Wiley Nickel endorses Roy Cooper in 2026 U.S. Senate campaign

Yahoo29-07-2025
RALEIGH, N.C. (WNCN) — A day after former North Carolina governor Roy Cooper announced he is running for the United States Senate seat that will be vacated by Republican Thom Tillis, his would-be opponent for the Democratic nomination has dropped out and pledged his support for Cooper.
'We started this campaign to send Thom Tillis packing. Well, mission accomplished I guess!' said Wiley Nickel, who officially launched his candidacy for the 2026 U.S. Senate race in April.
PREVIOUSLY: Wiley Nickel plans to suspend campaign, endorse Roy Cooper for Senate: Sources
Nickel was a two-term state senator before being elected into the U.S. House of Representatives in 2022. He served NC's 13th congressional district — which at the time encompassed all of Johnston County as well as southern Wake County and parts of Harnett and Wayne counties — for one two-year term.
'It was an honor to work alongside Governor Cooper in the State Senate and in Congress. I've seen firsthand his steady, bipartisan leadership. He listens, he shows up, and he gets things done,' Nickel said in his endorsement. 'From making North Carolina the top state for business to guiding our communities through natural disasters, his leadership has made a real difference. And for so many of us, including me, he's been an inspiration to step up and serve. I proudly endorse Governor Cooper for US Senate and look forward to doing everything I can to help him flip this Senate seat from red to blue.'
Cooper's GOP opponent in the race for Tillis' seat is expected to be Republican National Committee chairman Michael Whatley, who sources have said has the backing of President Donald Trump.
Though Nickel suspended his U.S. Senate bid to throw his support behind Cooper, he hinted that a run for a different role could be on the table. On Friday, a source close to Nickel's campaign told CBS 17 that the trained lawyer is considering running for the Wake County District Attorney office that will be vacated by Lorrin Freeman, who earlier this year said she would not seek reelection.
'I've still got a lot of work left to do, that part hasn't changed,' Nickel said Tuesday. 'Public service is a part of who I am and you'll hear more from me soon.'

Texas Senate panel advances new House maps amid standoff

A Texas Senate committee advanced a new GOP-friendly House map on Thursday as Republicans look to quickly move forward in both chambers with passing new congressional lines that would give the Republicans several pickup opportunities ahead of 2026. In a 6-1 vote, the Texas Senate Special Committee on Congressional Redistricting advanced an identical set of congressional lines that a Texas state House passed earlier this month. The House map aims to give Republicans five more pick-up opportunities, impacting lawmakers in the Austin, Houston, Dallas-Forth Worth and Rio Grande Valley areas. The move in the Texas Senate committee tees the House lines for a vote on the state Senate floor. But with Texas Democrats having fled the state to block the quorum, or the minimum number of lawmakers needed to conduct business, the effort to pass the maps in both chambers have stalled. It remains unclear how long Democrats will stay away from Texas. Republicans say the FBI is working with officials to help track down the Democrats who fled the state. 2024 Election Coverage Texas state Sen. Borris Miles (D), who sits on the Senate redistricting committee, strongly condemned the Republicans' efforts to pass the gerrymandered map in remarks before the vote. 'I'm truly saddened, but I guess at this point I should not be shocked by the fact that my colleagues — you all — have openly embraced an invitation to engage in overt racism, mindful of our sordid history of disenfranchising people who look like me,' Miles said. 'These seats don't belong to Donald J. Trump. He's not owning — he doesn't own anything,' Miles said. 'And we should not be auctioned off — our votes — to get him five more seats, Mr. Chairman. These seats belong to the people of Texas.'

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Veterans Affairs Secretary Doug Collins and Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, are also expected to be there, along with Chris LaCivita, Trump's former campaign co-manager and a Marine veteran who is also a Purple Heart recipient. Advertisement After a shooter's bullet pierced the upper part of Trump's right ear in Butler just days before the 2024 Republican National Convention, the then-Republican presidential candidate was gifted medals from some Purple Heart recipients. The medals were presented to him at campaign events during the race's closing months. According to the White House, some of those Purple Heart recipients were brought to Trump's campaign stops so that he could return their medals to them. National Purple Heart Day is marked annually on Aug. 7. The Purple Heart, the oldest military award still in use and is awarded to service members who are killed or wounded while engaging in enemy action or resulting from acts of terrorism. According to the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, more than 1.8 million medals have been presented since the award's inception in 1782. Advertisement
