Tokyo Consumer Prices Signal Rise in Japan-Wide Inflation

TOKYO—Consumer inflation in the Tokyo metropolitan area picked up in May, signaling persistent price pressures nationwide.
Excluding fresh food, consumer prices in Tokyo rose 3.6% in May from a year earlier as food prices continued to rise, official data showed Friday. That compared with April's 3.4% increase and the 3.5% growth expected in a poll of economists by data provider Quick.

Dollar strong as Trump imposes new tariff rates; yen sinks to four-month low

By Kevin Buckland TOKYO (Reuters) -The dollar headed for its best week in almost three years against its major peers, maintaining momentum on Friday after U.S. President Donald Trump set new tariff rates on dozens of trade partners. The yen touched a four-month low against the greenback, extending its steep decline from Thursday after the Bank of Japan signalled it was in no hurry to resume interest rate hikes. In trade-related moves, the U.S. currency gained ground on the Swiss franc after Trump set a 39% tariff rate on Swiss imports, up from the 31% he previously mooted. Canada's dollar dipped to a more than two-month trough after the country received a 35% levy instead of an earlier threatened 25%. The euro remained pinned near an almost two-month low, as it continues to be weighed down by what markets see as a lopsided trade agreement with Washington. The U.S. dollar stayed strong even though Trump continued his attacks on Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell overnight, calling him a "terrible" Fed Chair and calling his own decision to appoint Powell to the position a "mistake". Trump's repeated threats to fire Powell and calls for the Fed to drastically cut rates has put the central bank's independence in question, hurting the dollar in recent months. "In the short-term you can make the case for more dollar strength," said Mike Houlahan, director at Electus Financial in Auckland. "The lion's share of the tariff news has washed through." "The big move of the week has really been the euro getting rerated downwards," he said. "The net result would be the EU-U.S. trade deal is a further headwind for the euro." The U.S. dollar index - which measures the currency against a basket of six major peers including the euro, yen, Swiss franc and Canada's loonie - pushed as high as 100.10 overnight, topping 100 for the first time since May 29. The yen changed hands at 150.64 per dollar after dipping to 150.89 per dollar early on Friday, its weakest since March 28. The euro hovered around $1.1420, not straying far from Wednesday's low of $1.1401, a level not seen since June 10. The franc eased as much as 0.26% to 0.8120 per dollar. The loonie slipped 0.12% to plumb its lowest since May 22 at C$1.3872 versus its U.S. peer.

China's manufacturing activity shrinks as exports drag, S&P PMI shows

BEIJING (Reuters) -China's factory activity deteriorated in July, as a softening of new business growth led manufacturers to scale back production, a private-sector survey showed on Friday. The S&P Global China General Manufacturing PMI fell to 49.5 in July from 50.4 in June, undershooting analysts' expectations of 50.4 in a Reuters poll. The 50-mark separates growth from contraction. The reading, combined with Thursday's official survey, bodes ill for growth momentum at the start of the third quarter, following robust growth in the first half of the year. Amid a trade truce with Washington, economists say the support of exports front-loading ahead of higher U.S. tariffs to the world's second-biggest economy may fade over the remainder of the year. According to the S&P Global survey, new export orders contracted for a fourth straight month and at a faster pace than in June. After rising in June, manufacturing output declined in July. Firms looked to utilise their current stock holdings for the fulfilment of orders, which contributed to a second successive monthly decline in post-production inventories. Falling production together with a stable backlog prompted factory owners to lower their headcount in July. Firms also said cost concerns had underpinned decisions to shed staff. However, business sentiment improved at the start of the second half of 2025 but was still below the series average. Manufacturers expected better economic conditions and promotional efforts to spur sales in the year ahead. As Beijing started to tackle "price wars" among manufacturers, average input prices increased for the first time in five months. Firms nevertheless lowered their selling prices again as competition for new business intensified. But export charges increased at the fastest pace in a year due to rising shipping and logistics costs. Top leaders on Wednesday pledged to support an economy that is facing various risks, by managing what is viewed as disorderly competition in the second half of the year. Markets expected that Beijing may be about to start a new round of factory capacity cuts in a long-awaited but challenging campaign against deflation. From July, Caixin no longer sponsors the S&P Global China PMI. Sign in to access your portfolio
