ESPN reporter rips Dan Patrick over concerns with NFL deal: ‘I'm embarrassed for you'
ESPN senior writer Don Van Natta Jr. lambasted Dan Patrick after the former 'SportsCenter' anchor questioned if the outlet would still cover negative NFL stories.

'Dan, [ESPN reporter Kalyn Kahler] and I did a run of exclusive reporting on the NFLPA story that led directly to Lloyd Howell's resignation: A confidentiality agreement, the Carlyle Group, strip club receipts,' Van Natta posted on X Wednesday night.
'Do your homework before you malign your ex-colleagues. I'm embarrassed for you.'
Van Natta and Kahler teamed up to report nine stories for ESPN about the recent NFLPA scandal and Howell's resignation in recent weeks.

On Wednesday's episode of his 'Dan Patrick Show,' Patrick voiced his skepticism on how ESPN will handle the deal from a journalistic standpoint.
'The journalist in me would point out the conflict of interest, but ESPN can't be any further in bed with the NFL,' Patrick said. 'Are they going to look the other way with any negative story that comes up? They probably already do that.

'I don't know how deep ESPN went in on the mess of the NFL Players Association. I know [Pro Football Talk's Mike] Florio did, a couple people did.'

That prompted Van Natta's post, and a subsequent message that continued to blast Patrick for his comments: 'Imagine saying 'the journalist in me' and then failing Journalism 101.'
When someone replied and pointed out that Van Natta's exposé was on the NFLPA, and not the league itself, the reporter replied: 'I am not going to tick off the dozens of investigative stories I have done about the NFL since joining ESPN in 2012. Look them up.'

Van Natta, a two-time Pulitzer Award winner, has been at ESPN since 2012. Before that, he was an investigative correspondent for the New York Times for 16 years.
The NFL is acquiring its equity stake in ESPN in exchange for NFL Network and other media assets owned by the league, including NFL RedZone and NFL Fantasy, the league announced Tuesday.

When asked to pick between Daniels and Herbert, he went with the Commanders' star due to him being a dual threat. "I think Jayden's more dynamic, just his running ability," Ekeler said. "It gives him a little bit more of a factor to take over the game. Where if nothing's there, he can still go make guys miss and he's still flying down the field. Where I think Justin relies a little bit more on his arm." Ekeler also raved about playing with a QB who can pull off a big play at any moment with his arm or legs. "It's awesome to watch these games, the games are so exciting," he continued. "We're players but we still have fun watching everything." In ESPN's poll ranking the NFL's top QBs, Daniels (No. 5) finished two spots ahead of the Chargers star (No.7). McCarthy makes brief return to help lead Vikings to 20-10 preseason win over Texans
J.J. McCarthy was solid in his brief return for the Vikings, going 4 of 7 for 30 yards while leading a scoring drive in his only series and Minnesota topped the Houston Texans 20-10 on Saturday in the teams' preseason opener. McCarthy, who missed all of his rookie season after tearing the meniscus in his right knee in last year's first preseason game, took the field to a rousing ovation from the home crowd. The first-round pick in last year's NFL draft out of Michigan completed his first four passes, three to Jordan Addison, who made a sliding grab for an 18-yard gain on the third. McCarthy also ran 8 yards for a first down on fourth-and-4 at the Texans 43 to keep alive a 58-yard scoring drive capped by Will Reichard's 48-yard field goal that put the Vikings up 3-0. "It was great to get things done from an operational standpoint," McCarthy said. "There's a lot we can build on off that — a lot more areas we can grow, me specifically, for sure. But I was really happy to string together (a drive) and get some points on the board." Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell also felt good about what he saw from his starting quarterback. "We don't do a lot of game-planning for these games," O'Connell said. "But we also want to give our guys a chance to go out there and have success. So there are going to be some plays where guys have to rise up and make some plays above the scheme, and he did that a couple of times with his legs. "It didn't really feel like he put the ball at harm's risk very much in that sequence of plays." The Texans responded on their own opening possession. Davis Mills, who got the start at quarterback after head coach DeMeco Ryans elected to sit starter C.J. Stroud, marched his team 74 yards in 10 plays to score on a 14-yard touchdown pass to Braxton Berrios that put his team in front 7-3. "I was really pleased with our first offensive group," Ryans said. "The way they stepped out very efficiently. I liked everybody just being very calm and composed. Davis did an excellent job of driving the ball down the field, commanding the huddle, putting the ball in really good placement." McCarthy, meanwhile, was replaced by backup Sam Howell before the Vikings' second possession. Howell played the rest of the first half, finishing 11 of 13 for 105 yards. He led Minnesota to a pair of scores: a 38-yard field goal by Reichard and his own 1-yard touchdown run that gave the Vikings a 13-7 halftime lead. Not all went the Vikings way, however. Wide receiver Rondale Moore, signed this offseason, was carted from the field after suffering what O'Connell said appears to be a serious left knee injury on a punt return early in the second quarter. He'll have an MRI on Sunday. Moore, who missed the entire 2024 season while with Atlanta after injuring a knee in the preseason, was expected to add receiving depth for Minnesota. The Vikings will be without Addison for the first three games of the regular season after he was suspended for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy. "It's heartbreaking," O'Connell said of Moore's injury. "I think anybody in the ballpark (today) could feel the emotion. It's one of the most painful things for me as a head coach. I make a life out of trying to leave others better than I found them, and in that particular situation, there's really nothing you can do." Houston's final two drives ended in interceptions of rookie Max Brosmer by Kahlef Hailassie, sealing a win for the Vikings in McCarthy's first game in almost exactly a year. "It felt amazing being back out there," said McCarthy, whose team has a pair of joint practices with the New England Patriots scheduled for this coming week. "Just really playing football again and being out there with the guys. There's nothing like it. I loved the way we played as a group collectively." Among the several Vikings veterans who didn't play were wide receiver Justin Jefferson, who's still recovering from a mild left hamstring strain he suffered late last month, and offensive tackle Christian Darrisaw, who continues to work his way back from a season-ending knee injury a year ago. Houston running back Nick Chubb, who signed with the team in the offseason, didn't play. He missed practice time during the week after taking a shot to the head. O'Connell said the Vikings also lost rookie center Zeke Correll to what X-rays showed was a right ankle fracture in the second half. Texans: Host the Carolina Panthers next Saturday. Cowboys' Jerry Jones remains cryptic on Micah Parsons' status after star's trade request
The saga between star pass rusher Micah Parsons and the Dallas Cowboys is still ongoing with only a few weeks to go before the start of the 2025 regular season. Parsons requested a trade as he shed light on the lack of movement around contract-extension negotiations between him and the organization. Team owner Jerry Jones has not budged much since Parsons released a lengthy statement on the matter. Jones was asked about the status of Parsons in a radio interview on Saturday. "I'm glad to see he's working out, in shape, and feels great, and so all of that's good, and, I don't have anything to comment on," Jones told 105.3 The Fan. Parsons would likely seek to be paid in the same range as Cleveland Browns' Myles Garrett, who received a massive four-year deal reportedly worth $160 million, or Pittsburgh Steelers' T.J. Watt, who agreed to a three-year deal reportedly worth $123 million. The four-time Pro Bowler has 52.5 sacks and 256 tackles in 63 career games. He requested a trade on Aug. 1. "Yes I wanted to be here. I did everything I could to show that I wanted to be a Cowboy and wear the star on my helmet. I wanted to play in front of the best fans in sports and make this Americas [sic] team once again. The team my pops and I grew up cheering for way up in Harrisburg, PA. Unfortunately, I no longer want to be here," Parsons wrote in a statement. "I no longer want to held to close door negotiations without my agent present. I no longer want shots taken at me for getting injured while laying it on the line for the organization, our fans and my teammates. I no longer want narratives created and spread to the media about me. I had purposely stayed quiet in hopes of getting something done." Jones has told fans "not to lose sleep" over the Parsons drama. Only time will tell if the Cowboys and Parsons can reach a deal before the start of the season.
