Cakes, deals and more: Back-to-school in UAE turns into celebration
Back-to-school in the UAE has transformed into a celebration, with families marking the season much like a festival. From themed cakes to discounts on meals and even waterpark deals, the days leading up to the first day of school have become an important retail and community moment. Businesses across sectors highlighted that in recent years, the season has gone beyond the traditional purchase of supplies, evolving into an occasion filled with excitement for students, parents, and enterprises alike. Families are now treating it as a fresh start as children return to their schools after a two-month break on August 25, with brands across sectors designing promotions to capture the celebratory mood. Bakers, for instance, say their offerings play a key role in turning the return to classrooms into something special for children. Mandy Chanana, COO Mister Baker said, 'Back-to-school celebrations have definitely shaped our menu and promotions this season. We wanted to capture the excitement of a fresh start and translate it into products that families can enjoy together. "We introduced themed cakes, colourful cupcakes, and cookie packs designed especially for students and families. These playful items are created to spark joy and make the school season memorable. We have seen families come in specifically to mark the start of the school year. Many parents pick up cakes and cookies to surprise their children or to host small gatherings, showing that back-to-school has become a celebration in its own right.' Free dish by presenting report card Even restaurants are joining the movement, encouraging families to dine out and celebrate milestones together. Yash Mulchandani, Director of GCC Operations and New Market Expansion at Kailash Parbat said, 'To make it memorable, we've introduced weekday discounts — 40 per cent off on Mondays, 30 per cent off on Tuesdays, and 20 per cent off on Wednesdays. Adding to the fun, students can enjoy a free Chole Bhature by simply showing their report card — a homely favourite that brings comfort and joy to every table. These offers are our way of making dining out more affordable, fun, and rewarding for families during this exciting season.' He added, 'As a family-first brand for years, we've created something for everyone — kids, parents, and families alike. The 'report card = free Chole Bhature' treat is designed especially for students, while the weekday discounts give families more chances to come together over their favourite dishes. Whether it's a quick bite after school or a family outing, we have made sure every visit feels like a celebration.' Cashing in on the boom Retailers have also positioned themselves as central to this shift, with wide-ranging offers on everything from stationery to healthy snacks. Kamal Vachani, Deputy CEO, Group Director and partner Almaya group said, 'We have carefully designed our back-to-school promotions to ease the preparations for families while making the shopping experience enjoyable. This year, we are running exclusive offers across a wide range of categories, including school supplies, stationery, backpacks, lunch boxes, and healthy food products. Our campaigns focus on offering convenience and variety under one roof, helping parents save time while giving children a sense of excitement as they prepare for the new academic year.' Tech-driven platforms are also tapping into the season. Careem is offering 'five minute delivery and up to 50 per cent off school and home essentials (backpacks, stationery, pantry items, etc.) and electronics (Samsung Tablets, MacBooks, iPads, etc). Dh 600 off for 3-month car rentals.' The company is also enabling direct international transfers to UK educational institutions via Careem Pay, supporting families with children studying abroad. Leisure destinations are ensuring families can enjoy one final outing before school routines begin. Over at Wild Wadi Waterpark, a press statement said, 'Families can dive into one last splash-fest before school starts from 16 to 31 August, kids under 8 go free.' Meanwhile, hospitals are also tailoring packages to align with the back-to-school mood, focusing on children's health as part of academic readiness. Saudi German Hospital in a statement to KT said, 'Getting children ready for a successful academic year starts with their health. Saudi German Hospitals in Sharjah and Ajman offer a comprehensive Back-to-School Package for only AED 299. The package offers parents peace of mind with vital checks including Vitamin D, Iron, CBC. CIRA Education expands to the Red Sea region with strategic stake in L'École Française d'Hurghada
Cairo : CIRA Education ('CIRA' or the 'Group', on the Egyptian Stock Exchange), the largest fully integrated education service provider in the Egyptian private sector, is pleased to announce its acquisition of a 51% stake in L'École Française d'Hurghada, expanding the Group's footprint the Red Sea region and marking its first entry into the region's international education sector. The remaining 49% of the school will continue to be held by its founder and current shareholder, Ms. Bouchra Cherkaoui, who will continue to play an active role in the school's future development. Founded in 2004, L'École Française d'Hurghada stands as the sole institution in the Red Sea region offering French curriculum education under the official accreditation and oversight of the Agency for French Education Abroad (AEFE). With this strategic investment, CIRA is expanding both its geographic footprint and its curricular offerings to serve a wider spectrum of students in Hurghada. Beginning in September, the school will introduce a new German section under the SIS brand, marking the first dedicated German-curriculum offering in Hurghada. The new track has already confirmed enrollment for 160 students spanning kindergarten through Grade 12. This initiative will offer a German education pathway within the existing French school, providing families with increased access to multilingual education. Plans are already in motion to introduce an American English stream in the near future, an addition that reflects both CIRA's multi-curricular model and the growing demand for international education in Hurghada. CIRA Education's CEO Mr. Mohamed El Kalla said: "At CIRA, we're committed to delivering quality education where it's needed most, and Hurghada represents an exciting, underserved geography for us. By introducing German and American tracks alongside the existing French program, we're creating a richer, more inclusive academic environment for families in the region. We will continue to focus on unlocking opportunities in underserved markets, while introducing innovative academic models that enrich and diversify the learning experience.' ' For more than two decades, we've been proud to offer a high-quality French education to families in Hurghada,' added Founder of L'École Française d'Hurghada, Ms. Bouchra Cherkaoui. 'Joining forces with CIRA allows us to scale our impact while preserving the core values the school was built on. With this new chapter, the school is set to broaden both its vision and its offering and I'm excited to continue this journey together and see the school evolve into a truly multi-curricular institution.' Khaled Taha, Vice President SIS Middle East, commented: 'We are proud to bring German education to Hurghada through the SIS model, offering students a fully accredited and globally respected curriculum for the first time in the city. This launch is not only a milestone for SIS but also a meaningful step forward for educational diversity in the Red Sea region. We look forward to working closely with the school community to deliver an exceptional German academic experience.' 'SIS Red Sea is our eighth school in the Eduhive network — and perhaps the most exciting,' said Karim Mostafa, CEO of Eduhive, a management subsidiary backed by CIRA Education. 'We have had the opportunity to operate an international school in the Red Sea region nearly a decade ago, and we are excited to return with a renewed vision. Our goal is to make SIS Red Sea the leading international school in the entire Red Sea area. Backed by extensive market knowledge and a strong team of dedicated educators, we are confident that our presence will have a positive and lasting impact on the region in a very short time'. The signing ceremony for the acquisition took place at CIRA Education's headquarters last Thursday, marking the beginning of a new chapter for both organizations. South Africa: KwaZulu-Natal Education embarks on employee verification programme
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education will be embarking on a rigorous employee verification process to ensure that the correct number of employees are legitimately receiving remuneration through the Department's persal systems. This process has been necessitated by instances where delays in the administrative termination of employees—due to retirement, resignation, or death—have resulted in continued salary payments long after the individuals have exited the Department. Upon identifying these discrepancies, the Department engaged the Provincial Treasury to assist with the necessary IT infrastructure to facilitate this large-scale verification exercise and to ensure the quality and integrity of the process. The initiative, initially launched by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education, has since been adopted as a national programme by the National Department of Basic Education. It will be implemented across the country under the leadership of the Education Labour Relations Council (ELRC), commencing with KwaZulu-Natal. The Department welcomes the support of the National Department of Basic Education, as this approach will help standardize processes across the education sector. The outcomes of the verification will guide future policy decisions and preventative measures. 'We are confident that the verification process will enhance transparency, accountability, and good governance,' said the MEC for Education, Mr. Sipho Hlomuka. He also called for the full cooperation of all Department employees to ensure the success of the initiative. Details of the verification process will be communicated in due course.
