Washington Commanders' Star Thinking of Skipping Training Camp

Washington Commanders' Star Thinking of Skipping Training Camp

Yahoo16-07-2025
After a 12-win season that resulted in a trip to the NFC Conference Championship, the Washington Commanders should be feeling supremely confident heading into a new season. Yet, some internal drama is hanging an unfortunate cloud over the organization instead.
Earlier this week, Terry McLaurin admitted to being 'pretty frustrated' with the Commanders over their failure to negotiate a new contract with the two-time Pro Bowl receiver. While McLaurin's comments sparked immediate Commanders trade rumors, he insists that he'd prefer to stick around in D.C.
However, that doesn't mean McLaurin is ready to forgive and forget. According to Bleacher Report's James Palmer, now McLaurin is debating whether he should even attend the Commanders' training camp.
'He's not sure if he's gonna show up for camp or not. He didn't participate in any of the offseason activities… He hasn't gotten there yet, and I think this is important: he said, 'I'm gonna see how the rest of the week plays out.' What usually drives a lot of contracts [is] deadlines, and a deadline could be the start of training camp.'
Bleacher Report's James Palmer on Terry McLaurin
Veterans report to Washington's training camp on July 22, so we should have an answer on McLaurin soon enough. Who knows? Maybe the Commanders will find a way to reach a new extension with their leading receiver before camp even opens.
For now, McLaurin is set to have a $25.5 million cap hit in 2025, which is the final year of his contract. He'd understandably like to get a new deal done, long before he has a chance to hit the open market next offseason.

Commanders keeping Brian Robinson Jr. out vs. Bengals as trade rumors swirl

Brian Robinson Jr.'s days with the Commanders appear to be numbered. The team and Robinson have mutually agreed that the running back won't play in Monday night's preseason game against the Bengals, per multiple reports, as trade rumors swirl around the 26-year-old. It's possible that the Commanders would cut Robinson if they can't trade him, ESPN reports. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn (l.) and running back Brian Robinson (r.) The Washington Post via Getty Im Robinson, a third-round pick by Washington in 2022 who's entering the final year of his rookie contract, had 799 yards rushing and eight touchdowns in 14 games last season, but it seems like offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury may want to move in a different direction in the backfield. Veteran Austin Ekeler is No. 2 on the Commanders' depth chart behind Robinson. They also have Jeremy McNichols, Chris Rodriguez Jr. and rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt. The Commanders selected Croskey-Merritt, who goes by Bill, in the seventh round out of Arizona, and the speedster has been a standout during training camp. 'I like the group we have; there's no doubt Bill's had some good flashes for a young guy,' Kingsbury said earlier this month. Ekeler had 367 yards rushing with four touchdowns and added 35 catches for 366 yards across 12 games last season. Expectations are high for the Commanders in 2025 after a surprise 12-5 season under new head coach Dan Quinn and rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels ended with an NFC Championship game loss to the rival Eagles. AP The team is currently stuck in a contract standoff with wide receiver Terry McLaurin, and he is currently sidelined as a result. Washington acquired receiver Deebo Samuel from the 49ers in March.

Stirring trade speculation, Brian Robinson Jr. to sit preseason game

Running back Brian Robinson Jr. will not play in Monday night's preseason game against the Cincinnati Bengals as a healthy scratch, a person familiar with the situation said, a sign the Washington Commanders may be on the verge of cutting ties with him heading into the final year of his rookie contract. Robinson is the starter on Washington's unofficial depth chart, although the team is expected to use a committee system and heavily rely on veteran Austin Ekeler, even with Robinson in the fold. Robinson led Washington running backs with 799 rushing yards and eight touchdowns last year. The Commanders would be challenged to replace the 6-foot-1, 225-pounder's physicality, but he produces few explosive runs. His 4.3 yards per carry ranked behind reserves Chris Rodriguez Jr. and Jeremy McNichols last year. Robinson had 187 carries in 14 games last season, a total he would be unlikely to surpass surrounded by a deep stable. Robinson may want a situation likely to give him more touches heading into free agency. If the Commanders dealt Robinson, they would be unlikely to receive a significant return. But they would be trading from an area of depth. Ekeler is a multipurpose weapon. Rodriguez and McNichols can replicate most of Robinson's skill set. Rookie Jacory Croskey-Merritt, a seventh-round pick, has been a training camp sensation owing to his vision and elusiveness. Even down-roster backs Kazmeir Allen and Demetric Felton have performed well this summer. 'All six or seven guys in there have a place in this league,' offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said Friday. 'They all have dynamic traits, all have things they do really well and guys when they had their opportunity have played at a high level.' Kingsbury then praised Rodriguez, McNichols, Allen and Croskey-Merritt by name. When asked later about Robinson, he praised the fourth-year veteran's bruising style. 'When you put the pads on and you really practice full speed is when he really shows up,' Kingsbury said. 'I thought he had his best practice against New England when we did the competition versus them before the game. And just a guy who keeps getting better in our system.' Robinson had 36 carries for 129 yards and two touchdowns — both against Detroit — across three playoff games last season.
