Rapper Vedan set to perform at Kerala government event today
IDUKKI: In a notable shift in stance, the Kerala government has decided to reinstate rapper Vedan's programme at the 'Ente Keralam' event in Vazhathope, Idukki, days after cancelling it following his arrest in a drug case.
The move comes amid growing criticism over the aggressive action taken by some forest officials, which both the CPM leadership and Forest Minister A K Saseendran later termed 'overzealous'.
Hirandas Murali, popular as Vedan, was originally scheduled to perform at the 'Ente Keralam' venue on April 29 as part of celebrations marking the fourth anniversary of the state government.
However, his arrest on April 28 for alleged possession of ganja led the Idukki district administration to call off the show. He was arrested again the same day under the Wildlife Protection Act for allegedly wearing a chain with what was suspected to be a leopard's tooth.
The tide turned after the Judicial First Class Magistrate Court in Perumbavoor granted him bail on April 30, citing lack of evidence to support the charges under the Wildlife Protection Act violation.
The court noted that the pendant could not be confirmed as leopard tooth and there was no link to hunting or illegal trade. Following the court's observation, the government rescheduled Vedan's performance for Monday, at 8pm , at the Vazhathope Government Vocational Higher Secondary School ground.

Kozhikode: The death of 15-year-old Anandu, who was electrocuted by a live wire trap at Vazhikkadavu, sparked a political row between UDF and LDF amid Nilambur byelection. UDF blamed the state govt linking the incident to rising man-animal conflicts in the high-range constituency and blocked the state highway at Nilambur on Saturday night in protest. Govindan too echoed Saseendran's views saying the way UDF turned the incident into a political weapon raises suspicion. He added that the phone call records of the accused should be examined. Following the incident, candidates Aryadan Shoukath, M Swaraj, PV Anvar and Mohan George visited Anandu's home. UDF candidate Shoukath said Anandu was a martyr of unaddressed man-animal conflicts in the area and raised suspicion whether the practice of illegally drawing power from KSEB lines to set up traps was being done with its knowledge. Leopard beaten to death after it attacked farmers in Amroha
Bijnor: A four-year-old leopard was beaten to death by villagers in Kutubpur Hamidpur of Amroha district on Saturday after it attacked and injured six farmers working in their fields. The leopard suddenly pounced on Kovin Kumar first and then attacked the others who came to his aid. Angry villagers surrounded the animal and beat it with sticks, causing severe head and neck injuries that turned fatal. Forest and police officials reached the spot and took possession of the carcass, and detained three villagers—Rakesh, Dharamveer and Raju, brother of village pradhan Brijesh. The detentions sparked outrage in the area, and soon a large crowd gathered outside Naugawan Sadat police station and forcibly freed the three detainees. The six injured villagers were admitted to district hospital. Amroha DFO SP Singh said, "The postmortem examination confirmed that the leopard died of injuries to her head, brain and neck from sticks. An FIR has been filed under the Wildlife Protection Act against three named and other unidentified villagers." The accused will be arrested soon, said police.

Class 10 student dies of electrocution, triggers political row in poll-bound Nilambur
A teenager died of electrocution from an illegal wild boar trap at Vazhikadavu here, triggering widespread protests and a political row in bypoll-bound Nilambur. Jithu, a Class 10 student, and three of his friends came into contact with a live wire from an electric fence set up illegally on private land to trap wild boars on Saturday, police said. Though locals rushed them to hospital, Jithu was declared brought dead. Two others were critically injured. The death of the boy has intensified political tensions ahead of the crucial June 19 assembly bypoll in Nilambur. The opposition UDF alleged the boy's death was a "government-sponsored murder," blaming administrative inaction against such illegal traps. State Forest Minister A K Saseendran denied the allegations on Sunday, calling it a "political conspiracy" ahead of the bypoll. The death sparked protests on Saturday night by Congress and IUML workers, who blocked roads and marched to the local police station, clashing with police. BJP workers also staged separate protests, accusing the government of negligence. UDF candidate in Nilambur bypoll Aryadan Shoukath and LDF nominee M Swaraj visited the hospital last night where the teenager's body was kept. Addressing reporters here, Shoukath said the incident was a "state-sponsored murder". He alleged that such illegal electric traps were laid with the knowledge of the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) and so the government could not evade from its responsibility. Swaraj also demanded a comprehensive probe into the incident. Reacting to the incident, Minister Saseendran said there is a deliberate attempt to turn the sentiments of locals against the government and the forest department in the run-up to the bypoll. He added that a comprehensive probe is underway. Terming the incident as "tragic and painful", the minister said a teenager has lost his life and the condition of two others is serious. "The incident happened in a private property. But the owner says that he has not errectd any such illegal fencing there. Local people also said that there was no such fencing till last evening. KSEB officials confirmed that they were unaware about it," he explained. The wildlife department has also not been using electric fencing for long. "So, we cannot rule out the possibility of a political conspiracy behind the incident. Direction has been given given to carry out a comprehensive probe," he said. He wondered how a protest march was organised by the UDF in Malappuram over the incident much before the locals came to know about it last night. He said two people were taken into custody by the police in this regard and their interrogation is going on. Meanwhile, police said a case has been registered into the incident under BNS 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
