Battery-fitted rickshaws in Salt Lake are reaching dangerous speeds of up to 45 kmph, far exceeding Kolkata's average traffic speed
KOLKATA: Battery-fitted rickshaws in Salt Lake are now touching speeds of 45 kmph, which is almost three times the average traffic speed in Kolkata, a drive by Bidhannagar Police has found.
Last year, the average vehicular traffic speed in Kolkata was 17.4 kmph, which means it took commuters an average of 34 minutes and 33 seconds to travel 10 km. Salt Lake's rickshaws can do the 10-km run in 13 minutes and 20 seconds.
The unregulated speeding has raised safety concerns in the township with residents calling for a crackdown on these rickshaws, particularly after two fatal incidents. On May 13, Shikha Dutta and her dog died after being hit by a rickshaw in BL Block.
Last June, a Netaji Nagar resident had died after being similarly hit near Central Park. Several others have been injured after being thrown off.
Of about 4,000 rickshaws operating from 94 stands in Salt Lake and Sector V, 3,800 have been retrofitted to function as motorised rickshaws, a Bidhannagar police officer said. While the original handbrake of a pedal rickshaw has been retained, an accelerator, indicators and shock absorbers have been added along with an alkaline battery to power the motor.

"The top speed of these rickshaws ranges between 31 kmph and 45 kmph, which is dangerous for three-wheeled vehicles primarily meant for last-mile journeys," a senior Bidhannagar cop said.
Mend ways or face action: Cops warn e-rickshaws
A Bidhannagar police officer said they were trying out means to limit the speed of mechanised rickshaws and would go for all-out prosecution if the operators did not mend their ways.
At a recent awareness drive conducted by Bidhannagar Commissionerate's traffic division, DC (traffic) Nima Norbu Bhutia issued warnings to rickshaw operators and directed them to install speed limiters by May 31, restricting maximum speed to 25 kmph.
While mechanised rickshaws have led to a sharp rise in the number of trips and earnings for operators, it is the inadequacy of the handbrake to handle the high speed that is causing accidents.
The original handbrakes are designed to handle a speed of at best 15 kmph of pedalled rickshaws. Sharp turns at very high speed often result in these vehicles toppling over. Local residents that TOI spoke to said they constantly fear getting hit by these rickshaws.
"These battery-operated rickshaws are silent and we can't hear them approaching. I constantly fear getting hit from behind. On Salt Lake's narrow roads inside the blocks or within residential complexes, that's very dangerous. They have just thrown in an electric motor without upgrading the brakes," Ashish Ganguly of HA Block.
Sohini Chakraborty, a resident of CJ Block asked, "We need a system in place to check how these vehicles operate. Do the drivers have licence? Are the rickshaws roadworthy?"

Accompanied by priests, Musk participated in rituals inside the temple, while chants of 'Hare Krishna Hare Ram' mahamantra echoed in the background. The South African engineer, who is on a week-long visit to India, appeared deeply immersed in the spiritual atmosphere of the temple, with visuals showing him respectfully engaging in the rituals. The people are full of love, kindness, probably the best people you can meet.' Musk described the Ram temple as 'absolutely wonderful' and 'one of the best things' he has ever done. Dressed in a traditional kurta-pyjama during the Ayodhya visit, he was accompanied by his daughter, Alexandra Musk. His stop at the temple town was brief, lasting just over an hour, but marked by high security, with a three-tier surveillance setup in place. Errol Musk, who arrived in India on June 1, is here until June 6 to explore green technology and EV charging infrastructure in association with Servotech Renewable Power System Ltd. His presence has drawn attention not only for its business angle but also for his engagement with India's spiritual heritage. While Errol's scheduled visit to Agra's Taj Mahal may be dropped due to extreme heat, his focus remains on spiritual exploration and business collaboration. 'I'm here to begin working with Servotech and am looking forward to spending a lot of time in the country,' he was quoted as saying by news agency PTI.

Kill Bill, says Musk, as he emerges as alternative power center to Trump

TOI correspondent from US : Elon Musk has not only parted ways with President Trump but is emerging as a political challenger to the MAGA supremo after clashing with him on the so-called Big Beautiful Bill that the tech-tycoon says will bankrupt America. "Call your Senator, Call your Congressman, Bankrupting America is NOT ok! KILL the BILL!" Musk said on a second day of attacks on Trump and his legislative flock, planting a banner of revolt in the Republican Party, and emerging as a new power center to challenge Trump. Although Musk is not eligible to run for the White House because he is not US-born, he has allied with Republican Senators who share his alarm over America's mounting debt and who can scupper the bill as it comes to the Senate before the July 4 recess. "This spending bill contains the largest increase in the debt ceiling in US history! It is the Debt Slavery Bill," Musk said in one of several posts on a legislation that Trump owns, repurposing a poster from the movie Kill Bill. Musk went on to pin reactions from Fox News to illustrate that his stand on spending cuts to contain the deficit had more support from the rank and file than Trump Republicans had for the BBB. Musk also went on to endorse a proposal by GOP Senator Mike Lee to draft a constitutional amendment to oust every member of Congress whenever inflation exceeds 3 per cent, an idea once mooted by Warren Buffett to eliminate the US deficit. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Memperdagangkan CFD Emas dengan salah satu spread terendah? Democrats are rejoicing over Musk attacks on Trump, who, in an ironic twist, reached out to a liberal Democratic senator, Elizabeth Warren (who he has long derided as "pocohontas' and a "radical left loony) to work on legislation to scrap the debt ceiling. "I am very pleased to announce that, after all of these years, I agree with Senator Elizabeth Warren on SOMETHING. The Debt Limit should be entirely scrapped to prevent an Economic catastrophe," Trump said on his social media platform. "@realDonaldTrumpand I agree: the debt limit should be scrapped to prevent an economic catastrophe. Let's pass a bipartisan bill and get rid of it forever," Warren responded, indicating new alignments centering on fiscal policy.

Rahul Gandhi cites fall in vehicle, mobile sales to criticise govt's ‘event-driven' politics

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Thursday cited the drop in the sales of two-wheelers and cars as well as the fall in the mobile market to attack the government and said the country needs politics that is not about the glitz of events but connected with the reality of everyday life. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha asserted that the country needs an economy that works for every Indian, not just for a select few capitalists. "The statistics tell the truth. In the last year, two-wheeler sales have fallen by 17 per cent and car sales by 8.6 per cent. The mobile market has fallen by 7 per cent. On the other hand, both expenses and debt are constantly increasing: house rent, domestic inflation, education expenses, almost everything is becoming expensive," Gandhi said in his post in Hindi on X. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo — RahulGandhi (@RahulGandhi) These are not just figures, but the reality of the economic pressure under which every common Indian is suffering, he said. The Congress has been attacking the government over its handling of the economy, alleging that issues like rising prices , decreasing private investment, and stagnating wages are hurting common people.
