Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a reduction in goods and services tax (GST) rates on essential items ahead of Diwali, even as revenue growth under the eight-year-old regime has slowed to its weakest level. The move appears designed to trigger a Laffer curve–type response: Though the principle is rooted in direct taxation, the extension to GST suggests that lower rates could stimulate consumption and curb evasion. The Laffer curve posits that both excessively high and excessively low tax rates are suboptimal for revenue generation.

Kota, Bundi celebrate Union govt's approval to new Greenfield Airport

Kota: Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla Tuesday thanked PM Narendra Modi for the cabinet nod to Greenfield Airport coming up close to Kota and Bundi. Birla wrote on X, "This airport will give new impetus to the connectivity not only of the entire Hadauti region (Kota-Bundi) but also of Rajasthan and North India. This will open up countless opportunities for tourism, trade, investment and employment. This will make the state a new hub of air traffic and economic activities." Local Congress MLA Harimohan Sharma expressed appreciation for the inclusion of Bundi name in the airport — missing in the original MoA — in keeping with the public sentiment. Sharma said the previous state Congress govt's commitment to providing 440.06 hectares of land to the Airport Authority of India, aligning with party leader Rahul Gandhi's vision. Naveen Maheshwari, director of Allen Career Institute, emphasized the airport's significance for Kota's coaching industry, which has faced challenges due to limited air connectivity. He believes the new airport will boost both the coaching and tourism sectors, adding a new attraction to the city. Vijay Paliwal, a mechanical engineer and industrialist, expressed that the airport should have been operational years ago, especially as the coaching industry now faces a downturn. Paliwal, along with supporters, had initiated the 'Kota Airport Sangarh Samiti' in 2016, advocating for the airport through online petitions. Kota district BJP president Rakesh Jain, along with party workers, celebrated the project's approval with festivities, extending gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Jain highlighted that the airport's stone-laying ceremony is anticipated soon, with the tender process already underway. He expressed hope that the prime minister and Lok Sabha speaker will inaugurate the airport during the current govt term. Remove GST on handloom, insurance: KT Rama Rao to Centre

Hyderabad: BRS working president KT Rama Rao has demanded that the Centre completely remove goods and services tax (GST) on handloom products and on all life and health insurance policies. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Along with these, GST should be abolished on all education-related fee, cancer medicines, and life-saving drugs that are critical for survival. He also called for a reduction of taxes and the complete removal of cesses on petrol, diesel, and LPG. He said the practice of collecting cesses instead of taxes was a deliberate strategy to bypass revenue sharing with states. "This is not just unjust — it is undemocratic," KTR added. The BRS working president wrote a letter to the Centre ahead of the upcoming GST council meeting, criticising the Modi-led administration for what he called "headline management through hollow announcements" instead of addressing core economic issues faced by ordinary Indians. In particular, KTR slammed the Centre's recent media campaign around the removal or revision of the 12% GST slab, calling it a diversionary tactic meant to overshadow the crippling burden imposed by fuel prices and unjust taxation policies over the last decade. He said the Centre was aggressively promoting the idea that removing the 12% GST slab would bring a 'real Diwali' to the people. But for a govt that consistently raised petrol, diesel, and LPG prices — collecting lakhs of crores from the public — "this is nothing more than propaganda", KTR said. Reiterating the long-standing BRS demand, KTR asked the Centre for complete removal of GST on handloom products, asserting that the handloom sector was not just an economic contributor but also a custodian of India's cultural heritage.

Final nod for ₹62,000 crore deal to procure 97 more Tejas Mk1A jets

The government on Tuesday cleared the Rs 62,000 crore order to procure 97 additional indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas Mk1A fighter jets from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for the Indian Air Force (IAF), a defence source confirmed. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS), chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given its final approval — marking the last step before the formal signing of the deal. The jets will be built by Bengaluru-headquartered HAL, a Maharatna public sector undertaking under the Ministry of Defence. This will mark the second order for the Mk1A fighter jets, with an earlier contract already placed with HAL for 83 aircraft at a cost of Rs 36,400 crore. HAL missed the original February 2024 deadline to start deliveries of the LCA Mk1A, primarily due to delays in the arrival of F404-IN20 engines from the American engine maker GE Aerospace. These jets are intended to replace the last of the IAF's Russian-origin MiG-21s, which are scheduled to retire in September. Amid the IAF's mounting challenges, HAL has assured that 12 Mk1A aircraft will be delivered by the end of 2025-26. The company has already built six, which are currently flying with reserve engines — a temporary measure. The second GE engine for the Mk1A was delivered to HAL in mid-July. The Tejas, an indigenous single-engine, fourth-generation multirole light fighter aircraft, has been developed by the Aeronautical Development Agency. It originates from the LCA programme launched in the 1980s to replace the IAF's ageing MiG-21 fleet — a goal now pursued through the operational Tejas MkI and the planned induction of the more advanced Mk1A variant.
