Chennai Metro to set up real-time info boards at airport, railway stations, and malls to aid commuters
From railway stations and shopping malls to the airport, Chennai Metro Rail plans to install digital display boards that will show the route map of the 54-km phase I and phase I extension network, fare details, the distance to the nearest station, and real-time train updates. The idea is that such displays, when installed at key transportation hubs, will facilitate multi-modal integration.
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has floated bids for the project, which is expected to be implemented soon. According to the bid documents, the digital display boards will be installed at the domestic and international arrival and departure halls of Chennai airport, Chennai Central and Egmore railway stations, IT parks, shopping malls, and educational institutions. A few display boards will also be positioned at strategic points within these locations. The objective is to encourage more people to use the metro.
Devaraj, a resident of Tambaram, said it would help if the train timings of Southern Railway's long-distance trains were also displayed inside the ticketing areas of Chennai Metro Rail stations. 'Travellers to the city will benefit from this facility. Newcomers may not know where the metro or suburban stations are, and this could help them opt for public transport instead of spending on cabs or autos,' he noted.

After a year of boring, Chennai Metro tunnel linking Royapettah and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai to be completed this month
After a year of boring the earth, Chennai Metro Rail will complete creating an underground network between Royapettah and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai by the end of this month for its phase II project. One of the three corridors of the 118.9-km project, corridor 3 stretches from Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Royapettah and Mylapore, and its length is 45.8 km. Since the stretch from Madhavaram to Taramani is an underground network, tunnel boring machines are engaged at several locations to drill the earth and link them. Tunnelling is carried out in short stretches based on the location of the station, its geology, as well as proximity to the next station. In July last year, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) named after the river 'Bhavani' took off from the Royapettah station to build a tunnel till Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, covering a length of 966 metres. According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the machine is very close to Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station and will make a breakthrough by the end of this month. Though officials initially expected that there would be weathered rock and clay along this stretch and that tunnelling could be tough, it turned out to be easy. 'This was a fairly smooth stretch with no geological challenges. It was mostly sand and silt. The machine did not face any hiccups. The TBM bored mostly under the Royapettah High Road. But we were careful when it was drilled under the Government Royapettah Hospital,' an official said. The next TBM named after 'Adyar' river will complete its tunnelling work by October, officials said. While Royapettah station is located close to the YMCA, Government Royapettah Hospital, and a huge mall, near Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station, there are quite a few hotels and office establishments. When the stretch is ready for train operations, it could be beneficial for thousands of commuters. Also, since corridor 3 links north and southern areas, many can seamlessly travel from one end to the other.

Vaigai, the Express which saw many firsts, turns 48
1 2 Madurai: Madurai railway division's flagship train, Vaigai Express, completed 48 years of service on Friday. Rail enthusiasts marked the milestone by cutting a cake alongside retired loco pilots who once helmed it. Introduced on Aug 15, 1977, between Madurai and Chennai, the train holds a special place in Indian Railways ' history as the country's first metre-gauge train to run at 100 kmph. It was also the first train to have a pantry car in metre gauge, which until then was exclusive to overnight trains. In 1979, it began running with YDM-4A (Metre gauge - Diesel - Mixed traffic) locomotives. It introduced the first 42-seat air-conditioned coach in a metre-gauge train in 1994, and in 1995, ran with a YAM-1 (Metre gauge Alternating current Mixed traffic) electric engine between Chennai and Villupuram. Converted to broad gauge in 1997, Vaigai Express initially ran with 16 coaches, which expanded to 24 in 2006. Electrification between Chennai and Trichy was completed in 2008 and extended to Madurai in 2014. In 2018, with the commissioning of double lines between Madurai and Chennai, journey time was reduced to 7 hours 35 minutes from 7 hours 55 minutes. Rail enthusiast Arun Pandian said Vaigai Express has been a pioneer in multiple aspects of Indian Railways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Benefits of Trading Bitcoin CFDs IC Markets Learn More Undo "Whenever new features are introduced, Vaigai is often among the first to get them, like the introduction of tube lights in the coaches," he said, adding that further travel time reductions are possible through coordinated operational efforts. Recalling his 11 years driving the train, retired loco pilot Deva Raj, 82, said, "I still remember the 1996 floods that washed away tracks near Villupuram, forcing us to halt for two days. Apart from that, it was all sweet memories." Some enthusiasts believe the train's journey time could be cut further to about six-and-a-half hours by raising its top speed. Friday's anniversary programme ended on a nostalgic note, with rail fans sharing stories, posing with memorabilia, and clicking photos beside the cake-cutting toasts. Around 50 enthusiasts even made a same-day trip to Chennai on the train before returning to Madurai to join the celebrations.
