New Škoda Kodiaq Review: Full-size Family SUV

The Hindu21-04-2025

In the world of full-size SUVs, where space meets sophistication, the new Škoda Kodiaq makes a compelling case for itself. Now longer, sleeker, and richer in detail, this second-generation model has evolved beyond just size—it feels like Škoda has truly gone upmarket, blurring the line between premium mass market and entry-level luxury.
The Skoda Kodiaq's design language has matured. Its sculpted bonnet flows gracefully into a bolder octagonal grille, now finished in an elegant Dark Chrome that extends to the D-pillar and Škoda lettering on the tailgate. A horizontal light strip bisects the redesigned grille, offering a visual signature that glows distinctly at night. Adding to the drama are new second-gen LED beam headlights featuring a coloured crystalline element that will delight those with an eye for detail.
At the rear, the full-width decorative strip connects sharply contoured C-shaped LED tail lamps. The large tailgate and bumper, now even more defined with a wide diffuser, lend it a stately posture. A new Bronx Gold Metallic paint option and R18 Aero alloy wheels complete the SUV's head-turning aesthetics.
At 4,758 mm in length—59 mm longer than before—the new Kodiaq isn't simply bigger for the sake of it. The additional length translates into meaningful gains in cabin space. The second and third rows now offer better room, making the SUV more accommodating for families who value comfort in all three rows. That third row, in particular, lends genuine seating flexibility, allowing the Kodiaq to adapt effortlessly to different passenger and luggage needs—something few premium SUVs execute this well.
Boot space is impressively versatile, offering 281 litres with all seats up, 786 litres with the third row folded, and a cavernous 1976 litres with the second row down. Whether it's airport runs or weekend getaways, the Kodiaq handles cargo with ease.
Where the Kodiaq truly exceeds expectations is on the inside. The cabin quality is on par with what you would find in a luxury car. From the Cognac leather upholstery with contrast stitching to the ambient mood lighting and high-end materials used across the dash, it feels more European luxury than premium mainstream.
There's a massive 32.77 cm free-standing infotainment display paired with a 26.03 cm Virtual Cockpit, but the pièce de résistance is the Škoda Smart Dials—rotary push-buttons with their own displays that control cabin climate, seat functions, and more. It's clever, tactile, and just plain satisfying to use. This level of attention to detail, right down to the umbrella in the door, gives the Kodiaq the polish of a car twice its price.
The Front Ergo seats with pneumatic massage settings—controllable via eight unique programs—make long drives comfortable. Rear passengers are not forgotten either, with rolling sunblinds, tablet holders, and a central storage console for added convenience. The in-cabin experience is further elevated by a powerful 725W CANTON sound system with 13 speakers and a subwoofer, delivering a rich, immersive audio experience.
Despite its many strengths, the lack of ADAS features feels like a notable omission, especially in an otherwise well-specced package that nails everything else. In today's competitive market, where advanced safety tech is fast becoming a norm rather than a luxury, it is an odd gap to overlook.
The 2.0-litre TSI engine under the hood produces 204 PS and 320 Nm of torque. Mated to a smooth-shifting 7-speed DSG transmission, this powertrain delivers a surprisingly peppy performance. Whether you're darting through city traffic or stretching its legs on the highway, the Kodiaq feels refined and eager.
The lack of a diesel or hybrid powertrain could deter buyers looking for broader options, especially those prioritizing fuel economy. However, the petrol engine is punchy, responsive, and surprisingly frugal for a car of this size, with a claimed mileage of 14.86 kmpl. Importantly, it drives smaller than it looks—thanks to well-tuned suspension and excellent road manners—offering the kind of ride comfort and handling you rarely expect from a 7-seater.
The new Škoda Kodiaq raises the bar. It's not just a facelift or a refresh—it's a reinvention. It combines luxury-grade interiors, a strong petrol engine, refined dynamics, and space for the whole family, all in a package that's distinctive on the road.
At the same time, the Kodiaq does come at a price. With a starting tag of ₹46.89 lakh (ex-showroom), it's on the steeper end of the premium SUV segment. While it remains competitively priced for a fully-loaded 3-row SUV, buyers may hesitate when they consider alternatives like the Tiguan R-Line or entry-level models from German brands. Still, if badge value isn't your top priority, the Kodiaq stands tall as a well-appointed machine that checks nearly every box—power, comfort, space, and features. For the discerning family, it's a solid, satisfying choice.
Price: ₹ 46.89 lakh onwards

Skoda's day out: Kylaq, Slavia Monte Carlo, Kodiaq and beyond!

Our day began with the RoRo ferry from Mumbai's Princess Dock to Alibaug, which is approximately 100km from the financial capital's mainland to the island town. This journey usually takes around two hours by road, but thanks to the ferry, we were across in just an hour. The impressive Kodiaq lounge aboard the ferry served as a reminder of the Czech brand's presence in our country, which has been around in India for the past 25 years. Upon arrival at the Mandwa jetty port, we were treated to a compact and neatly designed tarmac course, which would serve as the appetiser. The Kylaq's compact dimensions make it an able handler. advertisementSkoda had prepared for us to take on said course, which included a handling section, moose test, acceleration-braking and slalom section to whet our appetite. After a demo lap from the instructors, it was first time to unleash the might-impressive Kylaq, which handled all sections with calm and ease. Sure, the 1.0-litre, three-cylinder TSI motor suffered from a slight lack of power under 2,000rpm, but it came to life beyond that and had well-contained body roll throughout. Its compact dimensions and attractive design language make it a tasty proposition in the sub-4m SUV segment in the country. The handling course included two right-handers and two left-handers, all of which had varying degrees of turn-in. advertisementNext up, there was a choice to be made. Either take the 1.5-litre, four-cylinder TSI-equipped Kushaq or Slavia for the same course. I opted to go for the sedan, simply because I've always had a soft corner for both the Virtus and Slavia. Also, it is quite a looker in its 'Monte Carlo' guise, finished in 'Tornado Red' with those additional mini side and front skirts. Nevertheless, Slavia also proved to be impressive around this mini-track of sorts. Its body roll felt more predictable, yet kept it tight in the corners, and the moose test, or the 'cow' test, in our country. The Kylaq held its own in the moose test, as well. Both the Kylaq and Slavia are testaments to Skoda's commitment to offering vehicles that feel premium, offer a good set of features, with an element of excitement. Ashish Gupta, brand director, Skoda Auto India, explained later in the day about Skoda's renewed commitment, which focuses on three key pillars - relevance, differentiation and trust. The first is to offer relevant products, which make sense for our market at different and accessible price points. The second is to have a clear path to distinguish it from the rest of the competition. And the third, and perhaps most crucial, is to improve the service experience and build a strong sense of community with the Skoda brand in India. The Slavia also impressed with its minimal body roll and plenty of power on tap. After completing the track experience, it was time for a short drive over to the off-road course. Lying in wait was Skoda's flagship model in India, which we've already had a chance to drive and sample, but not quite like this. Once again, there was a briefing to explain the facets of the course Skoda had prepared, and although it may not have been an extensive one, it certainly had a few tricky sections that required utmost attention. For example, there were steep inclines and declines, articulation sections, ditches, and a braking test section as well. Minimal steering input was key in some sections of the off-road course. advertisementDuring the demo run with the instructor, it was important to follow the rule of 'ASAP' or as slow as possible. Also, steering inputs have to be kept to a minimum, and unlike the tarmac section, it is important not to keep your thumbs locked into the steering wheel, as in some parts of the off-road course, the steering could bite back, and this could potentially be a cause for injury. Thankfully, the Kodiaq kept us cocooned in luxury, whilst taking on the course with relative ease. Its hill descent control came into play on those sharp declines, and its traction control system on the half-and-half braking section, which had a paved and mud section. The safety-based electronics came into play on more than one occasion. The ditch section too was a breeze as the Kodiaq managed its weight extremely well, and there was never a cause for concern or lack of power from the 2.0-litre, four-cylinder TSI motor. The large screen in the cabin had the position of the wheel and the level of degrees to which the tyres turn, right there in front of us, to further aid us during this off-road course. It's safe to say that the Kodiaq is at the helm of Skoda's line-up in India, and it's for good reason, too. It's a demonstration of the kind of products the 130-year-old brand can produce, and there is another iconic model to join its ranks soon. The freshly appointed brand director and Skoda Auto India claim that 2025 will be the brand's biggest year yet. For a sharp incline, its best feed the throttle consistently and not loose momentum. advertisementSkoda will also be concentrating on emphasising the importance and democratisation of the automatic gearbox, especially through products like the Kylaq, which offers a six-speed torque converter. Just in the last year, Skoda claims to have risen from the 11th position to the seventh position, as far as auto brands in India are concerned. In 2025, Skoda hopes to increase its market share and growth in sales volumes by two times, and also increase customer, sales and aftersales touchpoints across multiple cities. The brand also plans to foray into the pre-owned car business soon, and the brand-new product scheduled to arrive this year could very well be the latest generation of the revered Octavia to Auto Today Magazine The articulation section doesn't require throttle input; it's best to let the vehicle proceed at its own pace.

Skoda Auto India Sets Bold Growth Strategy for 2025, Eyes Record Expansion and Product Launches

Mumbai, June 12, 2025: Marking a dual milestone—130 years of global automotive excellence and 25 years in India—Skoda Auto India has laid out a comprehensive roadmap to significantly accelerate its growth in the country. The company is gearing up to make 2025 its biggest year yet with an aggressive push across product development, network expansion, customer experience, and new business verticals. Speaking at the announcement, Ashish Gupta, Brand Director of Skoda Auto India, emphasized the strategic importance of the Indian market for the brand. 'India is the most important growth market for Skoda Auto outside Europe. Our mission is to build a future-ready brand that's agile, purposeful, and in tune with evolving consumer aspirations. With strong action across all fronts, 2025 will be a landmark year in our India journey,' he said. SUV-Centric Product Strategy As part of its 'product offensive,' Skoda Auto India is reinforcing its SUV lineup while maintaining its leadership in the sedan segment. The current SUV portfolio—comprising the Kylaq, Kushaq, and Kodiaq—caters to a wide spectrum of customer preferences. On the sedan front, the Slavia continues to lead, and a new global model is set to debut soon, further expanding Skoda's premium appeal in India. Expanding Footprint Beyond Metro Markets Skoda Auto India is accelerating its network expansion, aiming to reach over 200 cities in 2025, up from 165 currently. The number of customer touchpoints has already more than doubled—from 120 in 2021 to over 290 today—with a goal of 350 by the end of 2025. This push is largely focused on penetrating Tier II and Tier III cities. New Business Channels & Pre-Owned Vehicles The company is also exploring new revenue streams, including a renewed focus on its certified pre-owned car program. Additionally, Skoda plans to expand its footprint in fleet, government, corporate, and rural markets, tapping into segments that promise significant growth. Enhanced Ownership Experience Skoda Auto India is placing equal emphasis on the quality of its customer engagement. Initiatives such as the Skoda Supercare program offer free routine servicing until the second year or 30,000 km—whichever comes first. This is supported by robust warranty packages and transparent service programs designed to build trust and long-term brand loyalty. With this multifaceted approach, Skoda Auto India aims to not only deepen its presence but also redefine premium mobility for Indian consumers, setting the stage for a transformative 2025.
