SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia says govt not probing Amritpal Singh in murder case

Time of India28-04-2025

Chandigarh:
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) functionary
Bikram Singh Majithia
on Monday accused AAP govt in Punjab of "not acting" against
Waris Punjab De
chief and Khadoor Sahib MP
Amritpal Singh
"in the Gurpreet Hari Nau murder case or even the UAPA case involving planning of
political assassinations
".
Addressing a press conference, Majithia said AAP govt had, in fact, helped Amritpal by extending his NSA detention. "Similarly, no attempt is being made to probe a Rs 22-crore dacoity committed by Jaipal Bhullar, in which Amritpal claimed he had a hand," added Majithia.
He stated that Amritpal was also not being questioned about his link with gangsters.
Earlier in the day, responding to a question on a purported viral audio linking Amritpal with slain gangster Jaipal Bhullar, Punjab director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav said, "I am very keen to comment on it, but it is a quasi-judicial matter where every accused has rights. "I cannot jeopardise the rights of an accused," he said.
Majithia also released a purported video of Amritpal's brother claiming he was "partaking drugs" and asserted that "Amritpal had only put up an anti-drug façade, but was actually involved in drug smuggling besides being closely associated with gangsters".
Majithia also showed another video of Amritpal's father, Tarsem Singh, claiming drugs had been planted on his son Harpreet. "This video makes it clear that Harpreet is a habitual drug offender and that his father Tarsem was lying to protect him despite being a baptised Sikh," said Majithia.
The SAD leader said, "Whatever I said has been substantiated by Sukhpreet Hair Nau, whose brother Gurpreet Hari Nau was murdered at Amritpal's behest. Police investigation also revealed that two drug addicts – Anmolpreet and Navjot Neeta, who murdered Gurpreet, were linked with gangsters Arsh Dalla and Lawrence Bishnoi. This means Amritpal is also in league with gangsters."
Majithia also released a video which purportedly showed Punjab State Mandi Board engineer-in-chief Jatinder Singh Bhangoo leading Amritpal out of the gurdwara in Moga where he surrendered to the police. "While this proves Bhangoo's hand in sheltering Amritpal when he went underground after the Ajnala incident, the Punjab Police is yet to take any action in the case. Instead of taking any action, chief minister Bhagwant Mann shared the stage with Bhangu at an official event recently," Majithia added.
Amritpal group's spokesperson slams claim
Imaan Singh Khara, the chief spokesperson and legal advisor of Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) headed by Amritpal Singh, hit back at Majithia and said, "Majithia is levelling false allegations against Bhai Amritpal Singh since his public support has eroded. By falsely accusing Bhai Amritpal Singh, he is trying to regain his lost security cover and maintain a façade of influence among the people." Khara, who held a press conference in Chandigarh on Saturday, dismissed the purported call recording of Amritpal released earlier by Majithia as "AI-generated", a claim mocked by Majithia on Monday.

Security heightened at Golden Temple ahead of Operation Bluestar anniversary

Amritsar: Both the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the police have made adequate security arrangements in and around the Golden Temple to prevent any untoward incidents in view of the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar—an Army operation carried out to flush out militants from the Golden Temple complex. Sources said that as in previous years, intelligence inputs are being gathered to prevent any clandestine activities. A good number of police personnel in plainclothes will be deployed inside the Golden Temple complex. Police officials have also been holding meetings with Sikh groups and organisations that issued statements opposing Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj delivering a message to the community from the platform of Akal Takht during an event marking the anniversary on June 6. Bhagwant Singh Dhangera, manager, Golden Temple, said that all necessary and essential security arrangements have been put in place throughout the complex. He also appealed to the sangat (community) to cooperate with the SGPC in maintaining a peaceful and respectful environment. Amritsar police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, said that for the past two days, security and law and order arrangements have been actively enforced. In the meantime, the SGPC began an akhand path (uninterrupted recitation of Guru Granth Sahib) at Akal Takht to mark the 41st anniversary of Operation Bluestar. The bhog of akhand path will be performed on June 6. SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami and others were present at the beginning of the akhand path on Wednesday. Dhami said that the brutal actions carried out by the then govt in June 1984 inflicted deep wounds upon the Sikh community — wounds that can never be forgotten. BOX Nihangs to oppose Gargaj address The heads of various Nihang Singh organisations held a meeting and opined that Akal Takht officiating jathedar Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj was not acceptable to the Panth, so it will not be appropriate for him to deliver the message to the community on June 6 on "Ghallughara Diwas" (Operation Bulestar anniversary). They said that for the restoration of proper "maryada" (Sikh code of religious conduct), all sects, Damdami Taksal, saintly figures, and Panthic organisations are united on their decision. Jathedar Baba Balbir Singh, chief of Shiromani Panth Akali Budha Dal, said that Gargaj was not appointed as jathedar according to Panthic maryada, so he has no authority to directly intervene in Panthic matters. Stating that every effort should be made to avoid any confrontation on June 6, Baba Balbir said SGPC should introspect on its decisions and must not repeatedly make decisions that go against Sikh sentiments. Nothing will happen: Gargaj Amritsar: "Nothing will happen." This was how Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, the officiating jathedar of Akal Takht, responded when asked about the strong objections raised by Sikh organisations, including Damdami Taksal, to his expected address to the community on June 6. "I am 200% sure that this year's Ghallughara programme will be even more peaceful than previous years," he said, adding, "Baba Harnam Singh Khalsa, the chief of Damdami Taksal, Chowk Mehta, and leaders of other Sikh organisations are all Gurubhai (brothers in faith). The Taksal's former head, Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, attained martyrdom here. It is unthinkable that they would create any disturbance." He emphasised that while differences may exist, "such divisions disappear when Sikhs come together in the Gurughar (house of the Guru)". MSID:: 121624134 413 |

Gujarat Congress demands CBI investigation into MNREGA scam

Gandhinagar: The state unit of the Congress party has demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the MNREGA scam in Gujarat. They alleged that minister Bachubhai Khabad, whose two sons were arrested for their involvement in the scam, is obstructing the investigation. Speaking to reporters in Gandhinagar, Amit Chavda, leader of the Congress Legislature Party, said that bills worth over Rs 3 crore were paid without any work being done under MNREGA on 12 land survey numbers belonging to Khabad's family. "We demand a CBI investigation into the scam. The minister has been obstructing the investigation in the case. Why has he not been removed from the cabinet?" Chavda questioned. Chavda said that despite the Congress submitting complaints with evidence of widespread MNREGA-related corruption, the govt has so far investigated cases only in Devgadh Baria and Dhanpur talukas. "A CBI probe will bring to the fore similar corruption cases in different districts," Chavda said.

‘Govt of being inconsiderate towards anganwadi workers': Protesters in Ludhiana demand better remuneration

Ludhiana: Anganwadi workers staged a four-hour-long protest against the central and state govts in front of Gate No.1 of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), pressing for their demands, including regularisation of jobs. The protesters also carried out a rally on Malhar Road and raised slogans against the govts. There are around 54,000 anganwadi workers in Punjab and about 4,500 workers in Ludhiana district alone. Usha Rani, president of the workers' union, said before the AAP came to power in the state, the party had promised to double the wages of Anganwadi workers and helpers. However, despite these commitments, no such changes have been implemented. "Even in today's time of soaring inflation, anganwadi workers earn only around Rs 10,000 a month, while helpers are paid just Rs 5,350," she said. She added that the workers, most of whom come from economically weaker sections, have been surviving on these meagre wages for years. "It is frustrating that the govt has continued to ignore our long-pending demands. The promises made to us have remained just words, with no action on the ground," she said, accusing the govt of being inconsiderate towards anganwadi workers. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 2025 Top Trending local enterprise accounting software [Click Here] Esseps Learn More Undo They also expressed concern that the govt's decision to admit children directly to pre-primary classes would significantly reduce their workload, as anganwadi workers are primarily responsible for the care and development of children up to six years of age. They suggested that, following the Karnataka govt's model, nursery and LKG education should be conducted through anganwadi centres, and an Anganwadi Leaving Certificate should be made mandatory for admission to primary school. Additionally, they demanded that, in line with the New Education Policy, anganwadi workers and helpers be given the status of Nursery Teacher Training (NTT) teachers for their role in pre-primary education. They also demanded that on the lines of the govt of Karnataka and Gujarat, Anganwadi workers in Punjab, should also be given gratuity upon retirement. The anganwadi workers said the Centre has been monitoring their performance through the Poshan Tracker app, which tracks data related to children aged 0 to 6, including growth monitoring and pre-school education. Though the Centre allocated funds twice since 2016 for mobile phones to aid this work, the workers said the state govt has not released the money. "Most of us belong to economically weaker sections and cannot afford smartphones, which are essential for completing digital tasks," said Anita, an anganwadi worker. "Those who have smartphones had to buy them on their own. The govt must release the funds so we can purchase the required devices." Union president Usha Rani added that the funds should be used to provide laptops or tablets to simplify data entry. The workers also demanded that the mandatory KYC and facial recognition requirements be scrapped immediately. They further called for better infrastructure and supply of pre-school kits at Anganwadi centres. "Anganwadis should be upgraded and made state-of-the-art to match the services we're expected to deliver," said Amarjit, another worker.
