Crises in BJP, Congress may help JDS seize opportunity in Karnataka local body elections
To make the best of the present advantage and opportunity, JDS may even go it alone in the polls, party sources said. Its alliance partner BJP is struggling to put its house in order with the demand for a change in the state party president post. On the other hand, Congress is facing challenges with party MLAs openly expressing their displeasure over the functioning of the government and its ministers.
JDS has now launched a 57-day membership drive, focusing on the Old Mysuru region, which has been its traditional Vokkaliga bastion, and North Karnataka, where party patriarch HD Deve Gowda and his grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy are touring to garner support for the party, said Nagaraju, a party functionary.
Nikhil told reporters in Mandya on Sunday, 'I don't agree that there will be a political revolution in the state (as predicted by Cooperation Minister KN Rajanna), but people will throw away the Congress government after it completes three years in office. I toured Raichur district and grasped the pulse of the people. Not only JDS workers, but every person in the state feels (Union Minister for Heavy Industries) HD Kumaraswamy should become CM in 2028.'
Gowda's intervention to get the Centre to announce the minimum support price for mangoes, helping farmers, and Kumaraswamy's performance as a union minister to the satisfaction of Prime Minister Narendra Modi have boosted the morale of party workers, party sources said.
'If Siddaramaiah steps down as CM, the government will get destabilised. But it is too early to predict whether Vokkaligas will rally behind Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar if he becomes CM,' said a JD(S) sympathiser, who is also a Vokkaliga. The priority of JDS is zilla and taluk panchayat polls to keep its base intact, especially in the Old Mysuru region and expand it across the state, another party functionary said.
JDS Legislature Party leader B Suresh Babu said the party will have an edge in the local body polls because of the crisis in Congress. 'JDS is likely to continue its alliance with BJP and it will be decided ahead of polls. It will help both parties,' he added.

In a letter dated June 12, addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary of the Home Department at Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru, seeking voluntary retirement (VRS) from service, Barmani stated, 'Having been publicly insulted and humiliated by the Chief Minister for a mistake I did not commit, I am left with no other option but to voluntarily resign from my service. I request you to kindly accept my resignation.' The three-page letter outlines the emotional toll the incident has taken on the officer and the demoralising effect it has had on the entire police force. According to Barmani, the Chief Minister's 'rude and humiliating' behaviour while he was in uniform was a blow not just to him personally, but to the dignity of the police service as a whole. The controversy dates back to a Congress-led public protest in Belagavi against price rise. During the event, a group in the crowd waved black flags, triggering visible outrage from Siddaramaiah. Furious over the security lapse, the Chief Minister summoned Barmani, who was present near the dais, to the stage. In full public view and in front of media cameras, Siddaramaiah allegedly raised his hand in anger, apparently to slap Barmani. The officer reportedly stepped back to avoid the blow. Referring to the incident, Barmani wrote, 'The entire state saw the CM raise his hand to slap me on live television. Though I managed to avoid physical assault, I could not escape the humiliation of being disgraced before thousands, including senior political leaders and the media.'

Gandhis conspired to usurp Rs 2k crore co: ED in Herald case
NEW DELHI: ED on Wednesday told a special court that former Congress presidents Sonia and Rahul Gandhi wanted to take over a Rs 2,000 crore company - Associated Journals Limited (AJL) - that once published party organ National Herald. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The agency, through additional solicitor general (ASG) SV Raju, submitted before the court of Special Judge Vishal Gogne that a conspiracy was hatched to create Young Indian Pvt Ltd, a not-for-profit company, in which Sonia and Rahul held 76% shares (38% each), to siphon off assets of AJL in lieu of repaying a Rs 90 crore loan (taken by AJL) to Congress. This debt was converted into equity in favour of Young Indian (YI), ED argued. The agency argued that the whole scheme was conceived for the benefit of the Gandhis, who controlled YI as well as AJL, the latter, while being in loss, had enough assets to repay the loan. "Losses were to the tune of Rs 70 lakh. They (YI) didn't even have the wherewithal to pay Rs 50 lakh. During this time, Rahul and Sonia were directors of the company along with Sam Pitroda and others," said Raju, adding that AJL was not making profit but it had assets worth Rs 2,000 crore. "How come they (AJL and its functionaries) didn't have Rs 90 crore to repay the loan (given by Congress)? Any prudent person would've sold their assets to repay loans. This is absurd and can never be explained," the ASG argued. The hearing saw Raju refuting the suggestion that since AJL was started by the first PM, Jawahar Lal Nehru, it was alright for Congress to acquire it. Referring to Sonia and Rahul, ED said till 2015, only these two individuals were the actual beneficiaries with full control over AJL's assets and functioning. They were finding it difficult to manage their daily affairs. Thus, a Rs 90 crore loan was taken from Congress," ASG submitted. He said several senior Congress functionaries engaged in fake transactions that existed only on paper to divert funds to AJL, adding that fabricated rent receipts and fraudulent advance rent payments were made over several years.

Opposition walks out of Maharashtra Assembly over plight of farmers
Mumbai Opposition legislators staged a walkout from the Maharashtra Assembly on Wednesday, raising concerns over the 'deepening agrarian crisis', including alleged irregularities in soya bean procurement, non-payment of dues, and rising farmer suicides. Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar led the charge, highlighting the plight of soya bean farmers who have not received payments under the Minimum Support Price (MSP) scheme. 'Annadata has been betrayed,' he said, accusing the government of making false promises and delaying rightful payments. Mr. Wadettiwar said that in just the past three months, 767 farmers have died by suicide, with 200 cases declared ineligible for compensation and inquiries still pending in 194 cases. He moved an adjournment motion seeking a detailed discussion on the matter. Cooperation and Marketing Minister Jaykumar Rawal claimed soya bean procurement was conducted on a record scale across 562 centres, involving over 51,000 farmers. He said ₹5,500 crore had already been transferred directly into farmers' bank accounts. 'However, a controversy emerged during the talks involving the Andura Shetkari Company, a farmer group failed to deliver 1,297 quintals of soya bean to government warehouse despite logging procurement records,' he said.
