‘Have culled 2,800 stray dogs during municipality tenure'—JD(S) MLC boasts in Karnataka assembly
The statement was made Tuesday in which he went on to assert that he was ready to go to jail to protect children who were targeted by stray dogs.
Bengaluru: Janata Dal (Secular) MLC S.L.Bhojegowda has claimed that he helped cull 2,800 stray dogs and buried them under trees when he was head of the municipal body in Karnataka's Chikmagalur.
The statement has drawn backlash in the backdrop of the Supreme Court's order to shift all stray dogs to shelters in Delhi-National Capital (NCR) region triggering anger and debate across the country.
On Wednesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) B.R.Gavai said that he would look into the issue after he was apprised of the order to shift all stray dogs in Delhi-NCR region to shelters within the next eight weeks.
Meanwhile, Bhojegowda suggested that 10 dogs must be released into every animal lover's home after the government expressed helplessness.
'We are witnessing dog bite cases daily and victims are being hospitalised. If someone opposes removal of stray dogs from the streets, let the government leave a few dogs in their compounds to make them understand the reality,' said Bhojegowda. 'What will they do if a stray bites their children?' he said.
The JD(S) MLC also suggested that the Karnataka government file a petition with the SC to reconsider its earlier orders that only allowed for vaccination and neutering of stray dogs.
'Take a decision and put a petition in the Supreme Court, let's see. Let it be the first time that any state has asked the SC this,' he said.
Several legislators from across parties were heard chipping into the debate, backing Bhojegowda, and mocking the Karnataka government for giving 'Biryani Bhagya' for dogs.
The reference was to a July order by the Bengaluru city corporation that unveiled a Rs 2.88 crore annual programme to feed chicken rice to around 5,000 stray dogs. This would amount to 367 grams of chicken rice per day at a cost of Rs 22 per dog, costing around Rs 36 lakh for each of the eight zones in the IT capital.
Like Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, who made a passionate plea against the SC order, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, too, took the same line on the matter.
'Treating stray dogs as a nuisance to be 'removed' is not governance – it is cruelty. Humane societies find solutions that protect people and animals. Sterilisation, vaccination, and community care work. Fear-driven measures only create more suffering, not safety,' the CM posted on 'X'.

SC order on Bihar voter roll revision vindicates concerns: CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya
Patna, CPI Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya on Thursday said the Supreme Court's interim order on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in Bihar has "vindicated" the concerns raised by civil society and opposition parties since the controversial drive began. SC order on Bihar voter roll revision vindicates concerns: CPI(ML) leader Dipankar Bhattacharya In a statement issued after the SC order, Bhattacharya said, "Finally, we have an interim order from the apex court in Bihar's SIR case. The order rejects the EC's stubborn refusal to heed the suggestions already made by the Supreme Court and addresses three core concerns about the practical implementation of the drive. This interim order vindicates some of the basic objections and apprehensions raised from day one since the sudden launch of the SIR". Earlier in the day, a bench comprising Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi directed the EC to publish the names of the 65 lakh voters deleted from the list, along with reasons for deletion, to ensure transparency. The bench passed the order while hearing pleas challenging the June 24 EC decision to conduct the SIR of the electoral rolls in Bihar. "The issue of legality of SIR is yet to be determined by the Supreme Court. The interim order asks the EC to come clean about all the deletions with specific assigned reasons, make the information public and accessible to all electors, not routed through Booth Level Agents of political parties, and accept Aadhaar as a valid supporting document", Bhattacharya said Bhattacharya is one of the petitioners who moved the top court, seeking direction for quashing the EC order. "What happens to the 3.5 million migrant workers whose names have been removed? For people like Mintu Paswan, declared dead by the SIR, this could be a second lease of electoral life," he added. He called for the EC to take responsibility for correcting its errors, suggesting the establishment of grievance redressal camps at booth and block levels. "The scale of exclusion is massive, time is short, and most electors have been penalised without fault. "The onus of correction should also be put on the perpetrators of error. That is the principle of fairness, natural justice and transparency that the EC had invoked as guiding tenets for the SIR in its counter affidavit filed before the SC on July 21", he said. MP CM Mohan Yadav flags off 1200 FRVs for new Dial 112 emergency services
Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh) [India], August 14 (ANI): Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav flagged off 1200 First Response Vehicles (FRVs) for newly integrated emergency response service Dial-112 for the districts from Bhopal on Thursday, stated an official Yadav launched the vehicles from the program organised at Kushabhau Thakre Auditorium in the state capital. The state government has allocated over Rs 1,500 crore for these vehicles, reaffirming that citizens' safety remains its top priority. Addressing the occasion, the CM says that the police play a vital role in maintaining social order and extended congratulations to Madhya Pradesh Police on the launch of Dial 112, calling it a new initiative to enhance police responsiveness. 'This emergency number will become a cornerstone of a society's safety & security ecosystem, serving as both a promise of swift police response and a commitment to assistance for the people of the state," he said. The new Dial 112 will replace the old Dial 100 services which have already been adopted by other states, including Uttar Pradesh. Through its vigilance and efficiency, Dial 100 has ensured the safety of 2.23 lakh elderly citizens, more than 19 lakh women, 1,300 newborns and reunited 23,000 missing children with their families — a significant achievement for the MP Police, the release added. The Chief Minister further says that efforts are underway to strengthen surveillance by integrating cameras installed at public places with other monitoring systems. The government is also attentive to the needs of police personnel working in difficult conditions. Cultural and historical gateways are being developed on main roads of towns and cities, reflecting local heritage while also aiding security and making all-weather duty easier for personnel. Technology has brought major changes to policing in the state, including the introduction of e-summons via video calls and the internet — a process in which Madhya Pradesh is a national leader, with other states following its Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana called the launch of Dial 112 a historic occasion. He recalled that on MP Foundation Day 2015, the Dial 100 service was introduced in the state, which has since assisted lakhs of citizens through 1,000 vehicles. Under CM Yadav's direction, 200 more vehicles have been added, bringing the total to 1,200 FRVs, all equipped with state-of-the-art Dial-112 service will bring together multiple emergency numbers under a single helpline. The integrated number will cover police (100), health/ambulance (108), fire services (101), women's helpline (1090), cybercrime (1930), railway assistance (139), highway accident response (1099), disaster management (1079), and women and child helplines (181, 1098). Declared dead by EC, Bihar man visits CEO's office to say he is alive
Patna, Aug 14 (PTI) A resident of Bhojpur district in Bihar on Thursday called on the Chief Electoral Officer of the state to plead that he was alive. Mintu Paswan, who was earlier this week produced before the Supreme Court, was taken to the CEO's office by a delegation of CPI(ML) Liberation. 'I don't know whether I was seen as an apparition by the officials. The fact remains that I have been distraught to learn that I have been declared dead in the special intensive revision (SIR)," Paswan told reporters here. He alleged that no booth level officer (BLO) had visited his home. CPI(ML)-L secretary Kunal, who was present on the occasion, said, 'Anomalies of this type are the very reason behind our general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya opposing SIR in the Supreme Court. Mintu is being asked to fill up Form 06, meant for registration of new voters, even though he has voted in the past". The CEO has asked him to hand over the form to the BLO concerned, who already stands exposed for a goof-up, the Left leader asserted. 'He (the BLO) has confessed to his mistake and told the CEO that Mintu's name got struck off instead of another person," said Kunal. Replying to a query from journalists, he said, 'We have identified altogether 21 people, so far, who have been wrongfully declared dead, leading to deletion of their names. Of them, 10 were produced before the Supreme Court. He added that the apex court was convinced of the mistake in only two instances – one was of Mintu and the other was that of a woman in Raghopur. Incidentally, Raghopur is the assembly seat of the leader of the opposition Tejashwi Yadav, whose party RJD is an alliance partner of the Left. 'We do not know how effective the intervention by the Supreme Court is going to be. The Election Commission has been brazening it out, falsely claiming that political parties are not coming up with any claims or objections. We shall keep helping as many people as possible in getting their names included in the voters' list," Kunal said.
