Cork museum which honours pioneering woman earns national and global recognition
In the very same week that the Cork-based museum was awarded Full Accreditation under the Museum Standards Programme for Ireland (MSPI) by the Heritage Council, it was also recognised with a Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award for 2025, placing it among the top 10% of visitor attractions worldwide.
Together, these two honours offer a powerful affirmation of Nano Nagle Place's impact, both within the museum sector and in the hearts of its visitors.
Nano Nagle Place tells the extraordinary story of Nano Nagle, an 18th-century trailblazer who defied Ireland's oppressive Penal Laws to secretly educate poor Catholic children.
At a time when such acts were illegal and dangerous, Nano risked everything to bring learning and dignity to those most excluded.
Today, the museum stands as a vibrant blend of heritage and living values and has become a cultural landmark for both locals and visitors, continuing her legacy of courage, compassion, and justice.
Full MSPI Accreditation is the highest standard of museum excellence in Ireland, awarded by The Heritage Council following a rigorous and comprehensive assessment process.
It recognises best practice in areas such as collections care, visitor experience, governance, and educational programming.
This achievement reflects years of dedicated work by the team at Nano Nagle Place, in close collaboration with the Presentation Sisters Congregational Archives, a shared commitment to preserving and sharing Nano's legacy with care, integrity, and purpose.
'Nano Nagle Place is more than a museum, it's a living legacy,' said John Smith, CEO of Nano Nagle Place. 'These awards are a powerful endorsement of our mission to honour a pioneering woman whose impact still resonates today.'

This national honour has now been matched by global recognition.
Based entirely on visitor reviews and ratings, Nano Nagle Place has received a 2025 Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice Award, an accolade that places it among the top 10% of attractions worldwide.
This award is a powerful endorsement from the people who matter most, those who walk through the museum doors and experience the story first-hand.
Susannah Ahern, Programme, Heritage & Education Manager at Nano Nagle Place said visitors often tell them they are surprised by how moved they are. 'Our museum doesn't just preserve history, it brings Nano's values to life, and that emotional connection really stays with people.'
These recent honours shine a spotlight not only on the historical significance of Nano Nagle Place, but also on its continued relevance today.
More than a museum, the site is alive with Nano's spirit, championing inclusion, education, and social justice through projects like the Lantern Project, the Cork Migrant Centre, the Men's Group, and a spirituality programme that honour Nano's vision of reflective action.
As the only museum in Ireland dedicated to the life and legacy of a woman, Nano Nagle Place offers a powerful and inspiring visitor experience.
In this unique space, history, hope, and heritage come together - and one woman's defiance in the face of injustice continues to light the way forward.

BirdWatch Ireland to host walk at East Coast Nature Reserve
BirdWatch Ireland is inviting members of the public to discover the wildlife of the East Coast Nature Reserve in Co. Wicklow. The conservation organisation is hosting an evening nature walk at the site at 7:00p.m on Tuesday, August 19 as part of its celebration of National Heritage Week 2025. Experts will be on hand during the event to discuss the birds, insects, mammals, plants and other wildlife that live at the nature reserve. The nature walk, which is free of charge, is open to all and requires no prior knowledge of wildlife. During the 90-minute walk, participants will be taken on a tour of the nature reserve's network of trails, boardwalks and observation hides. Officially opened in 2009, the East Coast Nature Reserve is BirdWatch Ireland's largest reserve covering 92ha. It forms part of the extensive Murrough Wetlands, an important coastal wetland complex which is designated as a Special Protection Area (SPA) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC). The grasslands were originally intensively farmed, with tree-lined watercourses and a conifer plantation growing within the fen. Following management through an EU LIFE project between 2003 and 2007, the reserve now offers a variety of habitats, from rare fen to wet grasslands to birch woodland. Among the bird species to visit the reserve are whooper swans, shovelers, little egrets, and swallows. The nature walk is funded by the Heritage Council's Heritage Organisation Support Fund, as part of BirdWatch Ireland's Communicating the Wonders of Irish Wildlife 2025-26 project.

Taoiseach wishes son a 'lifetime of happiness' after engagement news
Taoiseach Micheal Martin has wished his son a 'lifetime of happiness' after he announced his engagement while on holiday with his long term girlfriend. Micheal Jnr has been dating Maryclaire Lynch for the last few years. The son of the Fianna Fail leader announced he had popped the question to his long-term love while on holiday in Montenegro, saying it was 'a successful holiday'. The Taoiseach said he is delighted with the news. In a statement said: 'He wishes them a lifetime of happiness and the very best for the future.' Maryclaire can be seen sporting a gorgeous oval diamond ring informing everyone of their looming nuptials. The backdrop for this life milestone of theirs was the scenic lake in Kotor Bay. Micheal Aodh Martin is a familiar face and name in his own right to Gaelic football fans as he's been Cork's first-choice goalkeeper for years. Despite being off the market, he received attention when he was voting alongside his father in 2018 for his good looks. Given the nickname 'Micheál's hot son,' his father admitted that his son was on the receiving end of 'an awful slagging from his teammates at the time.' Speaking with Doireann Garrihy on the Laughs of Your Life podcast Mr Martin said of the reaction: '(He got) an awful slagging from the teammates at the time. I think it took off because the marriage equality issue was taking off and my assistant came to the polling booth and just took an innocent enough snap and posted it and it went viral. 'He was gone off for the weekend. So, I think he dove for cover in Kerry.' Mr Martin said just by being from Cork, 'you're born with a sense of humour' but 'if you have any notions, they'll take you down to size'. Cork restaurant with two Michelin stars announces replacement after chef-patron steps down
Terre , one of only five restaurants in Ireland with two Michelin stars, has appointed a replacement for executive chef Vincent Crepel following his surprise announcement two weeks ago to depart the fine dining restaurant at the luxury Castlemartyr Resort in east Co Cork . Crepel had served as executive chef since the restaurant's opening in September 2022 and pursued ambitious plans to quickly achieve two Michelin stars. In March 2023, six months after opening, the restaurant achieved its first Michelin star, with the second one awarded in January of last year. Lewis Barker, originally from Leeds in the UK, will join Terre from Singapore. He was the youngest chef in Singapore to earn a Michelin star at 27 at Vianney Massot, six months after its opening. Barker was most recently head chef at the one-Michelin-starred Sommer, which closed in October of last year. Crepel has said he will remain on in his position at Terre until the end of September with Barker expected to take over on October 1st. READ MORE Castlemartyr Resort was bought in 2021 for €20 million by Dr Stanley Quek and Peng Loh whose international hospitality portfolio includes hotels and Michelin-starred restaurants in Australia, Singapore, China, the UK and Ireland. They spent €8 million upgrading the hotel, which included adding a second restaurant in a 17th century manor on the estate, Terre. In his statement last month Crepel said: 'Building Terre has been one of the most beautiful and meaningful journeys of my career. We created more than a restaurant, we shaped a space with soul, purpose, and intention.' Following Sommer restaurant's closure in Singapore it was signalled Barker would remain within its ownership group, Ebb & Flow, led by chief executive Lim Kian Chun. His decision to now move to Co Cork may raise eyebrows in the Singaporean food world as Quek and Loh are big competitors of Lim Kian Chun in the fine dining scene there. Vincent Crepel, chef patron at Terre restaurant Barker describes his cooking as classically rooted in the French technique, modernised through local surroundings and flavours experienced from his time in Asia. His culinary profile is a good fit for Terre which serves contemporary cuisine with Asian flavours. 'I am excited at the challenge of leading Terre into the future and being situated in such a beautiful part of the world,' Barker said in a statement. 'My aim is to continue to preserve the ethos of Terre, and I look forward to building on that foundation alongside the talented team with a cuisine that celebrates Ireland's incredible produce and culinary heritage'.
