The New England Patriots are making it clear that Drake Maye is not being asked to single-handedly return the franchise to its former glory. The Patriots have gone to work building a much-improved roster around their second-year quarterback.

According to Bernd Buchmasser of Pats Pulpit, Patriots senior personnel executive Alonzo Highsmith emphasized realistic expectations during an interview with Fanatics Sports.
"I don't think anyone's expecting Drake Maye to put this franchise on his back,' Highsmith said. 'Everybody's going to do their part to help Drake Maye.'
That organizational philosophy has been clear all offseason. New England bolstered the offensive line by drafting left tackle Will Campbell and adding veteran right tackle Morgan Moses to protect Maye.

They also added skill position players like running back TreVeyon Henderson and wide receiver Kyle Williams through the draft, and all-pro Stefon Diggs in free agency. That does not even include key players like Milton Williams or Carlton Davis III on defense who should take some burden off the offense.

'He's a young guy, still developing. And it's our job — everyone's job; teammates, everybody around him — to help him," Highsmith said. "He doesn't have to do it alone... We're building a team that can grow with him.'
The Patriots were not emphasizing this strategy as clearly last year under Jerod Mayo. It is possible first-year Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel understands that having a new and explicit message like this could pay dividends to the development of his team and his franchise quarterback.

Almost to the point of breaking his own rules to appease their fragile egos. The best example was during Steelers training camp, when the bulk of the team was staying in dorms at Saint Vincent College, former wide receiver Antonio Brown rented a huge home near campus and even brought his private chef. Tomlin preaches that the standard is the standard but historically hasn't held his own players to it and this is why this team finds itself on the wrong end of the playoffs for nearly a decade.

Barkley became the ninth player in NFL history to rush for over 2,000 yards last year. He was rewarded with the AP Offensive Player of the Year award and a Super Bowl LIX championship with the Philadelphia Eagles. Advertisement Now, Barkley is trying to do something few running backs have done before: build off that 2,000-yard season with another dominant year. Of the eight previous players who have rushed for over 2,000 yards, each suffered a significant decline in production the following year. Many of those backs even struggled to return to that elite level of play later in their careers. Since the turn of the century, four running backs outside Barkley recorded over 2,000 yards in a year. Only one has recorded over 1,500 yards in any year afterward. Derrick Henry, the former All-Pro and Offensive Player of the Year, recorded over 1,500 yards two years after his historic season. Just last year, Henry got the closest any running back has ever been to recording a second 2,000-yard season. Advertisement The 31-year-old ran for 1,921 in his first year with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024. Henry's ability to accomplish that feat is remarkable, all things considered. Few running backs over 30 are given a shot to compete in the NFL anymore. It's a good reminder of what Barkley could do for the Eagles. Like Henry, Barkley has battled some injuries through the years. Unlike Henry, Philadelphia's All-Pro is running behind the best offensive line in football. That is a huge difference that can help prolong Barkley's career. It's unlikely that Barkley will be able to record another 2,000-yard season in 2025.
