Arizona Cardinals CB Will Johnson, not DL Water Nolen, projected to make All-Rookie Team NFL.com projected the full All-Rookie team for 2025. The Cardinals had one draft pick included but not their top pick.
As we wait for the start of training camps next month and see this year's rookie class in action, not only for the Arizona Cardinals but the entire league, we can project who we think will be the best first-year players this coming season.
NFL.com's Gennaro Filice projected the 2025 NFL All-Rookie Team and one of the Cardinals' top draft picks is expected to make an impact.
Who makes it?
It isn't defensive lineman Walter Nolen, the Cardinals' first-round selection. It is cornerback Will Johnson, their second-round pick.
As NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported during Johnson's draft slide, the cornerback's knee was red-flagged for longevity concerns during the combine. But I'm not here to project which players will make it to their second contract -- I'm trying to identify who'll thrive in their first season. And by that criterion, Johnson is a prime candidate. A highly pedigreed cover man with prototypical size and a mature game, the Michigan product projects as a Day 1 starter in Arizona. And his instinctive ball-hawking feels like a perfect fit in the Cardinals' zone-heavy defense.
Johnson does have a chance to be a Day 1 starter. It isn't a lock, but with Sean Murphy-Bunting's season-ending offseason knee injury, Johnson now will compete with 2024 second-round pick Max Melton and third-year pro Star Thomas for the outside cornerback snaps.
Was Nolen snubbed?
Perhaps, but the two picks for the interior defenders were Mason Graham of the Cleveland Browns and Derrick Harmon of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both will be Day 1 starters and get significant snaps.
That might not be the case for Nolen and the Cardinals. Their defensive line room is loaded. He will play, but he will not get the snaps that Graham or Harmon do when he has Dalvin Tomlinson, Calais Campbell, Justin Jones, Bilal Nichols and 2024 first-round pick Darius Robinson in the same room as him.
A dark horse potentially is linebacker Cody Simon, drafted in the fourth round. He has a chance to be the Cardinals' starting 'Mike' inside linebacker. If he beats out Akeem Davis-Gaither for the job, he could pile up stats.
Johnson, though, makes sense. Hopefully, he can be as good as he was in college and stay healthy.

Chicago White Sox drop 7th straight with 5-4 loss to St. Louis Cardinals in Game 1 of doubleheader
Third baseman Miguel Vargas and starter Erick Fedde are linked as part of last year's three-team trade. The Sox sent Fedde and outfielder Tommy Pham to the St. Louis Cardinals and got Vargas as part of a package from the Dodgers while sending reliever Michael Kopech to Los Angeles. Vargas faced Fedde in a big spot during Game 1 of Thursday's doubleheader at Rate Field. The teams were tied, and the Sox had a runner on third after Andrew Benintendi's one-out triple in the fifth inning. Vargas lined a single back up the middle and Benintendi scored to put the Sox ahead. But they couldn't hold the lead, eventually falling 5-4 in the opener. The Cardinals tied it in the sixth, only for the Sox to go-ahead again in the bottom of the inning thanks to a two-run home run from Michael A. Taylor. The Cardinals responded with a three-run eighth — capped by a go-ahead RBI single from pinch hitter Andrew Benintendi's Michael A. TaylorYohel Pozo. The Sox have lost seven straight. They are 4-20 in one-run games. 'Got to find a way,' manager Will Venable said of another one-run loss. 'Credit to the guys for being in this spot for playing so many close games. Now we have to make that one play, one pitch, one hit to get over the hump. We have to keep going.' Starter Sean Burke kept the Sox in the game early when it could have gotten out of hand. The Cardinals loaded the bases with no outs in the first. Burke limited them to one run in the inning, a Willson Contreras sacrifice fly to left. 'Just going into the mindset of not trying to strike everybody out, still just approaching the quality pitches, being smart with what I'm doing pitch-selection-wise,' Burke said of the first inning. 'Those situations, if you can get out of that with one run, take that as a win and then kind of build better momentum going forward.' He did just that, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with seven strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings. 'I felt good overall,' Burke said. 'Thought the curveball was good today. Fastball felt good. I thought I mixed some good two-seams to get guys off the four-seam. Slider felt good. I feel like there was a couple sliders I threw a little too middle, but other than that, felt pretty good with everything.' Fedde, who went 7-4 with a 3.11 ERA in 21 starts for the Sox last season before being traded, allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and two walks in five innings. Vargas singled against Fedde in the fourth. Kyle Teel followed with a single and Luis Robert Jr. advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Ryan Noda struck out, but Josh Rojas hit a grounder back up the middle. Cardinals shortstop Masyn Winn fielded the ball, spun and fired to first. But the throw was off the mark, and Vargas came home to tie the score. Vargas broke the tie with his RBI hit in the fifth. '(He's) deep in the count, taking good swings at good pitches and obviously got the job done,' Venable said. 'Nice to see him come through in that spot.' The Cardinals evened the score in the sixth when Lars Nootbaar drew a bases-loaded walk against reliever Brandon Eisert. The lefty rebounded, striking out Jordan Walker. Pinch hitter Lenyn Sosa struck out to begin the bottom of the sixth but reached first when the ball bounced away from catcher Iván Herrera on a wild pitch. And with one out, Taylor homered to left to give the Sox a 4-2 lead. The Cardinals tied it in the eighth with a two-run home run from Contreras against reliever Cam Booser. Nolan Gorman then hit a grounder back to the mound, and Booser threw wildly to first. Gorman advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a flyout. Pozo drove him in with a single. The Sox were retired in order in the eighth and ninth, falling to 28 games under .500 at 23-51. 'I don't think we're far off in these games,' Burke said of the close losses. 'I don't think it's any one part that you kind of point out and say, 'This is the reason why we're losing these games.' There's a bunch of things we can do better as a team top to bottom. A game like that, if I have a better start from the beginning, maybe I'm able to go a full six with no runs. Or that last inning, maybe one or two things go differently, I'm able to finish that inning. Hitting-wise, if you get another hit. 'I don't think it's ever one aspect of a team. Just overall we have to be a little better in those games, and I think now that we've been in a lot of one-run games, close games, the experience with that will help us do better with it in the future.'

Johnson brings versatility and size to the program at 6-foot, 3-inches, and 240-pounds. He can run and tackle, but can also come off the edge on a pass rush when asked to do so. His commitment brings the 2026 class up to 16 members as the No. 3-ranked class currently in the country according to the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings. Ohio State is still putting the final touches on its 2026 class, and you can bet that there will still be some more news in the near future on players that commit to this year's cycle. Contreras and Pozo rally Cardinals past White Sox in 1st game of doubleheader
Willson Contreras hit a tying homer in the eighth inning and pinch-hitter Yohel Pozo singled home the go-ahead run as the St. Louis Cardinals rallied past the skidding Chicago White Sox 5-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Thursday. Chicago reliever Cam Booser (1-4) began the eighth with a 4-2 lead and gave up a leadoff single to Alec Burleson. Contreras hit the next pitch out to left-center for a two-run shot. Nolan Gorman reached on Booser's throwing error and scored the tiebreaking run with two outs when Pozo hit a line drive to left field on a full-count pitch, sending the White Sox to their seventh consecutive defeat. St. Louis has won three of four since a six-game slide. The Cardinals loaded the bases with nobody out in the first against Sean Burke but managed only Contreras' sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Chicago tied it on shortstop Masyn Winn's throwing error in the fourth and took a 2-1 lead when Andrew Benintendi tripled and scored on Miguel Vargas' single in the fifth. Brandon Eisert replaced Burke with two on in the sixth and walked Nolan Arenado intentionally before walking Lars Nootbaar on five pitches to make it 2-all. Lenyn Sosa struck out against Steven Matz leading off the sixth but reached first base on a wild pitch. Michael A. Taylor hit his fourth homer one out later to give the White Sox a 4-2 lead. Cardinals starter Erick Fedde allowed two runs — one earned — and six hits in five innings. Andre Granillo (1-0) got the final out in the seventh for his first major league win. Contreras became the first Cardinals player to hit 10 homers this season — in the team's 74th game. In the makeup of Wednesday night's rainout, Cardinals RHP Michael McGreevy (1-1, 3.09 ERA) started Game 2 opposite White Sox rookie Mike Vasil (3-2, 1.99).
