Vi Q1 loss widens to ₹6,608 crore; Kishore to replace Moondra as CEO

Vodafone Idea's (Vi's) losses widened to ₹6,608 crore year-on-year (Y-o-Y) in the first quarter of 2025-26 (Q1FY26) but narrowed sequentially from ₹7,166 crore in Q4FY25. Revenues rose nearly 5 per cent Y-o-Y to ₹11,164 crore in Q1FY26, up from ₹10,764 crore in Q1FY25. However, sequentially, revenues fell slightly from ₹11,228 crore in Q4FY25. Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortisation (Ebitda) rose to ₹4,612 crore, up 9.7 per cent from ₹4,204 crore. However, the telco's finance cost rose to ₹5,928 crore, up 6.7 per cent from ₹5,519 crore in the same quarter of the previous financial year. The average revenue per user (Arpu), a key metric of profitability for a telecom services provider, rose to ₹165 in Q1FY26, up 13 per cent from ₹146 in Q1FY25, and from ₹164 in Q4FY25. The company attributed the increase to tariff revisions and customer upgrades. Despite the increase, Vi's Arpu remains the lowest among its peers, with a large gap compared to Bharti Airtel that led the market with an Arpu of ₹250 as of the June quarter. Meanwhile, Vi appointed Abhijit Kishore as the next chief executive officer (CEO) for a period of three years in place of Akshaya Moondra, whose three-year term ends on August 18. Currently the chief operating officer (COO), Kishore has been with the company in various roles since 2015. In a statement to the BSE on Thursday, the Aditya Birla group company said it was in discussions with the department of telecommunications (DoT) for seeking relief on payment of adjusted gross revenue (AGR). The company is liable to pay AGR in equal monthly instalments (EMIs) beginning March-end 2026. Vi added that it was also in discussion with lenders for waivers. The telco's outstanding debt from banks stands at ₹1,944.5 crore while deferred payment obligation towards spectrum bought in auctions payable over 20 years till FY44, as well as AGR dues that are to be paid till 2031 stood at ₹1.99 trillion. 'The group's ability to settle the above liabilities is dependent on further support from the DoT on the AGR matter, fundraise through equity and debt, and generation of cash flow from operations. Based on current efforts, the group believes that it would be able to get DoT support, successfully arrange funds, and generate cash flow from operations,' Vi said. The telco has to pay ₹16,428 crore as AGR instalment by March 2026, and ₹2,641 crore as deferred payment obligations for spectrum by June 2026. 'We continue to invest in capex and to support our broader capex plans of ₹500-550 billion, we remain engaged with lenders to secure debt financing,' Moondra said. In the quarter ended March 2025, Vi's Board approved raising ₹20,000 crore through another follow-on public offer (FPO), a private placement, or through any other permissible mode. The telco had issued India's largest FPO at ₹18,000 crore in April 2024, followed by preferential share issues to promoters and vendors Nokia and Ericsson. Vi's promoters had also put in ₹4,000 crore, besides ₹1,980 crore raised from entities belonging to promoter Vodafone Group PLC through preferential issue in January 2025. Having launched 5G services in March, the telco said it was offering the high-speed data service in 22 cities across 13 circles while the plan is to expand its 5G footprint to additional key cities across all 17 circles by September 2025. Subscriber loss was limited to 0.5 million in the quarter, taking its customer base to 197.7 million, with 127.4 million as 4G and 5G customers. Vi added that its strategic partnership with AST SpaceMobile was aimed at bringing direct-to-device satellite broadband connectivity in the remote areas where there are no terrestrial networks.

Vodafone Idea narrowed its net loss to Rs 6,608 crore in the June quarter

Vodafone Idea narrowed its net loss to Rs 6,608 crore in the June quarter from Rs 7,166 crore in the quarter before, helped by higher revenue from 4G and 5G users, lower finance costs amidst a sharp drop in subscriber losses. Independence Day 2025 Before Trump, British used tariffs to kill Indian textile Bank of Azad Hind: When Netaji gave India its own currency Swadeshi 2.0: India is no longer just a market, it's a maker Vi also named chief operating officer Abhijit Kishore as the next chief executive officer for a three-year term, following the end of current CEO Akshaya Moondra's tenure on August 18. The joint venture of UK's Vodafone Group and India's Aditya Birla Group, which started 5G services in 22 cities across 13 telecom circles, was able to cut subscriber losses by about 90% to 500,000 in Q1FY26 from 5 million each in Q2 and Q3 of FY25, the telco said. 'This has been a decisive turnaround quarter,' Moondra said in an earnings statement on Thursday. 'Investments made over the past three quarters to expand our 4G coverage have started yielding results, as reflected in the 90% lower subscriber loss compared to Q2 and Q3 of last financial year, being the lowest subscriber decline since merger.' He added that data consumption during the quarter touched a record high. Vi commenced 5G services in 22 cities in 13 circles in the fiscal first quarter including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, Mysuru, and Ahmedabad. It plans to extend coverage to all 17 circles where it holds 5G airwaves by this month-end. However, the early and widespread 5G rollout by larger rivals Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel has made it challenging for Vi to catch up in terms of market penetration, user adoption, and overall perception, said analysts. Vi's blended average revenue per user or Arpu—a key performance metric—grew sequentially to Rs 165 in the June quarter from Rs 164. The 4G/5G subscriber base expanded to 127.4 million from 126.7 million in the March quarter. Overall subscriber base as of June-end increased to 197.7 million from 198.2 million in the previous quarter. 'Vi's 1mn post-paid net adds in 1Q were the highest in recent quarters. Data traffic grew 8.2% qoq to 74.2PB/day, highest in recent quarters,' IIFL Securities said in a note. Quarterly revenue grew 0.8% on-quarter to Rs 11,023 crore. This April, Vi sought relief from the Centre on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues, but after its request was dismissed by the Supreme Court in May, the company is continuing talks with the telecom department to find a workable payment solution before the first instalment is due, it said. 'The Group' s ability to continue as a going concern is dependent on support from DoT on the AGR matter, successfully arranging funding and generation of cash flow from its operations that it needs to settle its liabilities as they fall due,' auditor SR Batliboy said in its report. The company's spectrum payments, except for the 2021, 2022, and 2024 auctions, and AGR dues up to FY19 are under a four-year moratorium till FY25. The final payable amounts will be confirmed by December 31, 2025, and AGR dues will then have to be paid in six yearly instalments starting March 31, 2026. As of June 30, 2025, Vi's outstanding debt from banks is Rs 1,945 crore and deferred obligation towards spectrum—payable till FY44—and towards AGR—payable FY31—aggregates to Rs 1.99 lakh crore. Of these, the AGR instalment due FY26 is Rs 16,428 crore and deferred spectrum payment payable by June 2026 is Rs 2641 crore, regulatory filings showed. 'The Group's ability to settle the above liabilities is dependent on further support from the DoT on the AGR matter, fund raise through equity and debt and generation of cash flow from operations. Based on current efforts, the Group believes that it would be able to get DoT support, successfully arrange funds and generate cash flow from operations,' Vi said. The telco has been incurring losses since the merger of Vodafone India and Idea Cellular in August 2018, and its weak cash position due to piling debt meant it wasn't able to invest adequately in expanding 4G network and start 5G rollouts, leading to rapid user losses, according to analysts. Having already raised equity funding of about Rs 24,000 crore, the cash-strapped telco is also in talks with a consortium of banks to raise up to Rs 25,000 crore and additional non-fund-based facilities of up to Rs 10,000 crore, the company had said previously. Moondra said the company is continuing to spend on capex and is in negotiations with lenders to raise debt financing for its broader capex plans of Rs 50,000-55,000 crore.

Vodafone Idea's (VI's) losses widened to Rs 6,608 crore in the quarter ended June 2025, compared to Rs 6,432 crore in the same period last year, but narrowed sequentially from Rs 7,166 crore in the quarter ended March 2025. Revenue rose nearly 5 per cent year-on-year to Rs 11,164 crore in the June quarter, up from Rs 10,764 crore a year earlier, and increased sequentially from Rs 11,228 crore in the March quarter. Average revenue per user (ARPU) rose to Rs 165 in the quarter, up 13 per cent from Rs 146 in the year-ago period and from Rs 164 in the March quarter, aided by tariff revisions and customer upgrades. Despite the increase, VI's ARPU remains the lowest among peers, with Bharti Airtel leading at Rs 250 in the June quarter. The country's third-largest carrier by subscribers appointed Chief Operating Officer Abhijit Kishore as its next chief executive officer, succeeding Akshaya Moondra, whose three-year term ends on 18 August. Kishore has been with the company since 2015 in various roles. In a statement to the BSE on Thursday, the Aditya Birla Group company said it was in discussions with the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to seek relief on adjusted gross revenue (AGR) payments in equal monthly instalments from March-end 2026. The telco must pay Rs 16,428 crore as AGR instalments by March 2026 and Rs 2,641 crore in deferred spectrum payments by June 2026. 'We continue to invest in capex, and to support our broader capex plans of Rs 500–550 billion, we remain engaged with lenders to secure debt financing,' Moondra said. In the March 2025 quarter, VI's board approved raising Rs 20,000 crore through another follow-on public offer (FPO), private placement including qualified institutional placement, or any other permissible mode. The telco had issued India's largest FPO of Rs 18,000 crore in April 2024, followed by preferential share issues to promoters and vendors Nokia and Ericsson. VI's promoters had also contributed Rs 4,000 crore, in addition to Rs 1,980 crore raised from Vodafone Group PLC entities via a preferential issue in January 2025.
