In the nation's ‘loneliest city,' a sing-along brings strangers together
Dozens of people crammed into the living room, crowded on couches and chairs for a gathering unlike many in D.C. There would be no talk of politics, day jobs or even pets. There would be little talk at all.
These strangers had come together for a sing-along.
Leader Josh Korr started things off with the classics: 'Stand by Me,' 'Jolene,' and a kazoo-heavy rendition of 'Take on Me.'
Then, he decided to try something new — a medley of mid-aughts club hits.
'This takes inspiration from my college a cappella,' he said before launching into a detailed explanation of how the transition from OutKast's 'Hey Ya!' to 'I Gotta Feeling' by the Black Eyed Peas would work. A few nervous peels of laughter rang out.
'It's gonna be great and not a disaster,' Korr, 45, assured the group.
Soon, this ragtag choir was belting out, 'Tonight's gonna be a good night.' By the time they finished the final 'yeah, yeah, yeah' from Usher, smiles filled the room.
In a place labeled the 'loneliest city in America,' Korr's sing-alongs have been regularly drawing people together. The city earned that title because nearly half of all residents live alone. About a third of adults in D.C. have also reported feeling anxious or depressed, emotions that for some have been heightened by President Donald Trump's string of firings and funding threats. (One sign of the times: Local dentists report an influx of teeth grinding since the inauguration.)
For many residents, the sing-alongs have become a balm — an opportunity to connect, unwind and get a little silly.
'There is something beautiful and communal about singing with other people,' Korr said. 'This group of people who are all letting their emotions emerge and mix with yours … it is magical.'
Researchers back that up, finding that group singing can help us make friends and leave us happier.
Kevin Cole has attended nearly every sing-along, accompanying the music on flute. He's attracted, he said, to the pleasures of communal performance: 'I don't like to solo. I like performing with other people.'
Korr grew up attending folk sing-alongs with his parents. In 2012, he started bringing friends together to improvise. By 2020, he was inviting strangers to join his D.C. Sing-Along events. The group went on hiatus due to covid, but started back up in earnest in 2023.
The gatherings initially drew 10 to 20 attendees. Now, 50 people regularly show up and his mailing list includes more than 450 names.
There are no prerequisites for joining one of the meetups, listed on D.C. Sing-Along's website. The sing-alongs are held at rotating locations in the District and Takoma Park.
On that recent Saturday, each attendee was given a kazoo and a handmade songbook that lists Disney songs alongside Robyn's 'Dancing on My Own' and 'Wonderwall' by Oasis.
For each gathering, Korr curates a set list from the songbook. He also serves as the guitar accompanist and emcee, amping up the crowd.
'That invisible structure is key to turning this from an informal loosey-goosey jam where things fizzle out to an actual event,' he said.
On Saturday, Korr asked how everyone was doing and said he knows many Washingtonians feel stressed and worried right now. He didn't push when no one replied.
'It feels,' he told the crowd, 'like you just want to sing.'
In the past, he's woven in a few songs that meet the moment, such as 'Bad Moon Rising' or 'Eye of the Tiger.' This time, he offered up 'This Land Is Your Land,' by Woody Guthrie.
After about an hour, Korr opened the floor to requests. Nikki Goldstone suggested Billy Joel's 'Piano Man.' She'd been practicing the song's harmonica solo for weeks and wanted to try it out for the crowd on this, her birthday weekend.
Goldstone moved to D.C. a few years ago and tried out a few groups before becoming a regular at this one.
'I like that it doesn't feel like people are performing,' she said afterward. 'It feels like we're all singing together.'

BBC Content Chief Latest: Race To Replace Charlotte Moore Nears Final Two, As Zai Bennett Drops Out & New Candidates Emerge
EXCLUSIVE: In around a week's time, the contest to replace BBC content boss Charlotte Moore will become a two-person run-off. Before then, we are told there are around five to six candidates in the mix. Two of those are believed to be frontrunner Kate Phillips and BBC iPlayer and channels boss Dan McGolpin. Another pair are understood to be Nat Geo's Tom McDonald and a new name, David Brindley, the Chief Creative Officer of Destination X producer Twofour. There is thought to be at least one other dark horse candidate, possibly two. The BBC declined to comment. More from Deadline Biden Blasts Trump Over "False" Claims That Aides Ran Country During His Presidency; Current POTUS Admits He Has No Proof For Allegation - Update BBC Condemns Israel After IDF Soldiers Strip-Searched & Detained Journalists At Gunpoint BBC & RTÉ Order Two Seasons Of Aidan Gillen-Starring Comedy Crime Drama 'Tall Tales & Murder' From Chris Addison & Stuart Carolan One person we can reveal is no longer in the running is BBC Studios productions boss Zai Bennett, who becomes the latest to exit from what has been a twisty-turny race to replace BBC content supremo Moore – who has exited to join Sony. Previously deemed a frontrunner, Bennett has always been positioned as a strong candidate but has just got his feet under the table at BBC Studios, initiating a major restructure in the past few weeks and bringing in several new lieutenants. He is the latest big name to exit the race, following the likes of Banijay UK boss Patrick Holland, Netflix's Anne Mensah and Apple TV+ executive Jay Hunt. In around a week to 10 days' time, Deadline understands the remaining candidates will be whittled down to two, at which point they will be grilled in front of an interview panel of senior BBC executives, likely including Director General Tim Davie. Unscripted supremo Phillips remains the one to beat, with BBC insiders and highly-regarded producers pulling for her to get the job. A Netflix-shaped spanner was thrown in the works earlier this week with a report in UK TV trade Broadcast that said she is being wooed by the streamer. Deadline revealed the exit of Netflix unscripted head Ben Kelly several weeks back. Netflix UK is on quite the tear and the Broadcast article dropped on the day the SVoD poached Channel 4's film and TV drama boss Ollie Madden. McGolpin is no less senior than Phillips but Phillips has the programme-making chops and has been acting up in Moore's place over the past few months. McDonald and Brindley are old friends from BBC commissioning, where they successfully ran the specialist factual and factual entertainment departments respectively for several years. The highly-rated McDonald has been touted as a possible Moore replacement since the contest began. He has handy experience working in the States as Disney-owned Nat Geo's EVP Global Factual & Unscripted and has worked with huge stars including David Attenborough and Idris Elba. He is known, however, to have built a life in America and is happy in his current role. Twofour's Brindley is thought to be one of the other contenders. He has been overseeing a successful period for the ITV Studios-owned indie that has included landing the £20M ($27M) contract to make Destination X for the BBC and NBC, new BBC reality franchise I Kissed a Boy/Girl and a historic third series for Apple TV+ doc The Reluctant Traveler. As with McDonald, Brindley is thought to be happy in his current employ. Notably, Phillips, McDonald and Brindley skew heavily unscripted, leaving the feeling that there could still be a big name from the drama world to emerge. Led by search firms Grace Blue and Ibison, the process is moving quickly, with the BBC appearing keen to have a name in place after Moore left the building last week. Moore will become CEO of The Crown producer Left Bank Pictures and creative director of international production at Sony Pictures Television. Stay tuned for more. Big changes coming to Disneyland: ‘Monsters, Inc.' is out; ‘Avatar,' ‘Coco,' ‘Avengers' are in
Say goodbye to Monstropolis and hello to Pandora — Disneyland Resort is shuttering its 'Monsters, Inc.' ride to make way for a new 'Avatar' experience inspired by the oceans of James Cameron's sci-fi world. Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! will close in early 2026 to allow construction to begin on an 'Avatar'-themed land in the Hollywood Backlot area of Disneyland California Resort, Disney announced Thursday. Whereas the 'Avatar'-themed ride at Disney's Animal Kingdom in Florida is based on Cameron's first 'Avatar' film, the new Anaheim experience is shaped around the Pandora of 'Avatar: The Way of Water.' Imagineers first announced the 'Avatar' destination at a fan convention last summer, describing it, in true Disney fashion, as 'dynamic, intense and an emotional experience on a grand scale.' Official details on what the attraction will entail and a timeline for construction remain under wraps. Concept imagery shared on the Disney Parks Blog shows guests aboard a boat traveling through a bioluminescent lagoon and encountering a massive whale-like creature called a Tulkun that leaps from the ocean — hinting at the possibility of a water-based ride. The closure of the 'Monsters, Inc.' ride, which opened in 2006, marks the end of an era for fans of the Pixar classic. The family-friendly ride took guests on a fast-paced journey through the streets of Monstropolis, re-creating scenes from the original 2001 film as guests raced to help monsters Mike and Sulley rescue their human friend Boo. In addition to creating the 'Avatar' experience, the resort is working on a new 'Coco'-themed attraction, two new 'Avengers' attractions and a parking structure. Disney announced Thursday that construction on the 'Coco' adventure was set to begin in the fall. 'The attraction will be filled with the characters — and music! — you know and love from the beloved movie, as you join Miguel on a trip to the land of the dead,' said Disney in a blog post. 'This marks the first-ever 'Coco' ride in a Disney park!' No timeline is available for the construction of the attractions in the Avengers Campus at Disneyland California Adventure. The new parking structure will be built on the east side of Disneyland Resort and provide around 6,000 parking spaces as well as shuttle and rideshare areas. A pedestrian bridge will be added to connect Harbor Boulevard to the transportation hub. 'This is just the beginning of exciting growth here at Disneyland Resort,' Disney said in a blog post. 'We look forward to sharing more about all of these projects in the future.'
