Chris Woakes Shares 'Good News' About Shoulder Injury Before Ashes
England's Chris Woakes is recovering well from a shoulder dislocation, boosting his Ashes tour chances.
Following a fiercely contested Test series against India, England have shifted their attention to the upcoming Ashes tour of Australia, with fast bowler Chris Woakes providing a positive update on his recovery.
Woakes, who dislocated his shoulder while fielding in the fifth Test at The Oval in London earlier this month, stated that his rehabilitation is progressing quicker than anticipated, enhancing his prospects of being fit for the high-profile series.
'Certainly good news for me. That's the best way to look at it," Woakes, without an arm sling, commented to Sky Sports at The Hundred. 'Obviously, out of the sling and feel like I can move it a lot better now, which is good two weeks down the line. I suppose once you get a little bit more movement into it, it feels a little bit more normal. But still a lot of work to do," he added.
Woakes, who had a lackluster performance in the five-Test series against India with only 11 wickets, mentioned that he is concentrating on rehabilitation after deciding against surgery to be fit for the crucial Ashes series.
'Going to try and (stay) focused on the rehab and get it as strong as possible. Ideally, not for surgery for now, but we'll see how that goes and hopefully we can get it nice and strong again," the pacer said.
Woakes sustained the injury on the opening day of the series decider against India at The Oval. Although ruled out for the remainder of the match, he bravely came out to bat on the tense final morning with his left arm in a sling as England pursued a series-clinching victory, ultimately falling just six runs short.
Woakes' recovery news is a significant boost for England, who face another five-Test challenge against arch-rivals Australia starting November 21.

Carlo Ancelottis son wins his first Copa Libertadores match as Botafogo coach
Rio de Janeiro, Aug 15 (AP) Davide Ancelotti, the son of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti, has won his first Copa Libertadores match as the new manager of defending champion Botafogo. The 35-year-old Ancelotti joined the Brazilian club in July for his first experience as a full-time coach. Botafogo beat Ecuador's Liga de Quito 1-0 at Nilton Santos Stadium in the first leg of a round-of-16 tie late Thursday. Striker Artur scored after 14 seconds. For official purposes, assistant Cláudio Cacapa signed the match-related documents as Botafogo's coach. Ancelotti did not have full authorization from CONMEBOL to fill that role for a bureaucratic reason, according to Botafogo. Last month, Ancelotti was contracted through 2026 after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team's round-of-16 elimination at the Club World Cup. Botafogo is the Brazilian and Copa Libertadores titles holder. (AP) UNG view comments First Published: August 15, 2025, 22:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. England making Jacob Bethell its youngest ever mens cricket captain at 21
Agency: London, Aug 15 (AP) Jacob Bethell will break a record which has stood for 136 years when the 21-year-old allrounder becomes England's youngest ever men's cricket captain next month. Bethell will lead England against Ireland in three Twenty20s in Dublin. The previous youngest England captain was Monty Bowden, who was 23 in 1889 when he took charge for a test in South Africa after regular skipper Aubrey Smith fell ill with fever. Some senior players will be missing in Ireland including usual white-ball captain Harry Brook, who will be in charge of one-day international and T20 games against visiting South Africa earlier in September. 'Jacob Bethell has impressed with his leadership qualities ever since he has been with the England squads, and the series against Ireland will provide him with the opportunity to further develop those skills on the international stage," England men's selector Luke Wright said in a statement on Friday. The captaincy is part of a rapid rise for Bethell, who made his debuts for England in all three formats only last year. The series in Ireland begins on Sept. 17.
