After a year of boring the earth, Chennai Metro Rail will complete creating an underground network between Royapettah and Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai by the end of this month for its phase II project.
One of the three corridors of the 118.9-km project, corridor 3 stretches from Madhavaram to SIPCOT via Royapettah and Mylapore, and its length is 45.8 km. Since the stretch from Madhavaram to Taramani is an underground network, tunnel boring machines are engaged at several locations to drill the earth and link them. Tunnelling is carried out in short stretches based on the location of the station, its geology, as well as proximity to the next station.
In July last year, the tunnel boring machine (TBM) named after the river 'Bhavani' took off from the Royapettah station to build a tunnel till Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, covering a length of 966 metres.
According to officials of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), the machine is very close to Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station and will make a breakthrough by the end of this month. Though officials initially expected that there would be weathered rock and clay along this stretch and that tunnelling could be tough, it turned out to be easy.
'This was a fairly smooth stretch with no geological challenges. It was mostly sand and silt. The machine did not face any hiccups. The TBM bored mostly under the Royapettah High Road. But we were careful when it was drilled under the Government Royapettah Hospital,' an official said. The next TBM named after 'Adyar' river will complete its tunnelling work by October, officials said.
While Royapettah station is located close to the YMCA, Government Royapettah Hospital, and a huge mall, near Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai station, there are quite a few hotels and office establishments. When the stretch is ready for train operations, it could be beneficial for thousands of commuters. Also, since corridor 3 links north and southern areas, many can seamlessly travel from one end to the other.

DPR work to begin soon for two key corridors of Chennai Metro Rail

Chennai Metro Rail Project: The preparation of the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for two major Chennai Metro Rail corridors will commence soon. Earlier this month, Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) awarded consultancy contracts for the DPR of the Corridor 4 extension from Lighthouse to High Court and the proposed Tambaram–Guindy–Velachery corridor. The DPRs will assess alignment options, ridership potential, multimodal integration, and technical feasibility, forming the basis for informed decision-making and future project implementation. This proposed extension of approximately 7 km is planned to enhance metro connectivity along Marina beach and also to secretariat. The corridor will improve access for both daily commuters and tourists, supporting urban mobility. This corridor of approximately 21 km aims to integrate the suburbs of Tambaram, Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Velachery with Guindy Metro station in the corridor 1 of CMRL. This corridor will facilitate multimodal integration at Tambaram, Medavakkam, Velachery and Guindy. '…appointed M/s Systra MVA Consulting India Pvt Ltd as the Consultant for both assignments for a value of INR 38,20,000/- and INR 96,19,000/- respectively and the study duration is 120 days,' the CMRL said in a statement. Earlier this month, the CMRL formed a collaboration with Uber for ticketing service through the Uber App with Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) Network. Now, Uber users in Chennai can plan their metro journeys, purchase QR-based tickets, and access real-time transit information – all within the Uber app. For the first time, the CMRL has registered more than One Crore passengers in July, 2025. According to the official release, a total of 1,03,78,835 passengers have travelled in the Metro trains from July 1 to July 31. On July 4, 2025 the CMRL recorded the highest passenger flow per day with 3,74,948 passengers.
