Why is Threads recommending these weird spammy posts from people looking for 'friends'?

Engadget09-05-2025

Threads users have long joked about the sometimes bizarre posts served up by its recommendation algorithm since the early days of the app. Lately though, some users are starting to notice another type of strange post appear in their suggestions: posts from random people looking for "friends."
The posts often feature selfies of young people whose profiles claim to be 18. Engadget has observed numerous such posts appearing in Threads' "related threads" feature that surfaces recommended content to logged-out users. It's not clear why these posts are appearing as "related" to other popular recommended posts.
For example, this post about Spotify from popular Threads user Chris Messina was suggested on Threads' home feed to logged out users. Clicking into the post surfaced a "related" post from Threads head Adam Mosseri. Underneath that post, however, was another "related" post from an account claiming to be an 18-year-old girl in 11th grade.
For whatever reason, Threads seems to be surfacing many other such posts in its "related threads" feature. For example, the following post was also recommended as a "related" post elsewhere in the app. A look at this user's profile shows that they have posted the same thing — a photo followed by a WhatsApp link — more than 30 times in the last five days.
And here's what Engadget's editor-in-chief Aaron Souppouris was recently recommended as a "related" thread" underneath one of my own posts while logged out.
As Threads has grown to more than 350 million users, it's not surprising that the platform would see an influx of spam. Meta exec Mosseri said the company had seen an increase in "spam attacks" in July of 2023, not long after the service launched. Last year, the company said it was working to get engagement bait under control.
But while the mere presence of spam on a platform the size of Threads isn't unexpected, it's bizarre that the app is recommending these posts so frequently. Meta didn't respond to specific questions about these posts or why they are being featured as "related" content, but confirmed that spammy posts shouldn't be featured as recommended content in the app.
Notably, spammy posts seem to be appearing as recommendations in other parts of Meta's apps too. One Reddit user recently noticed a strange post that appeared as a recommendation on Instagram. This post featured a selfie of a woman with the words "I need a bf 🎀 Age don't mind." A quick look at that user's profile shows they've posted dozens of times with that same caption over the last week. 'Literally every time the suggested Threads window shows up, I have to scroll through 2-4 posts like this before seeing something normal," the Redditor wrote . "I press 'not interested' and report every one I see, but they still keep showing up."
The post seems to be related to some kind of ongoing spam campaign. The exact same selfie and text flagged by the Redditor was shared by at least one other Threads account. And searches on Threads show numerous other accounts are almost constantly sharing posts saying "age doesn't matter" or "don't mind age."

Nothing Phone 3 says goodbye to Glyph Interface, hello to Glyph Matrix

TL;DR Nothing teases its upcoming Phone 3 with a new design element called 'Glyph Matrix.' The teaser suggests dot matrix-style lighting on the back of the device, potentially for more intricate light patterns. Previously leaked renders of the Phone 3 do not align with the newly teased Glyph Matrix design. In typical Carl Pei fashion, the Nothing Phone 3 hype train is at full speed. We've just about recovered from the heartbreak after learning about the Phone 3's Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, and the company is now back with another teaser. This time, it's teasing the Phone 3's Glyph Matrix. There's very little to see here since it's just a teaser, not a full reveal. The Phone 3's back will seemingly sport the new Glyph Matrix lights in the top right corner. This appears to be an evolution of the company's signature Glyph Interface, which the company has said is dead. Nothing has also changed the profile photo of its social media handles to this particular logo, and now we understand that it's part of the Glyph Matrix design: Notably, this Glyph Matrix does not align with the alleged Phone 3 renders, as there is no such LED setup on the back of the leaked device. Eagle-eyed enthusiasts had pointed out that the alleged Phone 3 renders looked a lot like Phone 3a prototypes, and it's looking increasingly likely that that's the case. If we can speculate, we could see a dot matrix-style LED setup on the back of the Nothing Phone 3, allowing users to create more intricate patterns than they could with the Glyph Interface on previous Nothing flagships. It would be cool if users could map notifications to this Glyph Matrix. For instance, showing off a dot matrix-style WhatsApp logo every time you get a WhatsApp message would be pretty neat. We now wait for Nothing to share more information about the Phone 3. Got a tip? Talk to us! Email our staff at Email our staff at news@ . Jetpac Writes a New Chapter for Travel eSIMs—with Industry-First Offerings

Jetpac reshapes how travelers stay connected—offering unmatched coverage through dual networks, and keeping WhatsApp and Google Maps working even when your data runs out. New York, United States, June 19, 2025 -- For too long, travel connectivity has been stuck in the past—driven by telco legacy, filled with fine print, patchy coverage, and apps that fail at the moments they're needed most. Jetpac is here to change that. Jetpac is transforming the core travel eSIM experience from the ground up. This is a complete rethink of what travel connectivity should feel like today: seamless, intuitive, and designed for the unpredictable moments that define real journeys. 'We're not just adding functionality—we're reimagining the experience,' said Aditya Goyal, CEO at Jetpac. 'We're transforming the travel eSIM experience. Jetpac now offers unmatched reliability and convenience — free essential apps (WhatsApp, Google Maps, Uber), and dual networks in most places —so travelers stay connected every time, everywhere!' In an industry that's become increasingly commoditized, most travel eSIM providers are locked in a race to the bottom—competing on price points, data bundles, and minor plan tweaks. Brands like Saily, Holafly, and Airalo may offer competitive deals, but they still operate within a framework that hasn't evolved: one built around telecom economics, not human needs. Jetpac is moving in the opposite direction. One focused on design, empathy, and support over data bundles and gimmicks, signaling a pivotal shift in the global mobility category.. A Human-Centered eSIM, Not Just a Data Package Jetpac's updated core offering is intentionally simple, yet deeply thoughtful. Two key shifts define this launch: Instead of asking travelers to upgrade to a bigger plan, Jetpac is upgrading the experience itself. 'Legacy roaming was designed around telecom convenience. Jetpac is designed around real human needs,' said Pearlyn Yeo, Head of Marketing at Jetpac. 'In today's always-on world, the answer isn't always a bigger plan—it's a better customer experience.' Rewiring Expectations—Designing for What Travelers Actually Need Jetpac's transformation is not just about offering more—it's about offering what matters when it matters. While most travel eSIMs still treat connectivity as a check in the box, Jetpac treats it as an opportunity to enhance the travel experience for the customer. This is the first eSIM experience to embed a safety net at its core—from Google Maps and WhatsApp access when data runs out, to dual-network switching when signal drops. Jetpac anticipates problems before travelers even notice them. Whether traveling for the first time or the fiftieth, Jetpac ensures travelers are not just connected, they're covered. Jetpac's Full Suite: A Travel Experience, Not Just a SIM The newly transformed Jetpac core integrates with its already traveler-loved suite of benefits, making it one of the most complete eSIM experiences available: Together, these features go beyond specs and data—they offer emotional security, practical simplicity, and confidence when travelers need it most. Jetpac is made to support every kind of traveler—by removing uncertainty and replacing it with confidence, clarity, and ease. About the company: Powered by Circles, Jetpac was launched in 2022 as a premium travel eSIM service provider geared to redefine the way travelers roam. Jetpac's travel tech platform instantly connects travelers globally to reliable roaming in 200+ destinations through the simple activation of 1 eSIM. Jetpac is focused on delivering a hyper-convenient way for customers to roam, providing them with data freedom and a bill-shock-free travel experience. More than a travel eSIM, Jetpac also provides value-added innovative services that go beyond traditional data connectivity, making it the ideal travel partner for all. 2 Dividend Stocks Growth-Oriented Investors Will Love

Meta Platforms and Booking Holdings started paying dividends last year. Both are top players in their industries and have tremendous growth prospects. 10 stocks we like better than Meta Platforms › Growth and income investing may be two distinct styles, but it's possible to combine them by selecting the right stocks. Some corporations have excellent growth prospects and also offer dividend programs that seem at least somewhat reliable. Two examples in that department are Meta Platforms (NASDAQ: META) and Booking Holdings (NASDAQ: BKNG). Although they are new dividend payers, these market leaders' strong underlying businesses mean they should reward shareholders with consistent dividends for a long time while also capitalizing on significant growth opportunities. Let me explain. Meta Platforms is the leading social media company. It boasts 3.43 billion daily active users across its websites and apps -- that's pretty close to half of the 8 billion people on Earth, a total that includes many who are too young to be on any of the company's platforms. Meta's deep ecosystem makes it an excellent target for advertisers. That's how it generates most of its sales, and that business is still booming. In the first quarter, Meta Platforms' revenue increased by 16% year over year to $42.3 billion. The tech leader's earnings per share (EPS) came in at $6.43, 37% higher than the year-ago period. Here's the good news for investors: Meta Platforms' business is getting even better thanks to artificial intelligence (AI). The company has used AI-powered algorithms to increase engagement on its apps. That means more time spent on Facebook and Instagram, which naturally leads to greater demand for ads and higher revenue. Meta Platforms is also utilizing AI to enhance the ad launch process. Management aims to fully automate this system by the end of 2026. These initiatives could have a significantly positive impact on Meta Platforms' performance in the long run. That's why the company is doubling down with massive investments in AI infrastructure, to the tune of $65 billion this year, according to some reports. The company also has other growth opportunities, including business messaging on WhatsApp. Although economic and trade concerns could continue to impact the stock -- Meta lost some ad revenue from Asia-based retailers in the first quarter -- the company should still deliver strong results thanks to the lucrative opportunities at its disposal. Lastly, Meta Platforms initiated a quarterly dividend last year. The company offers a quarterly dividend of approximately $0.52 per share. Meta's payouts look safe, and although it doesn't have a substantial dividend history yet, investors can benefit from the growth and income it will provide in the next five years and beyond. Booking Holdings helps travelers plan for their trips by providing everything from flights to accommodations, car rentals, and activities. The company operates an ecosystem of websites that includes its namesake, Priceline, as well as Kayak and others. Booking Holdings' famous brands and ecosystem grant it a network effect. The more people join one of its platforms, the more attractive it is for hotels or car rental companies, and vice versa. That's why Booking Holdings remains one of the undisputed leaders in this niche. Financial results remain robust, too. In the first quarter, the company's revenue increased by 8% year over year to $4.8 billion. While that's not too impressive, Booking Holdings' adjusted EPS was up by a juicier 22% year over year to $24.81, while its free cash flow jumped to $3.2 billion, 23% higher than the year-ago period. Booking Holdings' business could also be impacted by tariffs, particularly if they lead to economic issues, a decline in consumer spending, and lower travel demand. People are less likely to splurge on expensive vacations if the economy is rough. That's nothing new for Booking Holdings, though. Even if it faces some near-term uncertainty due to the state of the economy, the company's prospects are intact. The travel and accommodation industries should maintain an upward trajectory, in the long run, thanks to factors like an increasing worldwide population and gross domestic product growth. Meanwhile, Booking Holdings is also leveraging the power of AI to enhance its business. It introduced an AI-powered travel planning tool and plans to implement many more initiatives that could make its platform even more attractive. That's an excellent sign for the future. Booking Holdings began paying dividends last year, with an initial quarterly dividend of $8.75 per share, which has since increased to $9.60. Booking Holdings' shares aren't cheap -- they are trading for just under $5,400 apiece. Thankfully, most online brokers now offer fractional shares. Booking Holdings is worth the money for growth investors who also want some dividends on the side.
