Yes, ‘ARC Raiders' Makes ‘Marathon' Look Bad
It's an unproven trend at this point, but the new race toward live multiplayer games appears to be the genre of extraction shooters, and this week brought an unusual situation with two upcoming 2025 extraction games both running Closed Alphas and so far, eliciting different reactions.
Those two games, as you can guess, are Bungie's Marathon and Embark Studio's ARC Raiders, both entries in the extraction genre that are allegedly being released in 2025. Marathon has a date, September 23, but as of now ARC does not.
There's no getting around it. The reaction to the Marathon Alpha has mostly been mixed to underwhelming. The initial reaction to the ARC Raiders Alpha has visibly skewed more positive. So what's going on?
Simply put, ARC Raiders is a much more traditional extraction shooter in the vein of Tarkov, but at least somewhat more accessible and better-looking, given it's a 2025 release.
It's a Fallout-esque concept of scavenging a ruined wasteland populated by hostile robots and other players. At its core, you skulk around, harvest materials and weapons, and attempt to extract (by going down, not up), either avoiding or killing enemies along the way. Or being killed, of course.
It's got all the traditional extraction-y things. Custom characters, crafting, proximity chat, a home base of sorts, and it just…plays much more like a traditional extraction shooter with its grounded combat. Add in some great visuals and truly fantastic sound design, and it's not a mystery why this positive reception is occurring.

Marathon
Marathon has ditched a lot of this in an attempt to be unique, but in many ways that doesn't feel like it's the case, taking out hardcore elements extraction players want, while also perhaps not being all that accessible to the wider playerbase they want to attract.
The opposite is true here. Hero characters, not custom ones. No proximity chat, no crafting and importantly, no Solos at launch, which is something ARC Raiders does have. Community conversations with Bungie are not terribly promising, saying they'll get around to things like proximity chat and Solos eventually, but not for launch, as neither are an urgent priority according to them.
The end result here is an odd mix of traditional extraction elements, slow moving looting and stamina roadblocks, but paired with often Apex-like firefights with less mobility. It often pairs uncomfortably.
The Marathon Alpha feels less polished and more feature-light. All the claims of 'it's early, it's a Closed Alpha' don't exactly match up with the fact that ARC is also doing a Closed Alpha which seems more substantive and finished, and is likely to be out a good bit after Marathon, if not pushed to 2026. But Marathon launches in six months.

The expectations are also not comparable. Marathon has been in development for six years and this will be Sony's biggest upcoming live service game after a string of cancellations and failures. And of course its famed shooter-maker Bungie's new IP after massive hits Halo and Destiny spanning 20+ years.
ARC's Embark has the same amount of devs in the entire studio as are working on Marathon at Bungie, around 300, but a portion of those are managing The Finals, the studio's other multiplayer game that may not be the talk of the town these days, but boasts a consistent playercount, which many may not realize.
The reception here has almost been night and day. There's no telling if ARC will for sure be a hit or if Marathon will for sure be a failure. It's not that simple. But observing how this has gone, it's impossible not to compare the two and say this has been a much better week for ARC.

Each day's game of NYT Connections goes live at midnight local time. Before we get to today's Connections hints and answers, here are Wednesday's: Hey there, Connectors! Today's NYT Connections hints and answers for Thursday, August 21 are coming right up. How To Play Connections Connections is a free, popular New York Times daily word game. You get a new puzzle at midnight every day. You can play on the NYT's website or Games app. You're presented with a grid of 16 words. Your task is to arrange them into four groups of four by figuring out the links between them. The groups could be things like items you can click, names for research study participants or words preceded by a body part. There's only one solution for each puzzle, and you'll need to be careful when it comes to words that might fit into more than one category. You can shuffle the words to perhaps help you see links between them. Each group is color coded. The yellow group is usually the easiest to figure out, blue and green fall in the middle, and the purple group is usually the most difficult one. The purple group often involves wordplay. Select four words you think go together and press Submit. If you make a guess and you're incorrect, you'll lose a life. If you're close to having a correct group, you might see a message telling you that you're one word away from getting it right, but you'll still need to figure out which one to swap. I have to admit, I was worried for my streak when I drank in this grid. The TELETUBBY red herring was fun though (DIPSY and LA-LA are both characters in that show). But after seeing NEVER NEVER, my brain instantly went to "land," as in the place where Peter Pan lives. DREAM, FANTASY and LA-LA were obvious partners for that, and thus I had the greens. The yellows were straightforward enough too, I felt. I figured that RADIO TOWER, SATELLITE DISH and TELETUBBY all had something to do with TVs or telecommunications. I wasn't sure what would match up with them. But as I considered the rest of the words more closely, I realized that an INSECT has antennae like those objects, so that had to be the one I was looking for. That left the purples, which became pretty clear to me thanks to GOOGLE and YANKEE. A CHEESE Doodle is a cheese puff snack. I'd never heard of a DIPSY doodle which, according to Merriam-Webster, is a term meaning "artfully deceptive or shady manipulation," among other things. I do love GOOGLE Doodles, which appear on the Google homepage to commemorate a special event or moment in history. "YANKEE Doodle" is a nursery rhyme. It's also a Thursday so I feel like you might need to hear something a bit energizing. I'm not actually sure where the original version of "Infinity" is from. Some fans say it was recorded during the sessions for the band's self-titled 1998 debut. A re-recorded version appeared on some versions of 2005's Lullabies to Paralyze as a bonus track. In any case, it's a fantastic, stompy rock and roll song that would have fit right into the Rated R/Songs for the Deaf era. I love the way it explodes into the chorus: Have a great day! This Is How Destiny 2's ‘Dead Weeks' Will Work Now, It Seems
In the wake of Destiny 2's profitable Solstice event, so profitable I'm not sure Bungie entirely thought it through, it seemed like going back to the normal grind was going to be a slog. And while that still may be true, at reset, Bungie announced something that was at the very least eyebrow-raising. At Tuesday reset, Bungie revealed that this week, special weapon damage and ammo drops have been increased in Portal activities. Cool, great, we've seen things like 25% surges before and such for various specials, so whatever. Not whatever, not whatever at all. As the in-game pop-up says, the damage increase here for all special weapons is double. They will do twice as much damage, and if you build into ammo even a little bit, with that extra boost my guess is you'll practically be using these as a primary. That was sort of viable for some weapons before, but it may be true for most of them now. This shines a specific spotlight on a weapon like Mint Retrograde, the brand-new rocket pulse rifle that is already like a heavy weapon that uses special ammo. It's hard to take off at all and now it's flat-out twice as good. Also in the same breath you can cite Choir of One, the hugely powerful special auto rifle that even with recent ammo reserve nerfs, is still more or less a primary. Now, double damage and more ammo. Ridiculous. There are weird ebbs and flows with deltas where 260 is easy, then 280 is hard, then 300 is easy again. Now, in Grandmaster, I'm not finding anything's that difficult at all, so this is just icing. The exception here would be Mythic Kepler missions which have enemies that are so overly obnoxiously stuffed with health that this double damage may make things actually feel vaguely normal. The main Portal issue here remains rewards versus time, where it's not worth running nearly anything but Solo Ops the majority of the time for max rewards. And now that Solstice is gone, getting lots of quality loot has been cut by probably 90% instantly, given how rewarding that event was. So, double damage specials will be fun, but the main issues with The Portal are still in place. This does give us a glimpse of what it seems Destiny 2 has in store for future 'dead' weeks, in this case a spell after a big event ends and another starts. And it also shows they're willing to go much further than we've seen in the past, and I really cannot remember a damage surge to this degree that wasn't an actual bug. So, what else do they got? Obviously, you could run the same modifier for primary or heavy weapons. Double drops seems like an extremely easy one which they have done before plenty of times, but it's even more relevant for the Portal now. I'd love one that gave us 80% shorter ability cooldowns or something like that. But the point is, they appear to be willing to finally take some very big swings when it comes to mixing things up, even if there isn't all that much content to mix up in the first place. Chris Martin addresses couple from Coldplay concert jumbotron scandal
Chris Martin is setting the record straight on the "internationally massive scandal" that emerged from that Coldplay concert jumbotron "debacle" that took the internet by storm. During the jumbotron portion of the Music of the Spheres tour concert in Kingston upon Hull's Craven Park in England on Aug. 19, the frontman pushed back against the "kiss cam" headlines about a tech CEO who resigned from his role after appearing to have an affair with a colleague. "I'm going to say this once and once only. It's not, never will be, and never was a kiss cam. … We put one couple and you're branded a kiss cam for the rest of your life. It's unbelievable," Martin said, according to fans' videos from the show. "This is called a jumbotron, and we've done this for a long, long time," the singer continued. "We pick people out to say hello. And sometimes they turn up to become an internationally massive scandal, sure. But most of the time we're just trying to say hello to some ... people, that's all!" As Martin wrapped his public service announcement, he shared a sweet message to the people who were caught canoodling on July 16. "Anyway, we send pure love to those people, and I wish them so well," he told the crowd. Chris Martin calls CEO controversy a 'debacle' This wasn't the only time Martin brought up the incident since the band's return to the U.K. on tour. When introducing the jumbotron portion of the concert in which "we'll try to say hello to some of you on camera," the crowd erupted in knowing laughter as Martin chuckled, according to another video. "You were at that Boston gig! OK, well, thank you for coming again after that debacle," Martin said in reaction to a fan's sign, according to videos and reports from the band's first night in Craven Park on Aug. 18. "We've been doing this a long time, and it's only recently that it became a … Yeah. So," Martin added. "Life throws you lemons and you've got to make lemonade." Coldplay wrapped its North American leg of the long-running tour in Miami Gardens on July 27 and took a three-week break before launching into its final leg in the U.K. What happened with Astronomer CEO Andy Byron? Martin's comments come a month after he offered commentary during the band's July 16 show at Gillette Stadium that turned uncomfortable after a camera operator broadcast a couple embracing, only for the two to conceal themselves. The woman hid her face as the man ducked down. "Come on, you're OK!" Martin told the couple before quipping, "Uh oh. Either they're having an affair or they're just very shy." Following the viral scandal that prompted internet sleuths to identify those seen in the footage, New York tech company Astronomer said it had placed CEO Andy Byron on leave on July 18. The next day, on July 19, the company posted on X and LinkedIn that Byron "has tendered his resignation, and the Board of Directors has accepted." "As stated previously, Astronomer is committed to the values and culture that have guided us since our founding," Astronomer's statement reads. "Our leaders are expected to set the standard in both conduct and accountability, and recently, that standard was not met." After widespread criticism for how the company reacted to the controversy, Astronomer released a tongue-in-cheek video with "temporary spokesperson" Gwyneth Paltrow, Martin's ex-wife, in an effort to rehabilitate its image.
