Nirmala Sitharaman highlights India's strong economic resilience at BRICS

India Gazette6 days ago
Rio de Janeiro [Brazil], July 7 (ANI): Speaking at the BRICS Finance Minister and Central Bank Governors meeting, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman highlighted India's demonstrated resilience through a combination of strong domestic demand, prudent macroeconomic management, and targeted fiscal measures.
The finance minister, as part of her intervention at the meeting, said that India's policy response to trade and financial restrictions has focused on diversifying markets, promoting infrastructure-led growth, and implementing structural reforms aimed at boosting competitiveness and productivity.
The Union Finance Minister underlined India's view that BRICS is a vital platform for advancing inclusive multilateralism, especially when global institutions are facing a crisis of legitimacy and representation -- BRICS must lead by example by reinforcing cooperation, advocating credible reforms, and amplifying the voice of the Global South.
Finance Minister Sitharaman also said that while South-South cooperation remains vital in advancing climate and development goals, the Global South should not be expected to carry the main burden of climate action, and BRICS countries are well placed to deepen cooperation on sustainable development.
According to the joint statement put out on Sunday, hours before the Summit, the Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the BRICS countries have called on advanced economies and the international financial system to provide 'substantial' finance for climate mitigation in developing economies.
'...We call on advanced economies and other relevant actors in the international financial system as well as the private sector to provide substantial finance for climate actions in developing countries, including by expanding concessional finance and increasing private capital mobilisation,' the joint statement read.
'Given the significant adaptation needs of EMDEs (Emerging Market and Developing Economies), we call on international financial institutions to scale up support for adaptation and to help create an enabling environment that encourages greater private sector participation in mitigation efforts,' the joint statement continued.
India, a BRICS member, has always been vocal about climate finance arrangements, primarily from the developed countries that are huge carbon emitters. India continued to be vocal about the need for adequate finance, particularly for the Global South.
Climate finance typically refers to any financing that seeks to support mitigation and adaptation actions that will address climate change.
Developing countries have been of the view that developed nations bear a greater historical responsibility for emissions and should take the lead in mitigation and finance.
Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors of the BRICS countries had gathered in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 5, 2025, under the theme 'Strengthening Global South Cooperation for More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance'.
BRICS member countries encompass almost half of the world's population, spreading across four continents, and their economies account for nearly 40 per cent of global Gross Domestic Product. (ANI)

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav said ₹1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme. CM Mohan Yadav's remarks came while addressing a program organised for Ladli Behna Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Social Security Pension Scheme on Saturday.(ANI) His remarks came while addressing a program organised for Ladli Behna Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana and Social Security Pension Scheme on Saturday. " ₹1,543.16 crore has been transferred to the bank accounts of 1.27 crore women under the Ladli Behna Yojana scheme... We are also providing help through the PM Ujjawala Yojana scheme and have provided ₹46 crore and 36 lakhs of the subsidy..." he said. Meanwhile, CM Mohan Yadav took a holy dip in the Shipra river at Narsingh Ghat located in Ujjain district and offered prayers. "I try to take a dip in the Shipra River every year here. It is an old spot and Narsingh Temple is located here, devotees come here to take a holy dip throughout the year, especially during the holy month of Sawan and earn virtue," CM Yadav told reporters. Earlier, CM Yadav participated in the Kanwar Yatra in Ujjain and also showered flowers to welcome the Kanwar Yatris. Yadav also highlighted that the state government would ensure tight security arrangements for all Kanwar Yatris, along with appropriate facilities. He further added that instructions in this regard were already issued. The Chief Minister welcomed Kanwar Yatris with a shower of flowers. He also performed worship of Kanwar, lifted it, and along with Mahamandaleshwar of Agni Akhada, Uttam Swami, began Kanwar Yatra by walking on foot. The Chief Minister said that the tradition of celebrating all festivals with enthusiasm has been initiated by the state government. With the blessings of God and saints, preparations for Simhastha-2028 in Ujjain are being carried out rapidly. "We are making all preparations with the thought that even if events like Simhastha are held every year after 2028, there should be no difficulty. Keeping in view Simhastha-2028, a 'Simhastha Dharmik City' is also being constructed in Ujjain for setting up ashrams and other arrangements for saints, so that convenient facilities can be ensured for the large number of devotees visiting Ujjain," he said. Addressing Kanwar Yatris, Chief Minister Yadav said there are many cultures in the world, and though there are 194 countries, no country begins any auspicious work by taking a vow with water. "Indian culture has always considered water as life itself, and a way of living. By the grace of God, we have been aware of the qualities of water for thousands of years." 'Sawan' holds a special place in Hindu mythology. Devotees undertake fasts and offer prayers to seek the blessings of Lord Shiva during this period. The chanting of Shiva mantras, singing bhajans (devotional songs), and performing Rudrabhishek (ceremonial bathing of Shiva Lingam with holy substances) are common practices observed with fervour across households and temples during 'Sawan' month.

FPIs continue to buy India stocks well into fourth month in July

New Delhi [India], July 13 (ANI): Foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) continued to remain net buyers in Indian stock markets well into the fourth month of July. Latest data made available by National Securities Depository Limited (NSDL) showed that FPIs had cumulatively bought domestic stocks worth ₹ 3,839 crore in July so far. In April, May, and June, the FPIs had accumulated stocks worth ₹ 4,223 crore, ₹ 19,860 crore, and ₹ 14,590 crore, respectively. FPIs had somewhat fueled the latest bull run in the stock market, after a sharp slump. The benchmark index Sensex is however quite below its all-time high of 85,978 points. The benchmark Sensex is now about 3,500 points below its all-time high. At one time, the Sensex had fallen about 13,000 points from its high. Indian stock markets outperformed global markets over the past few weeks, as volatility continued to reign in global markets over possible US reciprocal tariffs. As per the definition, Foreign Portfolio Investment involves an investor buying foreign financial assets. "The first three months of this year, FPI inflows were negative, and this trend was reversed in the next three months," said VK Vijayakumar, Chief Investment Strategist, Geojit Investments Limited, referring to FPI buying trends. "For 2025, so far, inflows show a negative figure... This is due to the massive selling that happened in January and February. An important trend in FPI investment is that FPIs have been consistent buyers/investors in the primary market even when they have been selling through the exchanges," Vijayakumar added. "Since other markets are cheaper relative to India, FIIs may again sell and move money to cheaper markets as a short-term strategy. In H1 2025, the Indian market underperformed most markets, including the MSCI EM index."

Martyrs Day: J&K CM Omar Abdullah says curbs, house arrest of politicians 'blatantly undemocratic move'

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Sunday alleged that several homes were "locked" from the outside, central forces were deployed as "jailers," and bridges in Srinagar were blocked to "stop" people from visiting a "historically important" graveyard. Ahead of July 13 Martyrs Day, several Jammu and Kashmir politicians were allegedly placed under house arrest(ANI) In a post on X, the JK CM said the graveyard contains the graves of those who "laid down their lives to give Kashmiris a voice" and criticised the administration's actions as "undemocratic". "In a blatantly undemocratic move homes have been locked from the outside, police & central forces deployed as jailers & major bridges in Srinagar blocked. All to stop people from visiting a historically important grave yard containing the graves of people who laid down their lives to give Kashmiris a voice & to empower them. I will never understand what the Law & Order government is so afraid of," Abdullah wrote. In another post, Abdullah compared the July 13 incident to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre and said the sacrifices of those who stood up to British rule should not be forgotten. "13th July massacre is our Jallianwala Bagh. The people who laid down their lives did so against the British. Kashmir was being ruled under the British Paramountcy. What a shame that true heroes who fought against British rule in all its forms are today projected as villains only because they were Muslims. We may be denied the opportunity to visit their graves today but we will not forget their sacrifices," he said. The JK Chief Minister's earlier tweet claiming that people were being "stopped" from entering the martyrs' graveyard was in response to a post by Jammu and Kashmir National Conference (JKNC) chief spokesperson and Zadibal MLA Tanvir Sadiq, who also alleged that several party leaders were confined to their homes to prevent them from "honouring' the martyrs of July 13. "Since last night, I like many of my colleagues, including the party leadership at Gupkar, the Advisor to the Chief Minister, and a majority of sitting MLAs have been locked inside my home. This is not just unfortunate; it is a deliberate attempt to suppress remembrance and deny us the right to honour the martyrs of July 13. Such actions are not only unnecessary they are unjustified, deeply insensitive, and reveal a troubling disregard for history," Sadiq posted on X.
