Seized 1MDB paintings put up for auction, but art world sniffs at sketchy-looking website
A Texas-based auction house called Gaston and Sheehan, located in Pflugerville, has received the government contract to handle the sale of these pieces: two Basquiat works titled Self Portrait (1982) and Red Man One (1982), Picasso's Tête de taureau et broc (1939), and Arbus's Child with a Toy Hand Grenade.
The digital auction commenced on July 16 and will conclude on September 4, with buyers notably exempt from paying any additional premium fees, ARTnews reported
Industry professionals and art consultants interviewed by ARTnews described the pieces as exceptional quality works whose opening bid amounts appear remarkably low when compared to historical market values and comparable sales data.
However, the basic design of the auction website and the controversial origins tied to a wanted international criminal could discourage serious collectors in what is already a challenging art market environment.
Consultant Dane Jensen said that while the venue may lack prestige, it represents a potentially lucrative opportunity for astute collectors willing to overlook the unconventional circumstances.
Art consultant Arushi Kapoor expressed scepticism about the platform's credibility, explaining to ARTnews that her clientele would likely avoid the poorly designed website, and that she herself might suspect fraudulent activity if someone had recommended the site to her.
Justice Department records from July 2020 reveal that Christopher Joey McFarland voluntarily turned over the Basquiat Self Portrait to federal authorities, with McFarland being the co-founder of Red Granite Pictures alongside Riza Shahriz Abdul Aziz, the stepson of ex-prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
The same partnership between McFarland and Aziz was responsible for financing the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.
Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho, commonly referred to as Jho Low and currently a fugitive from justice, acquired the remaining three artworks during 2012-2014 and subsequently presented them as gifts to Hollywood actor and art enthusiast Leonardo DiCaprio, who had both starring and producing roles in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Loni Anderson, ‘WKRP in Cincinnati' star, dies at 79
LOS ANGELES, Aug 4 — Loni Anderson, best known for her role as Jennifer Marlowe on WKRP in Cincinnati, died Sunday at age 79 in Los Angeles from 'an acute prolonged illness'. Her death was confirmed by publicist Cheryl J. Kagan, according to The Hollywood Reporter (THR). Anderson, a two-time Emmy nominee, rose to fame playing the savvy radio receptionist in the sitcom created by Hugh Wilson. Before that, she appeared in shows like S.W.A.T., Police Woman, Barnaby Jones and Phyllis, and had auditioned for the role of Chrissy Snow on Three's Company. THR reported that she initially turned down the WKRP role, saying in a 2020 interview, 'I don't want to play this part because she's just here to deliver messages and is window dressing.' Creator Hugh Wilson asked her how she'd approach it, and they reimagined the character: 'Let's make her look like Lana Turner and be the smartest person in the room.' Anderson's Jennifer broke the 'dumb blond' mould, refusing to do secretarial tasks and standing out as sharp and self-assured. She appeared in all but one of the show's 90 episodes from 1978 to 1982. Born August 5, 1945, in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Anderson was the daughter of Klaydon, an environmental chemist, and Maxine, a model. Naturally dark-haired, she once said, 'I loved being a brunette… there was a mystery. When acting, I could be the bad lady.'

‘There is no falsehood in my claims': Japanese teen idol files police report after alleged rape and pregnancy by producer's boyfriend
TOKYO, Aug 3 — A 19-year-old Japanese teen idol has filed a police report after allegedly being raped and impregnated by the boyfriend of the group's producer and influencer, Yurinya. The allegations were first leaked by Japanese YouTuber Korekore on August 1 and later confirmed by Yurinya in a social media statement, according to a report by Koreaboo. Yurinya named her former partner in the statement, saying, 'I am deeply saddened and feel a strong sense of responsibility that someone I trusted, Taichi Saito, committed such an extremely irresponsible and inconsiderate act.' 'As a producer and an individual, I want to make it clear that I strongly denounce his actions and have completely severed all personal and professional ties with him.' Korekore claimed that the idol, a member of Japanese idol group Pretty Chuu — identified as Ten-ten in Yurinya's statement and as Shuna Amamiya in Japanese media reports — was secretly undressed and filmed while asleep at Yurinya's home. Although Saito later apologised to her via Line messages, it was alleged that he subsequently raped her while she was asleep, resulting in a pregnancy and later, an abortion. Korekore alleged that Saito pressured Amamiya to stay silent and offered a settlement of ¥1 million (approximately RM28,878). Amamiya reportedly reached out to Korekore for help before filing a police report. Yurinya said she first learned of the incident through the leaked post and confirmed its accuracy after speaking with those involved. She pledged to prioritise the affected member's well-being and strengthen the group's support systems. In the statement, Yurinya also apologised to the idol involved, the other Pretty Chuu members, the staff and the fans for the worry and trouble caused by the incident. Pretty Chuu management had previously cited 'chronic illness' as the reason for Amamiya's hiatus. A recent review of the group's official Instagram page showed only five members, despite Pretty Chuu debuting with six. In a Twitter update yesterday, Korekore shared conflicting accounts of the incident: Amamiya claimed, 'There was no consent while in a drunken state,' while Saito said, 'They kissed me, and it was consensual.' Japanese police are reportedly reconstructing the situation, as the incident occurred in private and evidence remains inconclusive. Korekore revealed that Amamiya visited a hospital to request medical records in order to clarify whether her pregnancy was linked to the alleged assault or a previous relationship. 'The documents will arrive by mail in a few days,' they said. Amamiya has announced her withdrawal from idol activities and asserted, 'There is no falsehood in my claims.' Korekore urged the public to refrain from slandering either party as investigations are ongoing. Pretty Chuu debuted on June 16 and is described by its producer as embodying 'strength,' 'transience,' 'innocence' and 'pure maiden heart.' * If you are experiencing sexual violence, the following hotlines offer free and confidential support: Talian Kasih at 15999 or WhatsApp 019-2615999 (24/7); All Women's Action Society at 016-2374221/016-2284221 (9.30am-5.30pm); and Women's Aid Organisation (WAO) at 03-30008858 or SMS/WhatsApp TINA 018-9888058 (24/7)
