Residents riled over civic body's nonchalance in tackling flooding
Each year, monsoon brings immense losses for the residents, especially those residing near the RuBs. The water from the nala is inundating the streets and entering into houses. The residents of Malakpet, Azampura, Yakutpura, and Talab Katta, residing near the RUBs in the GHMC Charminar zone, have been facing innumerable difficulties during rains. A nala situated beside these four RuBs is resulting in overflow and inundation of the surrounding area. Around three to four feet of rainwater inundate these RUBs and were closed to the traffic.
Several areas, like Talab Katta RuB and its surroundings, Yakutpura, Ganga Nagar, Azampura, and Malakpet, are in waters up to four feet and above in each heavy rain. Also, the RuBs located in Lingampally, Katedan, Mettuguda, Secunderabad, Alugadda Bavi, Bible Track and other under bridges have been inundated in every monsoon, but no permanent solution has been taken by the civic body.
Mohammed Ahmed, a local activist said 'It has been observed that the nalas, which have become narrower owing to haphazard construction activity, now face the real problem even as huge quantities of waste can be seen floating on the surface, causing the inundation of these RuBs and surrounding areas. With no seriousness by the civic body in clearing the debris and desilting nalas, it overflows and inundates at RuB.'
Ahmed said that for the last several years, several projects have been taken up, but only temporary solutions were found by the authorities. 'I fear that the condition of these areas will be the same as in previous years. In recent rains, these RuBs have again inundated at least four feet, and traffic was halted for hours. Traffic was cleared after the water was drained,' said Ahmed.
According to the residents, these RuBs and surrounding areas have been inundated in each monsoon, but no permanent solution has been taken by the civic body. Even during this monsoon, the situation is the same, and we residents are the ones who suffer,' said Chandrashekar, a resident of Chaderghat. In early monsoon heavy rains, the water enters the house which damages the furniture, electronics and other household items, says Shahid Ali another resident.
As a part of the monsoon action plan, the desilting works were completed in these nalas, but the civic body has to desilt the nala in depth so that the water flows freely during heavy downpours. But the GHMC is only doing temporary works by desilting hardly two feet in each nala and keeping the debris aside, which is causing the water to log in RuBs and the localities to be inundated,' emphasised Ahmed.
The local authority said that several works were taken up to solve the inundation issue, however, the RuB falls under both the civic body and railways. The works related to the civic body were completed to ensure water inundation.

Sewer manhole collapses in Old Malakpet
The drain slab that had caved in at Banjara Hills on Tuesday, taking down a tanker along, in the aftermath of the heavy rain on Monday, is a grim reminder about the status of drains in the core part of the capital city. Close on the heels of the incident on Wednesday, one more sewer manhole of the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply & Sewerage Board collapsed at Panchasheela, Old Malakpet. Not very long ago, repeated collapse of another drain at Chaknawadi area of Goshamahal, resulted in heavy losses for small time traders in the area, as a truck and several two wheelers fell into the drain along with the slab. All these instances are indicative of the fact that vital infrastructure is crumbling underneath the blacktop in the city. While hundreds of crores of rupees are being spent on adding to the drain network by way of Strategic Nala Development Programme, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has been ignoring the need for maintenance of the existing storm water drains. The city has a total 1,302 kilometres of drain network, which includes major, medium and minor nalas. Of this, 383 kilometres are major drains. A predominant percentage of these drains falls within the core city, and has aged considerably. 'Most of these drains are over 40 years old, and are in need of repairs. They are all RR masonry [Random Rubble masonry] drains, while the modern ones are of RCC. However, the drain that collapsed in Banjara Hills had its sidewalls intact,' a senior Engineering official from GHMC said. An estimate of ₹68 lakh has been submitted to the zonal commissioner for restoration of the slab, he informed. The drain joins the Bulkapur nala coming from Ahmednagar. The official however admitted that the old drain network is in dilapidated condition, and the issue had been taken cognisance of. In Chaknawadi, the drain was repaired in bits and pieces whenever a collapse incident happened. Of the 360-metre drain, 200 metres has been renovated, and a proposal has been sent to the government for renovation of the remaining part. Continuous flow of sewage even during dry season affects the soundness of the drains, officials say. Methane gas released from the faecal waste over time, results in formation and thriving of corrosive substances, which eat into the masonry and even concrete structures. The drains of the city are also host to a variety of chemical pollutants, which only add to the corrosion. Workers at the collapsed drain in Banjara Hills witnessed rosy tinted effluents rushing through the drain, the source of which was not known. Preliminary enquiries revealed that the colour was owing to a clothes dyeing unit which was letting the waste water into the drain.

‘90 acres of Gurramguda forest polluted'
Hyderabad: The forest department has issued notices to multiple civic agencies, including the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB), the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), and Badangpet Municipality, demanding an immediate halt to the discharge of untreated sewage into the Gurramguda reserved forest area. 'Wildlife vanishing' In separate communications, forest range officer Dr K Srinivas Reddy of Ibrahimpatnam pointed out that drainage water, reportedly flowing from colonies such as Hariharapuram, BN Reddy Nagar, Sripuram Colony, and the Sagar Complex, has turned nearly 90 acres of protected forest land into sewage pools. "This discharge of untreated drainage/sewage water into the protected forest area is causing severe ecological damage," Dr Reddy wrote in a letter addressed to the general manager of HMWSSB. The letter cites violations under multiple environmental and forest laws, including the Forest (Conservation) Act and the Environment (Protection) Act. HYDERABAD: Less than 12 hours after a photo went viral showing two barefoot men striking yoga poses inside a pothole on Zenas International School Road in Hafeezpet, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) filled the long-neglected crater. Dubbed 'Pothole Asana', the protest drew widespread attention and reignited criticism over the civic body's delayed road repairs. The image — showing two citizens in the tree pose inside the pothole — was a satirical jab at the six-month delay in fixing the hazard, despite multiple GHMC inspections.
