So far, ten people have died and nine others have been taken to nearby hospitals with injuries.
The incident took place around 7:30 am when a truck, a van, and a car were crossing the bridge. A part of the structure suddenly gave way, causing the vehicles to fall into the river. Locals rushed to help and called emergency services. Police and disaster response teams quickly reached the site and began rescue efforts.
'A portion of the bridge collapsed suddenly.
Three vehicles that were passing from that stretch fell into the river. We have initiated rescue operations and 10 people have been pulled out so far,' a fire brigade official told PTI.
The bridge, located about 25 km from Vadodara city, is an important route for transport vehicles heading to Saurashtra.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently on a foreign visit, called Gujarat chief minister Bhupendra Patel to take stock of the situation.
He expressed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.
An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the PM's National Relief Fund (PMNRF) has been announced for the families of the deceased, and Rs 50,000 for each injured person.
The Gujarat Congress, meanwhile, has criticised the state government and held it responsible for the collapse.

Kerala Nuns Get Bail In Human Trafficking, Religious Conversion Case In Chhattisgarh

A special NIA court in Chhattisgarh has granted conditional bail to two Kerala nuns and a male companion who were arrested last week on charges of human trafficking and forced religious conversion. Principal District and Sessions Judge Sirajuddin Qureshi granted bail to Sisters Preethi Merry and Vandana Francis of the Assisi Sisters of Mary Immaculate (ASMI), and Sukaman Mandavi, a tribal youth from the state. CPM leader Brinda Karat told NDTV this is a big victory for tribals and adivasi groups that had countered the allegations. She demanded action against Bajrang Dal and Hindu Vahini for filing false complaints. CPIM MP John Brittas said, "It is a victory of the Constitution. It was a false case against two nuns. Our fight will continue to get the FIR quashed." The three of them were arrested on July 25 at the Durg railway station after a complaint by a local Bajrang Dal functionary alleged they were attempting to traffic and convert three tribal girls. The defense lawyer for the nuns, Amrito Das, had argued that the FIR was "absolutely baseless," and noted that the parents of the girls had given statements affirming that their daughters had been practicing Christianity for several years. So there was no question of forced conversion and also that they were adults being taken for work to Agra and they had said they were going voluntarily, so there was no human trafficking. The bail was granted under several conditions. The accused must surrender their passports and furnish a bond of Rs 50,000 each, with two persons acting as sureties. This development comes after a sessions court in Durg had earlier disposed of their bail applications, citing a lack of jurisdiction under the human trafficking section of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and directing them to approach the designated NIA court in Bilaspur. The arrest had triggered widespread protests in Kerala and drew sharp criticism from Church leaders and political parties, including the ruling LDF and the Opposition. The case had also created a rift between the BJP units in Kerala and Chhattisgarh, with Kerala BJP chief Rajeev Chandrasekhar stating that the arrests were a "misunderstanding" and that the Chhattisgarh government would not oppose their bail. The defense lawyer for the nuns, Amrito Das, had argued that the FIR was "absolutely baseless," and noted that the parents of the girls had given statements affirming that their daughters had been practicing Christianity for several years.

'Pak Doesn't Sleep When It Hears Brahmos Missile': PM Modi Praises Op Sindoor

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the world saw the capabilities of India's indigenous weapons during Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 to strike multiple terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam. Addressing a public rally in his parliamentary constituency, Varanasi, PM Modi said India's air defence systems, missiles, and drones proved the strength of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' (self-reliant India). "The Brahmos missiles have instilled fear in the enemies of India," he said in Hindi. "Pakistan does not sleep when it hears the sound of a Brahmos missile," he added. — Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) August 2, 2025 Referring to the newly inaugurated integration and testing facility of BrahMos Aerospace in Lucknow, the Prime Minister said that he is happy that missiles will now be manufactured in Uttar Pradesh. He said the missiles made in Uttar Pradesh will now destroy the terrorists if Pakistan "commits any sin again". PM Modi also slammed the Opposition parties, Congress and the Samajwadi Party, for calling Operation Sindoor a "tamasha" (drama). "Everyone understands that Pakistan is upset. But Congress and the Samajwadi Party cannot handle the pain that Pakistan is going through. Pakistan is crying, and here, Congress and SP are crying, seeing the condition of terrorists," he said. PM Modi said that Congress was "constantly insulting the valour of our forces". "Samajwadi Party leaders were questioning why the Pahalgam terrorists were killed on this particular day? Should I call and ask them before taking any action?" he said, referring to Operation Mahadev, in which three of the terrorists behind the Pahalgam attack were gunned down by security forces this week. PM Modi said his promise to avenge the Pahalgam attack, in which 26 civilians were killed, through Operation Sindoor was fulfilled with the blessings of Lord Shiva. "My heart was filled with sorrow for the 26 people who lost their lives in the Pahalgam terror attack," he said. He said that the "unity of 140 crore countrymen" became the "strength of Operation Sindoor".
