30 teams to compete in Junior Mens Hockey Nationals

New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Thirty teams will compete in the 15th Hockey India Junior Men's National Championships, which will be held in the new division-based format in Jalandhar from Tuesday.
The new format has already been introduced and implemented in the senior and sub junior men's and women's and the junior women's national championships earlier this year.
The 30 participating teams are split into Division 'A', Division 'B' and Division 'C', with promotion and relegation adding an extra edge to the competition.
The teams in Division 'A' will be fighting for the title while the top two teams from Divisions 'B' and 'C' will earn promotion to the next tier.
The bottom two sides in Divisions 'A' and 'B' will face relegation to the next division for 2026.
Division 'A' features the country's 12 best junior men's sides, including defending champions Punjab, runners-up Uttar Pradesh and third-placed Haryana.
Pool matches begin on August 16, leading to the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final from August 20 to 23.
Division 'B' will feature league matches only, with the top two ranked teams being promoted to Division 'A' and the last two relegated to Division 'C'. Matches will run from August 12 to 16.
Division 'C' will also be played in a league-format with teams divided into two pools of four teams each, with the top two ranked teams being promoted to Division 'B'.
Across all three divisions, teams will earn 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, 'Junior tournaments are extremely crucial for the future of Indian hockey." 'The young players will learn a lot playing in this format as we will see a different level of competitiveness among teams across all divisions as they battle for promotion and the championship title," he added. Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs in 272 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76, with 32 centuries and 59 fifties, with a best score of 264. Both last played ODIs in the ICC Champions Trophy, which they won. Virat scored 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, with a century against Pakistan and a knock of 84 against Australia in the semifinals being his top contributions. Rohit had a mixed tournament but came through with a title-sealing 76 in the final, ending with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00. The duo has maintained sensational form since 2023, the World Cup year. Virat has scored 1,710 runs in 37 matches and 34 innings at an average of 61.07, striking at above 95, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His best score is 166*. Italian Athlete Dies During World Games In China
Last Updated: Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis collapsed during an orienteering event and passed away four days later. During the ongoing World Games in Chengdu (China), an Italian athlete named Mattia Debertolis has died. The 29-year-old reportedly collapsed during orienteering event last Friday before being found unconscious by the organisers. He passed away four days later on Tuesday with cause of his death still unknown. In a statement, the World Games organisers said, 'Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away." International Orienteering Federation (IOF) president Tom Hollowell issued a statement at the tragic loss of life. 'I am not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with all who mourn Mattia. I encourage the global orienteering community to honor his memory," Hollowell said. Debertolis, part of Italian Orienteering Federation's team at the World Games 2025, was taking part in the men's middle-distance event with temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius on August 8. 'In his childhood and youth years, Mattia was active both in orienteering, cross-country skiing and football. His love for navigating and finding the control points made him prioritize orienteering and pursue a career within elite orienteering," IOF said in a statement.
