New Delhi, Aug 11 (PTI) Thirty teams will compete in the 15th Hockey India Junior Men's National Championships, which will be held in the new division-based format in Jalandhar from Tuesday.
The new format has already been introduced and implemented in the senior and sub junior men's and women's and the junior women's national championships earlier this year.
The 30 participating teams are split into Division 'A', Division 'B' and Division 'C', with promotion and relegation adding an extra edge to the competition.
The teams in Division 'A' will be fighting for the title while the top two teams from Divisions 'B' and 'C' will earn promotion to the next tier.
The bottom two sides in Divisions 'A' and 'B' will face relegation to the next division for 2026.
Division 'A' features the country's 12 best junior men's sides, including defending champions Punjab, runners-up Uttar Pradesh and third-placed Haryana.
Pool matches begin on August 16, leading to the quarterfinals, semifinals and the final from August 20 to 23.
Division 'B' will feature league matches only, with the top two ranked teams being promoted to Division 'A' and the last two relegated to Division 'C'. Matches will run from August 12 to 16.
Division 'C' will also be played in a league-format with teams divided into two pools of four teams each, with the top two ranked teams being promoted to Division 'B'.
Across all three divisions, teams will earn 3 points for a win and 1 point for a draw.
Hockey India President Dilip Tirkey said, 'Junior tournaments are extremely crucial for the future of Indian hockey." 'The young players will learn a lot playing in this format as we will see a different level of competitiveness among teams across all divisions as they battle for promotion and the championship title," he added. Ex-IND Cricketer Opens Pandora's Box On Kohli-Rohit: 'Said Goodbye To Wrong...'

Last Updated: Aakash Chopra suggests Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli should retire from ODIs instead of Tests due to fewer ODI matches. Both have impressive ODI records but may retire soon. Amidst media reports suggesting that stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli may soon retire from ODIs, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra opined that they should have retired from the 50-over format instead of Test cricket, given the current scarcity of ODI matches. Days after skipper Shubman Gill led India to a remarkable 2-2 draw, speculation arose that Rohit and Virat might leave ODIs too, as they are not considered for the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup in South Africa and Namibia scheduled for 2027, unless they play domestic 50-over cricket to demonstrate their match fitness and form. Both cricketers had announced their retirement from Test cricket ahead of India's tour to England in May. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra said, 'The truth is that they have said goodbye to the wrong format. They had left T20Is after winning the T20 World Cup, but the story might have been different had they continued to play Tests and said goodbye to ODIs. India played only six ODIs in 12 months before the Champions Trophy." 'There is a possibility that you might play only six Tests in a year, but even if it is only six Tests, it's 30 days of cricket. If only six ODIs are played, it's just six days of cricket over a period of time. It will be more than 100 days from your last IPL match to the next ODI you will play. You are not playing at all. You are not practicing at all," he added. 'A three-match series gets over in seven to eight days. Then the next one would be after three months. Gaps are just incredibly huge, and you won't play first-class cricket in between. It's true that had they continued playing Test cricket and left ODIs, staying in the groove would have been a lot easier," he said. 'When you have retired from Tests, and ODI cricket is not played much, it is not going to make a lot of sense. So just two months of high-intensity IPL, where you would get to play 14 to 16 innings, and then you would play three matches after six months, and then three matches after another three months. I think it is very, very difficult," Chopra added. What Is Kohli And Rohit's ODI Record? Virat and Rohit are two of the finest ODI players produced by India. Virat has scored 14,181 runs in 302 matches and 290 innings at an average of 57.88, with 51 centuries and 74 fifties. His best score is 183. Rohit has amassed 11,168 runs in 272 matches and 265 innings at an average of 48.76, with 32 centuries and 59 fifties, with a best score of 264. Both last played ODIs in the ICC Champions Trophy, which they won. Virat scored 218 runs in five matches at an average of 54.50, with a century against Pakistan and a knock of 84 against Australia in the semifinals being his top contributions. Rohit had a mixed tournament but came through with a title-sealing 76 in the final, ending with 180 runs at an average of 36.00 and a strike rate of 100.00. The duo has maintained sensational form since 2023, the World Cup year. Virat has scored 1,710 runs in 37 matches and 34 innings at an average of 61.07, striking at above 95, with seven centuries and 10 fifties. His best score is 166*. In 38 ODIs and 37 innings, Rohit has scored 1,714 runs at an average of 48.97, with a strike rate of 117.24, with three centuries and 12 fifties, his best score being 131. Their next ODI assignment is a three-match series against Australia starting on October 19. With three more ODIs scheduled from November to December against South Africa at home, three against New Zealand in January at home, and a summer tour to England for three ODIs in July, fans hope that Rohit and Virat will make the most of these opportunities with their consistency and reflexes to keep their chances of going to the World Cup alive. Italian Athlete Dies During World Games In China

Last Updated: Italian athlete Mattia Debertolis collapsed during an orienteering event and passed away four days later. During the ongoing World Games in Chengdu (China), an Italian athlete named Mattia Debertolis has died. The 29-year-old reportedly collapsed during orienteering event last Friday before being found unconscious by the organisers. He passed away four days later on Tuesday with cause of his death still unknown. In a statement, the World Games organisers said, 'Despite receiving immediate expert medical care at one of China's leading medical institutions, he passed away." International Orienteering Federation (IOF) president Tom Hollowell issued a statement at the tragic loss of life. 'I am not able to adequately describe in words the unfathomable depth of sadness in this tragic loss of life. Our thoughts are with all who mourn Mattia. I encourage the global orienteering community to honor his memory," Hollowell said. Debertolis, part of Italian Orienteering Federation's team at the World Games 2025, was taking part in the men's middle-distance event with temperatures rising above 30 degrees Celsius on August 8. 'In his childhood and youth years, Mattia was active both in orienteering, cross-country skiing and football. His love for navigating and finding the control points made him prioritize orienteering and pursue a career within elite orienteering," IOF said in a statement. 'Together with IWGA and the LOC in Chengdu, IOF will continue to support the family of Mattia Debertolis and has no additional comments at this time," it added. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Rajasthan Women's T20 Championship: Sirohi Team All-Out For 4 Runs, Selectors Under Fire

Last Updated: During a match, Rajasthan's Sirohi women's team was dismissed for four runs against Sikar in the Women's Senior T20 Championship Deepening rifts within Rajasthan cricket have begun spilling over onto the field, with the latest embarrassment coming in the ongoing Women's Senior T20 Championship. On Monday, during the match in Jaipur between Sikar and Sirohi, the Sirohi women's team was bundled out for just four runs, two of which came from extras, in one of the most lopsided contests in recent memory. The performance was nothing short of disastrous where 10 Sirohi batters were dismissed without scoring, while the only player to get off the mark managed just two runs. The meagre total quickly reignited debate over team selection, with critics openly questioning whether the selectors or the players should bear the blame. The incident has intensified scrutiny on the Rajasthan Cricket Association (RCA), which has been mired in factional battles for over a year. Infighting, legal disputes, and power struggles have reportedly trickled down to district associations, affecting both resources and player development. Insiders allege that selections are increasingly based on influence rather than merit, with the Sirohi debacle serving as a glaring example of the consequences.
