We have been a little dishonest with our cinema: Aahana Kumra

Aahana Kumra Cinema is going through a dull phase, and the only way to rise above it is to make honest cinema, believes Bollywood actor Aahana Kumra . 'We have been a little dishonest with our cinema. We are basically churning out the same stories. Audiences now want to experience new topics, and unless you give them that, they will not go to the theatres,' she tells Bangalore Times. Excerpts from a conversation with the actor, who was the showstopper at the latest edition of Bangalore Times Fashion Week. 'ACTORS NEED TO MAINTAIN SOME MYSTERY' You Can Also Check: Bengaluru AQI | Weather in Bengaluru | Bank Holidays in Bengaluru | Public Holidays in Bengaluru 'An actor's job is to be a part of cinema that people can consume; they embody a role. An influencer's job is to share their lives on social media, be it through reels or dance videos. I think that an actor loses value when they begin to do an influencer's job. Also, it is only in India that influencers are considered for roles because of their fan following. This is rarely seen in the West,' she shares. 'BY RELEASING A MOVIE ON OTT TOO SOON, YOU RUIN THE SURPRISE' Reflecting on the evolving relationship between audiences and the big screen, Aahana says, 'Everyone knows they can just wait a month or two to watch a movie at home. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ranked: The 25 Best Cities To Live In The World Learn More Undo So, why would they spend money and energy to go watch it in theatres? As a theatre artiste, I feel the reason our shows are packed is because it's not going to be on TV, so the audience has to come to the show to know the story.' 'I AM PICKY ABOUT WORK. I WILL NOT SAY YES TO EVERYTHING' The actor tells us she has been selective about her projects in recent years. 'I have done some good work over the years, but I've not said yes to anything in the past three years. I want to do roles that people will remember me for,' she says, and adds, 'I never stopped doing theatre. It's something that gives me joy. I also enrolled in a lot of classes to keep myself busy and to upskill myself.' 'IT'S TIME NEW FACES ARE CONSIDERED FOR ROLES' She doesn't hold back when it comes to calling out gender disparities in casting. 'Be it OTT or cinema, there are a hundred roles written for men, while there are very few of them for women. And so many female actors fight for that one role. Then, you see the same faces being repeated; it's like they don't want to consider anyone else. Why would you take a modern woman for the role of a village belle from Uttar Pradesh? Why not cast people according to what the role demands," she adds. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). Friendship Day, Bengaluru style: Where puppy yoga met some old-school bonds

Friendship Day in Bengaluru wasn't just about staged selfies and catching up over brews. This time, it was puppy yoga meets DIY nostalgia. In association with Bangalore Times, Dialogues Cafe in Koramangala hosted a fun-filled Sunday where friends struck playful yoga poses and created funky new DIY friendship bands from that day's Friendship Day special edition of the newspaper. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Among the crowd were Priyanka Chatterjee and Prajwala Jalan — besties for 27 years, from kindergarten in Assam to living minutes apart in Bengaluru. 'Even if we haven't spoken for months, she'll show up — no drama, no judgment,' said Priyanka. 'Bad day? I land up, we binge on junk, and I leave lighter,' added Prajwala. Growing up and becoming adults together, my best friend and I navigated life's experiences and phases. But our bond remained unchanged. That's friendship to me Priyanka Chatterjee, IT professional Even filmmaker Indrajit Lankesh joined the puppy yoga and paper band fun, making some young friends along the way. But it wasn't just childhood pals reuniting — office besties showed up too.. 'They know your mood before you speak,' said HR professional Hema Negi. For Gitika, Suman, Irene, and Mina, workplace friendship is a survival skill. 'Different roles, same bond. No awkwardness, just respect,' they said in sync. By sundown, the day felt like a pause from the chaos — a reminder that the best bonds take time, but deserve every moment of celebration. Before social media, friendship was simple - handwritten notes, DIY gifts, creating together. This wasn't just nostalgia, it was a return to something honest Udai Kiran, Dialogues Cafe

We are more than friends; we are soul sisters: Krishi and Anupama

A friendship built on silence, strength, and silliness: that's what ties BFFs and actors and together. 'If you can sit in silence without it feeling awkward, be each other's rock through the highs and lows, and be absolutely silly together, that's real friendship,' the duo tell Bangalore Times as they spend the day with us, laughing, reminiscing, and finishing each other's sentences… 'We're so alike… but also completely different' Anupama and Krishi tell us that their bond wasn't built on effort. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now It just happened through little coincidences. Identical coffee mugs, matching matcha cups, even the same clothes… 'It's weird. We somehow end up buying the same stuff every time!' laughs Krishi. But while their shopping carts might look the same, their personalities don't. 'She pretends to be all tough. Like she doesn't need care or love. But she does. She'll never say it, but I know,' Krishi says, nudging Anupama, who fires back, 'Krishi loves having people around. I love my space, but she drags me out.' Other women and friendships have let us down. But this bond we share? This is the real thing - Anupama Gowda 'We have big plans for the future... and whatever we do, we'll do it together' From dreaming of opening a restaurant to launching a kombucha bar, these two are always cooking up new plans. 'We keep changing our minds. But whatever we do, we'll do it together. We are proof that female friendships can not only survive but thrive in this industry that's so often clouded by competition,' says Krishi. 'Our friendship is basic… but it's pure bliss' And when they're hanging out, their time together is calm and uneventful. 'We don't need an agenda. We can sit silently, scroll on our phones, or cook. That's enough,' Krishi shrugs. Anupama agrees, 'We rant about our days, laugh, cry, and rewatch Friends over dinner.' They have a simple routine of grocery runs, gym sessions, flower shopping, and obsessing over plants, and they cherish that. 'It's a very basic, easy friendship. And it's bliss,' Anupama smiles.
