Book Review: 'Royal Gambit' by Daniel O'Malley finds magic in the murder of a royal family member
Gambit centers around the aristocratic Lady Alexandra Mondegreen (Alix) and her investigation into the mysterious murder of her childhood friend, the Prince of Wales. Alix has the unique talent of being able to shatter bones with just a touch of her hand, but she is resented by the other members of the service for the perceived favoritism that comes with her noble title. Her youth was spent as a secret bodyguard to Princess Louise, the woman who now finds herself next in line to the throne. This connection proves useful as the agency's way into investigating who at the palace (or outside of it) could be responsible for the death of the heir apparent and gives Alix a chance to prove her worth as an asset to the agency.
O'Malley finds humor in showing how these agents with strange and sometimes absurd powers (one senior official can turn into a stegosaurus at will) adhere to the same bureaucracy and hierarchies as any other government organization. Along with coming to work on time and navigating office politics, there is a chance you will be the victim of a dinosaur stampede or watch your colleague turn into a tree.
Alix also emerges as a compelling heroine, driven by her ambition to rise within the ranks of the Checquy and prove herself, yet deeply committed to uncovering the truth behind the tragedy that struck a family she has genuine affection for. A highlight of the book is her sometimes awkward, but humorous journey as a new lady-in-waiting to the princess, having to balance garden lunches with dangerous missions.
Although intended as a stand-alone story, O'Malley assumes readers will quickly grasp the complexities of this world and how it operates without much prior knowledge. However, keeping track of the extensive rules and traditions of this secret service and upper-crust English society makes it difficult to keep engaged in the mystery at hand. The book gets bogged down in its mythology and is slow to give us plot developments. Further challenging the pacing of the novel are the constant additions to an over-large cast of characters, all with different supernatural abilities or aristocratic titles.
All of these elements lead to a clunky conclusion that too easily ties up loose ends and loses the impact of the tragedy that started the story. The book would have benefited from more clever twists and paranormal action, as opposed to heavy exposition about this super-secret agency and the people who run it. Ultimately, this makes for a fun, elevated beach read for those who enjoy their mystery novels with supernatural leanings and a dry British sense of humor.

Drake Debuts His Latest Superstar Collaboration At No. 1
Drake is accustomed to reaching No. 1s on the Billboard charts, and his latest smash adds several more winners to his already-historic tally. The rapper has been one of the most successful names in American music for more than a decade, and he often launches new cuts directly in the top spot. That is true again this frame with 'Which One,' his new collaboration with U.K. star Central Cee. While it misses one major throne by a single spot, it still opens as a champion on multiple lists. Three New No. 1s for 'Which One' 'Which One' starts at No. 1 on R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs, Rap Streaming Songs, and Rap Digital Song Sales charts this week. The track is a major smash on streaming platforms – which is a common occurrence for the Canadian hip-hop talent – and even a bestseller, though only when looking specifically at rap. Drake's Career Totals Reach New Heights As 'Which One' arrives, Drake has now collected 27 No. 1s on the R&B/Hip-Hop Streaming Songs chart, 22 on the Rap Streaming Songs list, and 25 on the Rap Digital Song Sales tally. On each roster, he has earned well over 120 top 10s — a feat no other rapper has matched. 'Which One' Opens High on Other Rankings Beyond its trio of debuts at No. 1, 'Which One' enters inside the top 10 on several other Billboard tallies. The cut opens at No. 8 on the Streaming Songs chart, No. 3 on both the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs and R&B/Hip-Hop Digital Song Sales lists, and in the runner-up spot on the Hot Rap Songs roster. On that last ranking, Drake is held at bay by Kendrick Lamar and SZA's 'Luther,' which extends its run as the longest leader in the chart's history. Another Hot 100 Win for Drake On the all-genre Hot 100, 'Which One' begins at No. 23, marking Drake's three-hundred-and-sixtieth career entry. That is significantly more than any other artist has managed, and he extends his lead over every other artist yet again. The collaboration also earns a quick start on the Rap Airplay chart, beginning its time at No. 25. Following What Did I Miss?' The new cut comes just a month after Drake's solo single 'What Did I Miss?,' which is dipping on most lists but still climbing to new highs on the Radio Songs, R&B/Hip-Hop Airplay, and Rap Airplay charts. Both tracks are expected to be featured on his upcoming album Iceman, which is rumored to be released later this year. A Shift Back to Rap on 'Which One' Earlier in 2025, Drake teamed with PartyNextDoor on a joint project heavy on R&B-leaning tracks titled Some Sexy Songs 4 U. 'Which One' brings him back to a more assertive rap style, pairing his own verses with Cee's in another team-up for the two.

"Love Island UK" Just Had One Of Its Best Seasons Ever, And These Are The Moments Everyone Can't Stop Talking About
And just like that, another dramatic season of Love Island UK has come to a close. With season 12 concluding airing on Monday night in the UK — and with 3.4 million viewers worldwide tuning in to watch the finale — it was the most-watched season finale since 2019. And, btw, if you have not finished Season 12 of Love Island UK on Hulu yet... SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!!!! The much-anticipated finale saw Connecticut-born Antonia 'Toni' Laites and Cacherel 'Cach' Mercer steal the hearts of the nation, and crowned worthy winners of the £50,000 cash prize. ITV / Via Twitter: @dragonia_queen More so than ever, season 12 was filled with more drama, emotional explosions, and dramatic twists like no other. No season has seen more couple-swapping, drama-filled movie nights, and explosive fights. And we loved every moment of it. Here are our top OMG moments of this year's Love Island UK. 1. The rise of YasGPT ITV / Via Twitter: @5ophial This year's standout character of the season was none other than Yasmin Pettet. She was dubbed 'Yas-GPT' by social media users and lovers of the show, thanks to her impeccable posture, perfectly nuanced phrases, and a 'clean-girl aesthetic' that led to rumours that the islander may in fact be a robot in nature. Yasmin had her fair share of OMG moments this season, including the iconic delivery of 'I'm waiting for you to shut up and kiss me' to Harry Cooksley in the Hideaway, her "no, it was three times actually" remark and the discovery that she has a twin sister, Zara, who soon shot to popularity on TikTok. Harry, Shakira, And Helena Love Triangle Season 12 runner-ups Shakira Khan and Harry seemed all smiles in the final, but their journey was nowhere near smooth sailing. The pair coupled up early on in the series, before Harry's wandering eyes led him to couple up with Helena Ford. However, this didn't stop the semi-professional footballer from exploring connections with other islanders, leading to an onslaught of criticism towards Helena and her nonchalant reaction as he entertained flirty conversations with several hot singles. But the real OMG moment was in the last week of the series, when Harry decided that he still had feelings for Shakira, despite being exclusive with Helena, leading to an explosion of drama around the villa, and the eventual recoupling with Shakira. After weeks of being with Helena, the decision to return to Shakira led to the dumping of Helena, a shocking twist in the pair's love story, but a shot at the winning spot for Harry. Bringing Back Lucy From Casa Amor Despite the unruly nature of the men in this year's line up, one gem stood out from most, and that was landscape gardener Tommy Bradley. His sweet nature stole the hearts of viewers, and when his partner Megan left him for Conor Phillips, the nation was heartbroken. Until Tommy coupled up with fellow sweetheart Emily Moran. It seemed smooth sailing for the pair, who avoided drama and matched each other's gentle vibes. It seemed as if Tommy had finally found his match. That was until the shock return of Tommy from Casa Amor, along with Lucy Quinn, leaving Emily single and dumped from the island. It was a truly shocking moment of the season. But that isn't all. In the season finale, it was revealed that Tommy had in fact gone on to disrespect Lucy at his first post-show event by snogging another girl. A double shocker! surprise return of Blu and Irish Megan The islanders were left shocked after a public vote saw the dumping of popular islander Megan Forte Clarke. But her departure didn't last long. A couple weeks later, a text letting islanders that a pair of bombshells had arrived led to the surprise return of Megan, alongside fellow islander Blu Chegini. 5. Young Bull vs The Entire Female Population ITV / Via Twitter: @loveislandxo_ This year's Love Island UK boys instilled frustration, fear and anger in female viewers, who tuned in every night to see the constant flirting, disrespect and disregard for their relationships. It was Harrison Solomon, aka Young Bull, who shocked viewers the most, with his actions resulting in more than 1,000 complaints to Offcom for 'misogyny' and 'bullying'. Constantly flicking between eventual winner Toni and his Casa Amor partner Lauren Wood, viewers were left shouting at their screens seeing Harrison get intimate with Lauren, before asking Toni to couple up with him in the next recoupling, to which she did. A moment that shocked the nation and led to thousands of complaints. After Lauren was dumped, it took just one day for a teary-eyed Harrison to decide to leave the island and go after her, leading to one of the most shocking moments of the season. big "DIVIDE" This year saw a divide within the villa, with the girls splitting into two opposing groups and a rift that grew as the series progressed. From digs during movie night to girls saying they 'can't stand' each other, the girls and their heated comments left viewers shocked to say the least. One scene that shocked viewers in particular was during movie night, when clips of Meg and Helena making harsh comments about Toni and Shakira were brought to light, nastier than most comments made in previous years. Viewers were quick to head to social media and share their shock over the nasty comments, labelling Meg and Helena as 'mean girls." And Dejon's Final Date And The Return Of The Ex-Islanders Megan Moore and Dejon Noel-Williams were the only couple to officially become boyfriend and girlfriend this season. Despite weeks of fights and making up, the pair dropped the L-bomb and became exclusive. The final date of the season saw all five couples enjoy romantic dinners together. However, this heartfelt moment saw Meg and Dejon spiraling into yet another argument, and the couple sitting in dead silence. The following day, it was down to the dumped islanders to decide who should next leave the villa. Dejon's former flame Andrada Pop then revealed to the islanders that clips from Meg and Dejon's date saw comments from Dejon insinuating the importance of keeping up appearances for the cameras for the pair's popularity. It is safe to say the islanders were shocked to hear this, and the pair were dumped soon after. Steamy Nighttime Romps In previous seasons, the islanders have not been afraid to get physical in the bedroom, with producers happy to show short clips and shots of the action. However, this year, clips of Meg and Dejon left viewers 'disgusted' and gobsmacked that their romps were aired. Viewers have called the scenes 'horrifying', and even threatened to report the scenes to Ofcom after several episodes featured the pair getting frisky under the covers. DRAMA! 9. Harry's Ex of 3 Years Arrives to the Villa @whyyougassed / Via Twitter: @whyyougassed We've all bumped into an ex at some point or another and wished we could just disappear. Well imagine that happening on the big screen in front of millions. The Love Island producers flipped through their book of mischievous ideas and decided to put lady's man Harry in Casa Amor with no one other than his real life ex girlfriend of three years, Emma Munro. Shock horror! What was your favourite OMG moment from this year's Love Island UK? Let us know in the comments below! And remember, you can catch up on every episode of Love Island UK now only on Hulu!
