Rebel leader: V S Achuthanandans impact on CPI(M)
The contradictory stand that he adopted put the party in a tough position many times, and the murder of Revolutionary Marxist Party (RMP) leader T P Chandrasekharan was one of such incidents.
Chandrasekharan, a former CPI(M) leader who had quit the party following differences with the leadership, was hacked to death by a gang while he was returning home on his bike at Onchiyam in Kozhikode on May 4, 2012.
The murder was allegedly masterminded by the local leaders of the CPI(M).
Though the party leadership adopted a stand that Chandrasekharan was a 'traitor," Achuthanandan never denounced his former party colleague.
When the party argued that the then UDF government's move to order a CBI probe into the gruesome murder was a politically motivated one, VS supported the central agency probe and even wrote to the authorities demanding the same.
He even defied the party's directive not to visit Chandrasekhar's house and called on his widow K K Rema on the politically significant day of Neyyattinkara bypoll in the same year.
The slain leader's house had witnessed highly emotional scenes on the day when VS came there.
Overcome with emotion, Rema wept bitterly, clutching Achuthanandan's folded hands for several seconds. The poignant moment was captured in a photograph that graced the front pages of all major newspapers the following day.
Though Achuthanandan refused to speak to the media at the time, his surprise visit–and the subsequent publication of the photo–served as a political statement and a clear response to his party on the matter.
An emotional Rema, now the UDF-backed Vadakara MLA, shared the same photo on her Facebook page on Monday as a tribute to the leader, accompanied by a heartfelt note. PTI LGK KH

UP Police raids fake ‘embassy' in Ghaziabad, arrests ‘ambassador' of non-existent West Arctica
The Uttar Pradesh Police have unearthed a fake 'embassy' operating in Ghaziabad and arrested a man claiming to be an 'ambassador' of a non-existent country called 'West Arctica', The Indian Express reported on Wednesday. The arrested man was identified as Harsh Vardhan Jain, a resident of Kavi Nagar in Ghaziabad, PTI reported. Additional Director General of Police Amitabh Yash claimed that Jain was running a bogus embassy from a rented house and projected himself as the diplomatic representative of several non-existent countries such as West Arctica, Saborga, Poulvia and Lodonia, the news agency reported. The accused also moved around in vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates, Yash added. Jain reportedly used the setup to pass himself off as a powerful global player. 'He used the guise of diplomacy to influence businessmen, promise them access to international markets, and run a hawala network through shell companies,' The Indian Express quoted the police as saying. Preliminary investigations further suggested that Jain brokered deals by falsely promising job placements for companies and persons in foreign countries, PTI reported. After his arrest on Monday, the police seized four vehicles bearing fake diplomatic number plates, 12 forged diplomatic passports, fake documents bearing Ministry of External Affairs seals, forged PAN cards, rubber stamps of several countries and companies, and fake press cards, PTI reported. The police also said that Rs 44.7 lakh in cash, foreign currency, documents linked to several companies and fake diplomatic number plates were seized. A first information report was filed at the Kavi Nagar Police Station and further investigation was underway, The Indian Express reported. In 2011, Jain had been booked for illegally possessing a satellite phone, PTI reported. He has also been linked to controversial godman Chandraswami and international arms dealer Adnan Khashoggi earlier.

‘What If I Slap My HR?': 19-Year-Old Rants It Out On Reddit Over Salary Delay
Last Updated: A 19-year-old woman, frustrated with her workplace situation, turned to social media and asked if she could 'slap' her HR. A 19-year-old woman posed a bold question online that caught attention online and stirred a wave of reactions. Frustrated with her workplace situation, she turned to social media and asked if she could 'slap" her HR. The woman, who said it was her first job, claimed that her salary was being delayed and blamed the HR for not taking any action. She described the HR as someone who 'does nothing all day" and wanted to know if taking a drastic step would lead to 'consequences." With the title, 'What if I slap my HR?" the Reddit post read, 'So basically this is my first job and I am 19F and my office is delaying my salary because my HR is a lazy b****** who does nothing all day so what if I slap her? would I face any consequences?" The post gained significant attention online and drew a wide range of responses. While some people responded with humour, others chose to give serious and practical advice. One user joked, 'Looks like weekend fun has already started," while another added, 'Destroy rangoli, that will hurt them more." 'What kind of question is it? Anyone can't slap anyone for this reason. Write an email to seniors regarding the matter," someone said. 'As much as I want to say 'go for it' (cause you're 19, they probably deserve it, and it won't matter in terms of your future prospects), this constitutes assault and they could make your life difficult. Worse, you may have to apologize. That just emboldens these people more. Come up with more creative ways that can't come back to hurt you," a person shared. 'Don't be a fool! You've got your corporate career left! If you have a backup then I would say beat the shit out of her," read another comment. An individual suggested, 'I would love to say yes, but strictly no it will become a headache for you. Start emailing and add email chains daily. The longer it takes, the more powerful the email chain becomes. For every 2-3 days add someone on top of her, or add HR help email." It is important to remember that such actions can lead to serious legal consequences. In 2024, the Bombay High Court upheld the 2001 termination of Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd. (HPCL) employee for slapping a supervisor. The court said it was 'startled" that the industrial tribunal in 2012, had not found the act serious enough to justify his dismissal. view comments First Published: July 23, 2025, 17:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
