Steelers countdown to kickoff — No. 26: a history of the number and who wore it best
The Steelers countdown to kickoff is here — and we're at 26 days until Pittsburgh faces off against the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. In the spirit of the countdown, we're taking a look at the history of No. 26 and the players who wore it best. Current Steelers No. 26 wearer: CB Brandin Echols Signing with Pittsburgh on a two-year deal this past March, CB Brandin Echols is the current No. 26 on the Steelers roster. He recently proved why he belongs on this great 2025 Steelers defense with a fantastic training camp performance and a preseason outing against the Jaguars last Saturday — practically cementing his place on the 53-man roster this season. Last five Steelers to wear No. 26: Best No. 26 in Steelers history: CB Rod Woodson There is no debating this selection — the best Steeler to ever wear No. 26 is CB Rod Woodson. Selected with the 10th overall pick in the first round of the 1987 NFL Draft, Woodson brought a decade of dominance to the Steel City — snagging 38 interceptions, the fourth most all time as a Steeler. His five pick-sixes are tied for the most all time by a Steeler — a true playmaker in Pittsburgh's secondary. In his 17-year career, Woodson was named to 11 Pro Bowls, six First-Team All-Pro selections, and three Second-Team All-Pro selections. He was named the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 1993 and made the NFL 1990s All-Decade Team, the NFL 75th Anniversary All-Time Team, the NFL 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, the Pittsburgh Steelers All-Time Team, the Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Honor, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2009. A true Steelers legend — and ultimately the best wearer of No. 26 in Pittsburgh. For up-to-date Steelers coverage, follow us on X @TheSteelersWire and give our Facebook page a like.

Oklahoma Sooners miss out on 2026 4-star wide receiver
The Oklahoma Sooners missed out on another blue-chip wide receiver prospect when four-star talent Davian Groce committed to Florida on Monday evening. The Sooners still have just one wide receiver committed to the 2026 recruiting class, four-star prospect Daniel Odom. In recent months, the Sooners were spurned by Jordan Clay, who committed to Baylor, and Dallas Dickerson, who landed with the Kentucky Wildcats. Although they've added a pair of dynamic tight ends in Tyler Ruxer and Ryder Mix, wide receiver is still a little light compared to previous classes. Oklahoma has six wide receivers currently on the roster from the 2024 and 2025 recruiting classes. Zion Kearney, Ivan Carreon, and Elijah Thomas have been making noise in fall camp and could be in line for increased opportunities this fall. They also have 2024 signees Zion Ragins and K.J. Daniels, along with 2025's Emmanuel Choice, in the mix for playing time. Beyond that, the Sooners have a number of veteran wide receivers on the roster with multiple years of eligibility in Javonnie Gibson, Jayden Gibson, Isaiah Sategna, JerMichael Carter, and Jacob Jordan. So while the team would have liked to have a player with Groce's ability, they still have quite a bit of good depth at the position to build out the wide receiver depth chart over the next couple of years. In addition to Ruxer and Mix, the Sooners have talented skill players like quarterback Bowe Bentley and running back De'Zephen Walker committed in the cycle. Though Oklahoma hasn't been able to land a wide receiver to pair with Odom, look for general manager Jim Nagy, offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle, and wide receivers coach Emmitt Jones to continue to look for talent to add to the Sooners 2026 recruiting class. Robbie Brewer, veteran race car driver, dies after NC crash
As most people have heard by now I lost my dad Robbie Brewer last night. He was loved by so many and for sure left his... Veteran race car driver Robbie Brewer, 53, died following a crash during a race Aug. 9 at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina – his daughter confirmed in a social media post. Courtney Marquette wrote that her father was a mentor and best friend to her in a tribute posted to Facebook on the morning of Aug. 10. 'There wasn't much my dad couldn't fix/do when it came to his cars & racing was his absolute life which was no secret to anyone,' Marquette wrote. 'He left this world doing what he loved but it was just way way too soon.' FloRacing reported that Brewer's car veered towards the outside wall in the center of turns three and four with four laps remaining in a race in the Sportsman division. 'Unfortunately, I had a very direct line of sight into Brewer's vehicle,' Tom Radulovic, who was in the stadium as a fan when the crash occurred, told the Winston-Salem Journal. 'When they put him on the stretcher, I was able to see his hands, looking for that little wave athletes often give. There was no movement. My heart sank.' Bowman Gray Stadium said in a statement provided to the Journal and the Associated Press that Brewer was taken to an area hospital following 'an on-track medical incident.' 'Robbie was a talented and passionate racer, and highly respected competitor among his peers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Robbie's family and friends at this time,' the statement reads. USA TODAY has reached out to the track for the statement and did not receive an immediate response. The Journal reported that Brewer's death was the first at the track since 2002. Driver Brad Lewis, whose race shop is close to where Brewer lived, told the Journal that Brewer was 'like a big brother' and added that he was 'a wheelman through and through.' 'I'm bet everybody in that pit area has a Robbie story and that's a testament to what he meant to that place and to all of us who compete over there,' Lewis said. Randy Smith, who has worked at the stadium for 16 years and was the track's chief flagman Saturday night, told the newspaper that, 'I don't think there is one person that can say anything bad about Robbie.' Brewer was an 11-time winner in the Sportsman division at Bowman Gray and made 311 career starts at the historic stadium across all divisions, according to FloRacing. The racing outlet noted that Brewer was twice a 602 Modified Tour champion and a 602 Super Limited (Late Model) Series champion. Marquette said in her tribute that her father had 'a smile that was contagious' and an offbeat sense of humor.
