Paramount and Skydance merger approved and Trump visits Powell at Federal Reserve: Morning Rundown

NBC News3 days ago
Federal government regulators approve an $8 billion merger between Paramount and Skydance. Jerome Powell pushes back during Donald Trump's visit to the Federal Reserve's headquarters. And the woman behind the viral 'Jet2 holiday' soundbite is surprised at its popularity.
Here's what to know today.
Paramount's $8 billion merger with Skydance is approved
The Federal Communications Commission said it had approved Skydance Media's $8 billion bid to acquire CBS News parent company Paramount after Skydance made several concessions to the Trump administration. The merger paves the way for a tectonic shift in ownership of one of America's three major networks. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr said in a news release that the move would bring change to CBS News' coverage, claiming 'Americans no longer trust legacy national news media to report fully, accurately, and fairly.'
Among the concessions that Skydance made with regulators was an agreement to not implement any DEI programs. The company also said it would 'undertake a comprehensive review' of CBS and install an ombudsman for at least two years who will consider 'complaints of bias' at CBS News. Other companies that have billion-dollar transactions pending before the FCC have also backed off DEI programs, including Verizon and T-Mobile.
Earlier this month, Paramount Global settled a lawsuit with President Donald Trump for $16 million over a lawsuit in which he alleged that the way CBS edited a '60 Minutes' interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris was 'election and voter interference.'
And last week, CBS announced it was canceling 'The Late Show,' currently hosted by Stephen Colbert, who had recently criticized the settlement. CBS said the cancellation was 'purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night.'
The lone Democrat in FCC leadership, Commissioner Anna Gomez, criticized the Trump administration's push to secure promises from companies, including anti-DEI measures. 'Even more alarming,' Gomez said in an emailed statement, the FCC 'is now imposing never-before-seen controls over newsroom decisions and editorial judgment, in direct violation of the First Amendment and the law.'
In addition to CBS News, Paramount's assets include Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, The CW, MTV, BET and several film franchises. Hours after Paramount announced Wednesday that the creators of 'South Park' agreed to produce 50 new episodes in a deal reportedly valued at $1.5 billion, creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker excoriated the company and aggressively skewered Trump in the premiere episode of the Comedy Central show.
Trump visited the Federal Reserve's headquarters amid ongoing renovations at the building, where ongoing renovations have served as the administration's latest possible pretext for removing Fed Chair Jerome Powell from his post. Wearing a hard hat, the president said the construction cost had ballooned to 'about $3.1 billion,' up from $2.5 billion. But Powell, standing next to Trump, retorted, 'I haven't heard that.' After Trump handed him a piece of paper, Powell said the elevated cost Trump was citing included of a 5-year-old project.
Trump's visit to the Federal Reserve was notable not only because of his apparent dissatisfaction toward Powell's refusal to lower interest rates, but also for its rarity. The last president to visit the Fed headquarters was George W. Bush in 2006. Before that, Gerald Ford visited in 1975, and Franklin D. Roosevelt inaugurated the building in 1937.
Trump, who as recently as last week suggested he might fire Powell, told reporters yesterday, 'I just don't think it's necessary' to fire him. When asked if there was anything Powell could do to get Trump to 'back off,' Trump said, 'lower rates,' as he slapped Powell's back in a friendly manner. Read the full story here.

Staff Pick: The sound of the summer isn't a song — it's an ad
'Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday.' If that phrase rings a bell, congratulations on being extremely online. Audio from the ad, mixed with Jess Glynne's 2015 hit 'Hold My Hand,' has become the meme of the summer, where users ironically juxtapose the soundbite with footage of chaotic holiday experiences.
But if you've been wondering how the narrator of the British airline ad feels about her viral fame, producer Fiona Day has you covered. Zoë Lister said she has been absolutely stunned by how much the meme has resonated, especially in the U.S.
Even if you know nothing about the meme, this story is a great look at how the most innocuous thing can end up changing someone's life — even if it's just the sound of their voice. — Josh Feldman, platforms editor

Blink Charging, dfYOUNG Partner For Simplified EV Fleet Management

Blink Charging (NASDAQ:BLNK) announced a new partnership with logistics firm dfYOUNG on Monday to simplify EV fleet management and home charger installations for corporate sales teams across the U.S. The companies aim to streamline the EV transition by combining Blink's charging technology with dfYOUNG's fleet logistics expertise. As part of the collaboration, dfYOUNG will deliver and install pre-packaged, RFID-enabled Blink chargers at sales representatives' will handle around-the-clock customer support, while dfYOUNG oversees fleet operations, which include delivery tracking, job completion, safety checks, and regulatory compliance. The news comes as Blink Charging's stock has faced significant headwinds, plunging over 19% year-to-date. This decline is largely attributed to the company missing analyst revenue estimates for the past four consecutive quarters and EPS estimates for at least two quarters. The stock performance has also been impacted by the Trump administration's recent reversal of EV tax credits. The U.S. House of Representatives approved President Donald Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill,' which terminates the $7,500 tax credit for new U.S.-made EVs, effective September 30, 2025. This policy change is expected to negatively affect the EV industry and its ecosystem, including companies like Blink Charging, with some automakers already increasing EV prices in response. Despite these challenges, Blink Charging has remained committed to unlocking value through strategic partnerships, acquisitions, and geographical expansions. Last Monday, Blink Charging expanded its partnership with Belgian real estate firm Group Bernaerts to boost EV charging infrastructure across Belgium. By the end of 2025, it plans to install at least 176 active chargers at Bernaerts-owned properties. The stock gained close to 13% after the update. Since the partnership was launched in 2022, the two companies have deployed 88 charging stations in Antwerp and Mechelen. As they accelerate their sustainability goals, they expect to double that number by the end of this year. On July 16, Blink Charging expanded its EV network in South Florida by installing Series 7 chargers at two Accesso-managed commercial properties. The move strengthens Blink's regional presence, bringing clean energy charging to high-traffic sites in Sunrise and West Boca Raton. On July 14, Blink Charging expanded its EV charging footprint by acquiring Zemetric, a Silicon Valley-based fleet-focused infrastructure firm. The deal brings Zemetric's leadership team, now filling key executive roles at Blink, together to accelerate innovation and global growth in smart fleet charging. On July 10, Blink Charging advanced its U.K. expansion by partnering with Axxeltrova to launch a £100 million fund for EV infrastructure growth. Under the deal, Axxeltrova will fund and own the chargers, while Blink installs, operates, and maintains them through its Blink Network. Jay Leno rips partisanship in late night shows

Comedian Jay Leno bemoaned increased partisanship and political humor on late night shows, saying comics who opt for political jokes are making a mistake. 'I love political humor, don't get me wrong,' the former host of 'The Tonight Show' said during a recent interview. 'But it's just what happens when people wind up cozying too much to one side or the other.' The former TV host's comments were first highlighted by Mediaite. Leno's comments come just days after CBS announced it was canceling 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert,' a move that the network said was financially necessary but some critics have pointed to as evidence of sensitivity by the network's parent company to President Trump. Trump celebrated Colbert's cancellation and suggested in a social media post last week, ABC late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel could be ousted soon. Leno, who left the world of late night in 2014, suggested leading comics are under increased pressure to give their opinion on political matters and as a result are only connection with 'half your audience.' 'I'd like to think that people come to a comedy show to get away from the pressures of life,' he said. 'Why shoot for just half an audience all the time? … I mean, I like to bring people into the big picture. I don't know why you would want to alienate one specific group.'

Rep. Ralph Norman launches bid for South Carolina governor

Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) on Sunday announced he's launching a bid to succeed term-limited South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster (R), making him the latest Republican to throw his hat in the mix. 'I've seen way too many corrupt politicians in Columbia, South Carolina, looking out for themselves and not for you. And in Washington, I've seen career politicians who care more about their next election than they do securing our future generations,' Norman told supporters in Rock Hill, S.C. 'We do not need more career politician folks or lawyers running government,' he continued. 'We need business leaders, people who have signed the front of a paycheck and people who have signed the back of a paycheck, folks who have built something, taken risk, made money, yes, and lost money.' Norman joins several other prominent Republicans in launching a bid for South Carolina governor. South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson and state Sen. Josh Kimbrell have also announced campaigns to succeed McMaster. Rep. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) is expected to make a decision on whether to run for governor soon. Nikki Haley, a former U.N. ambassador who also served as South Carolina governor, and former Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.) have endorsed Norman in the race. Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows has also backed Norman. While the House Freedom Caucus member praised President Trump in his remarks, the question of who the president endorses in the race still looms. Norman endorsed Haley in the 2024 GOP presidential primary, later getting behind Trump once the former U.N. ambassador dropped out of the race. But Trump places a lot of weight on loyalty and has been unafraid to go after Republicans who he's believed have been insufficiently loyal. Whoever wins the Republican primary next year is seen as the heavy favorite to win in the November election.
