Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin become Malaysia's first world No. 1 men's doubles pair since 2016

Malay Mail27-05-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, May 27 — Malaysia's professional men's doubles pair, Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, have risen to become the world's number one pair in the latest update of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) rankings today.
The pair, with 91,090 points, climbed one spot ahead of the Danish duo Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen, who have 90,411 points, after the Danes failed to defend their title at last week's Malaysia Masters.
This achievement makes Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin the first Malaysian men's doubles pair to reach world number one since Goh V Shem and Tan Wee Kiong in 2016, joining the ranks of past Malaysian legends such as Razif-Jalani, Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong, and Cheah Soon Kit-Yap Kim Hock.
Earlier this year in January, Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin won the India Open but struggled to maintain momentum, failing to reach the semi-finals in any tournaments since.
The pair will next compete at the Singapore Open, where they will open their campaign against the Taiwanese duo Lee Fang Chih and Lee Fang Jen.
Meanwhile, another Malaysian men's doubles pair, Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yil, remain in third place worldwide, while Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun have jumped one spot to seventh following their victory at the 2025 Malaysia Masters last Sunday. — Bernama

The 23-year-old, who was captain of Johor Darul Ta'zim (JDT) during the team's pre-season stint in Spain, said the time abroad has further motivated him ahead of the Super League season starting next month. "I'm honoured by the trust placed in me. Rather than taking it as pressure, I saw it as an opportunity for me to prove myself both as a player and leader," said Arif after being announced as sportswear brand Puma's newest ambassador yesterday. "I learned a lot from that experience." Arif said there is no rivalry between local-born and heritage players in the national squad. "The presence of heritage players has been a big help to the team from time to time," he said. Arif also said the players are fully focused on preparing for September's friendlies against Singapore and Palestine, and declined to comment on Malaysia's withdrawal from the 2025 CAFA Nations Cup. "It doesn't affect me, I'm just focused on what lies ahead. Preparation is important, even in a friendly game. We need to be fully prepared for our next matches regardless of who we play," he said. The Harimau Malaya will play friendly matches against Singapore on Sept 4 and Palestine on Sept 8.
