or both, upon conviction.
Both the accused indicated they understood the charges, but no plea was recorded.
Tie was previously released on police bail on June 26 following the expiry of his seven-day remand, but was subsequently rearrested under the Dangerous Drugs (Special Preventive Measures) Act 1985.
Lee was also released on police bail on June 24 after her four-day remand ended, but was similarly rearrested under the same Act.
The court fixed Aug 22 for further mention of the cases pending the chemist's report.
No bail was granted to either accused.
Deputy public prosecutor Nuralisa Natasha Nazrulzam appeared for the prosecution, while counsel Reena Chong represented the couple. — BERNAMA

Kelantan Customs seize RM10 million worth of ganja buds in Rantau Panjang
RANTAU PANJANG: The Kelantan Customs Department seized six bags containing 180 packets of ganja buds worth about RM10 million during a series of operations in Rantau Panjang on April 23. Kelantan Customs director Wan Jamal Abdul Salam Wan Long said two men and two women were detained during the operations, which began around 10.30am. He said several Customs officers from the Rantau Panjang enforcement branch had earlier spotted three bags that were left abandoned near Gate 1 of the Rantau Panjang Free Zone. "Checks revealed 88 transparent plastic packets suspected to be ganja buds. "At the same time, officers also inspected a woman riding pillion on a motorcycle passing through the same gate and found another 32 similar packets in her bag," he said in a statement today. He said the woman and all seized items were taken to the Rantau Panjang enforcement office for further investigation. Based on information obtained from the suspect, Customs officers conducted a second raid at 11.00am at the Rantau Panjang express bus terminal, where two more bags containing 60 transparent packets of ganja buds were discovered. A man and a woman were arrested at the scene. "In total, 180 packets weighing 102.178kg were confiscated, with an estimated street value of more than RM10 million," said Wan Jamal. He added that the syndicate was believed to be using illegal jetties along Sungai Golok and exploiting the free zone area as a smuggling route. The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty upon conviction. Wan Jamal called on the public to cooperate with authorities and report any smuggling activities involving drugs, cigarettes, alcohol, firecrackers, or vehicles. "Smuggling causes national revenue losses and poses serious threats to national security and the people's well-being," he added.

Police seize 936 fighting cocks, arrest trio in Sabah raid
PAPAR: Police seized 936 fighting cocks of Philippine breed and arrested three men, including two foreigners, during a raid in Kampung Kambizaan, Sabah. The operation, conducted on Friday, was a joint effort between Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department and the Kota Kinabalu Veterinary Services Department. Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim, director of Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department, confirmed the arrests and seizures. 'Among the items seized were 30 iron cages, 107 tagging rods from the Philippines, and various types of vitamins and medications for the birds,' he said in a statement. Five arrested in Kelantan for illegal moneylending, including red paint attacks on borrowers' homes
KOTA BHARU, July 28 — Police have arrested five suspects believed to be involved in illegal moneylending activities, including threats and acts of mischief, such as splashing red paint on borrowers' homes. Kelantan police chief Datuk Mohd Yusoff Mamat said the suspects, aged between 25 and 39, were detained under Op Vulture in separate raids. The first suspect was apprehended on July 23 in Pasir Tumboh, Kubang Kerian, while the other four were arrested on July 25 following a red paint incident in Pasir Hor. Police also seized 34 items believed to have been used in these activities, including red paint, threatening notes, clothing, face masks, mobile phones, and motorcycles. 'Preliminary investigations revealed that all five suspects are believed to be linked to at least nine cases of property damage in Kota Bharu, Tumpat, and Tanah Merah. 'Their actions included breaking window panes with stones, pasting threatening notes, and padlocking borrowers' gates as a form of intimidation,' he said in a statement tonight. Mohd Yusoff said the case is being investigated under Section 5(2) of the Moneylenders Act 1951 and Sections 427/506 of the Penal Code.
