BMW gives a glimpse of its next-generation superbike
The German company's Motorrad motorcycle division describes the BMW Motorrad Concept RR as the ultimate performance statement in technology and design for the future generation of BMW RR models.
The Concept RR is inspired by the M 1000 RR machine with which Toprak Razgatlioğlu won the 2024 FIM World Superbike Championship.
'The BMW Motorrad Concept RR is a true masterpiece of our development team, technically and in design language,' said Markus Flasch, head of BMW Motorrad.
The Concept RR is powered by the in-line four-cylinder engine of the world champion machine, which delivers more than 169kW.
The power is harnessed by electronic control systems that come directly from the BMW M 1000 RR, including the engine management, traction control and engine brake.
Using hi-tech materials such as carbon and aluminium, the Motorrad Concept RR sets new benchmarks in lightweight construction. From the frame to the smallest component, every detail is consistently optimised for lightweight construction and performance, said BMW.
It described the bike's design as 'sharp, purposeful and expressive' with an embossed RR logo on the tail and an illuminated RR symbol on the downside of the aluminium tail.
Special emphasis was placed on aerodynamics, particularly on the challenging objectives of riding stability at high speeds, maximum cornering speeds and minimal air resistance for optimal top speed.
These competing goals are realised by the Concept RR through an unprecedented compact package, reduced external attachments and enhanced precision of airflow. The concept bike is also equipped with an aerodynamically optimised fairing with integrated winglets and high-performance brakes.
BMW didn't reveal a launch date for its next-generation superbike but it's unlikely to be before 2027 as the S 1000 RR and M 1000 RR were updated this year.
The BMW S 1000 RR was launched in 2009 as a race-orientated sport bike. BMW initially built a limited number of units to satisfy World Superbike homologation requirements but later expanded production for commercial sale of the bike.
The higher-spec M 1000 RR — the first BMW motorcycle to carry the 'M' prefix normally reserved for the brand's high-performance cars — was launched in 2020 with extensive engine, aero and chassis upgrades.

Private sector stepping up to help metro safeguard electricity infrastructure
MMC for Utilities Frans Boshielo has made an urgent appeal to all residents to assist the municipality in protecting electricity infrastructure across the metro. Boshielo emphasised that a growing number of private companies are already stepping in to support this effort, including car manufacturer BMW in Rosslyn. BMW has partnered with the municipality to secure the electricity infrastructure in Rosslyn by installing cameras and motion detectors. 'The safeguarding of infrastructure is not just the municipality's job; it's everyone's responsibility. 'We are grateful for companies like BMW and others that are already supporting these efforts,' he said. One such success story can be found in Pretoria North, where the Van Riebeeck Substation has been fitted with a cutting-edge alarm system to combat cable theft, vandalism and repeated power outages. The substation has been targeted multiple times. These incidents often leave residents in the dark for days and cause major losses to local businesses and homeowners. Boshielo said the municipality has thus far received a lot of donations from people in private society and business, who are keen to safeguard the infrastructure in their vicinities to ensure there is no vandalism. 'We are encouraging businesspeople to come forward this way. This is their infrastructure. We need to work together. We have got what we call the Community Upliftment Programme (CUP), where other stakeholders are coming forward to assist.' Boshielo said the process of wanting to play a role in safeguarding the infrastructure is simple: write a letter to the municipality, and you will receive communication. 'The letter must also include the nature of assistance that businesses and residents want to provide to the metro. 'I can confirm that the metro did receive a donation for the Van Riebeeck substation. Prospective donors came forward and said they want to help us. Such donations and partnerships are assisting us a lot because we are losing a lot more due to cable theft,' said Boshielo. Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said cable theft has caused major damage and outages, but with the newly alarmed substation, criminals no longer have a place to steal. Karen Yssel, a business owner who was instrumental in pushing the project forward, said she was spurred into action after hearing about the break-ins at the substation. 'I decided to help Maximum Security get the necessary authorisation from the municipality to install the alarm system,' she said. 'It was a proactive step that could save the metro millions in infrastructure damage.' The system at the Van Riebeeck substation includes a wireless security system with door sensors, passive infrared sensors, and outdoor perimeter beams, monitored by a 24/7 control room. BMW M5 Touring pricing announced: the ultimate station wagon for driving thrills

Image: Supplied Following the success of the BMW M3 Touring, with South Africa's full allocation taken up when it was introduced last year, BMW South Africa has announced the pricing for the M5 Touring. Unlike Europe, South Africans aren't big on station wagons or estates as they're called, but give us a fire-breathing performance version and we can't get enough of them. Pricing BMW has priced it R30 000 above its M5 sedan sibling at R2,795,000. Currently, the M3 Touring costs R2,218,506. Fortunately, the BMW M5 Touring is not a limited model for our market. Image: Supplied Power It uses the same M Hybrid oily bits as the M5 sedan, with a twin turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 430kW and 750Nm and an electric motor with 145kW and 280Nm, with a pre-gearing stage that allows effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450Nm, so the net result is you get 535kW and 1 000Nm. BMW says the electric system provides an all-electric range up to 70 kilometres (WLTP). It has a 0-100km/h time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 250km/h, although standard in South Africa with the M Driver's Package, it will get to a rather brisk 305km/h. Performance bits Other performance highlights include M Drive Professional, which features Boost Control, M Laptimer and Track View, and the M sport exhaust system. The Touring derivative rolls on M5-specific front 20-inch and rear 21-inch rims and tyres. Thanks to its estate design, boot space is rated at 500 litres and with the seats folded down, 1,630 litres. Ten exterior colours, including the M5 range's exclusive Isle of Man Green and Marina Bay Blue, and Storm Bay and Frozen Deep Grey from the BMW Individual palette, are offered. The cabin receives six upholstery possibilities and the option of either M Carbon Fibre or BMW Individual Fineline Dark Oak interior trims. The R2,795,000 price tag includes a two-year/unlimited kilometre warranty, an eight-year/100,000km battery pack warranty and a five-year/100,000km maintenance plan.

New study shows how much time drivers lose to car admin
New research from the UK suggests drivers spend hundreds of hours managing their cars, from booking services to worrying about warning lights. Commissioned by BMW and based on a survey of 2,000 motorists, the study estimates people lose up to 565 hours over their lifetimes to car-related admin. That's about a day each year spent thinking about maintenance, inspections or mechanical issues. The effect isn't just logistical. About 63% of respondents said car trouble has forced them to miss important events. On average, drivers have to change their plans four times a year due to unexpected vehicle problems. Many still manage things the old-fashioned way: 52% use diaries or calendars to track service intervals while a third wait for a dashboard warning before acting. Nearly four in 10 admitted putting off garage visits altogether. BMW commissioned the research to highlight its proactive care technology, which is available on all BMWs in the UK less than 10 years old. It monitors the car's condition in real time, flags issues early and offers support after incidents — all aimed at helping drivers avoid disruptions. Asked how they'd prefer to use the time they lose to car admin, a third of drivers said they'd read more, another third would prioritise exercise and many just wanted a proper break with holidays topping the list for stress relief.
