Kaleshwaram a viable project: Harish
Hyderabad: Bharat Rashtra Samithi senior leader and former irrigation minister T Harish Rao explained the Justice Ghose Commission of inquiry, which is probing the alleged irregularities in the execution of the Kaleshwaram project, the economic viability of the biggest lift irrigation scheme in the state.
The senior BRS leader and then irrigation minister deposed before the Commission on Monday and submitted documentary evidence on how the Kaleshwaram project was designed to generate revenues along the water flow areas, which could be used to repay loans taken from various financial institutions for the construction of the project. Harish Rao briefed Justice Ghose that the then BRS government had borrowed loans to construct the project, which included barrages and reservoirs, by letting financial institutions know about the revenue stream through supply of abundant water to industries for commercial needs.
He elaborated the need for such revenue generation to repay the loans to avoid putting the burden on the state government. However, the Covid-19 pandemic created trouble in implementing the plans relating to revenue generation. The BRS leader said that the project was built to also meet the growing irrigation needs as well as drinking water purpose for Hyderabad city.
When the Commission posed a volley of questions on the project design, water release in the barrages and maintenance of the structures, Harish Rao sought to put the record straight by presenting government orders as well as Central Water Commission and Technical Committee reports. Since the Maharashtra government was opposed to Tummidihetti, he said that the BRS government finalized Medigadda barrage in tune with the recommendations made by Technical Committee and retired engineers' reports.
Harish Rao also narrated the purpose of the constitution of the Cabinet Sub Committee with T Nageswara Rao, E Rajendar and him, stating it which was confined to the study of increasing irrigation facility in the state and that the committee had no role in the Kaleshwaram project. Filling the barrages with water was purely a technical issue and the engineers were responsible for it. The BRS leader said that engineers developed the plan for the entire project based on the technical reports. Relevant WAPCOS reports and CWC letters were placed on record.
Speaking to newsmen after 40 minutes of open court questioning by the Commission, Harish pointed out that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy recently laid the foundation for the Gandamalla Project, which will receive water from the Mallanna Sagar -- a key reservoir of the Kaleshwaram project. Even the proposed Musi River beautification and Hyderabad drinking water supply projects were dependent on water from the Mallanna Sagar.
Coco Cola unit is proof
Harish Rao told the Commission that Coca Cola Company had set up a soft drink manufacturing unit in Siddipet by utilizing water released from the Kaleshwaram project and it was a testimony to the economic viability of the lift irrigation project. Revenue generated from vending Kaleshwaram water to the industries could be a big source of revenue. The previous government had come up with a plan to promote industries all along the water flowing areas in the Kaleshwaram.

Chennai: The State Planning Commission (SPC) has unveiled a comprehensive six-point policy roadmap aimed at transforming Tamil Nadu into a global leader in sustainable mobility and electric vehicle (EV) innovation. Titled 'Tamil Nadu's Automotive Future,' the SPC report was formally submitted to Chief Minister M.K. Stalin by Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin and SPC Executive Chairman J. Jeyaranjan at the State Secretariat. The report highlights the need for Tamil Nadu to evolve from a traditional automotive manufacturing hub to a centre for deep mobility innovation. To achieve this, the Commission recommended institutional and financial support for advanced research, intellectual property (IP) creation, and product development. A key recommendation is the establishment of a Tamil Nadu Mobility Innovation Fund to co-finance high-risk, high-reward R&D in areas such as battery technologies, EV operating systems, hydrogen propulsion, energy management software, and lightweight materials. The roadmap also suggests the creation of mobility R&D zones co-located with existing EV hubs in Chennai, Coimbatore, and Hosur. These zones would include shared infrastructure such as battery certification centres, electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) labs, simulation environments, and vehicle testing tracks. The SPC called for strong academic-industry partnerships with premier institutions like IIT-Madras and Anna University. It also recommended fellowships and startup grants for researchers working on commercially viable innovations. To encourage broader participation, the Commission proposed plug-and-play access to public R&D labs and prototyping tools for startups and MSMEs. Addressing the issue of underutilised talent, the report flagged that over 1.5 lakh engineering graduates are produced annually in Tamil Nadu but remain underrepresented in core R&D roles. To bridge this gap, the Commission recommended launching the Mobility Skills 2030 programme with specialised courses in EV powertrains, battery technology, embedded systems, and logistics analytics. For balanced regional development, the report advocated targeted incentives for companies establishing units in non-urban districts, positioning mobility as a driver for equitable economic growth. On the infrastructure front, the SPC urged the state to fast-track the deployment of public charging stations along highways, in industrial zones, and within urban mobility hubs. It also recommended time-bound incentives for commercial EVs, including electric trucks and small commercial vehicles (e-SCVs). The Commission warned that EV adoption in the heavy commercial vehicle segment may remain below 20 per cent by 2030 without active government intervention. It proposed forming a Mobility Innovation and Growth Council comprising government, industry, academia, and civil society stakeholders to steer policy implementation. Lastly, the roadmap called for the formulation of a statewide EV charging infrastructure master plan and urged the government to mandate EV-ready building codes in urban planning to ensure long-term sustainability.

FBI Reports 2nd "Biological Material" Smuggling Case In Less Than A Week
Washington: A Chinese researcher from Wuhan, from where Covid-19 is suspected to have spread to the world, has been arrested for allegedly trying to smuggle "biological materials" into the US in a second such incident in less than a week. The FBI arrested Chengxuan Han, a PhD student, in Detroit for sending four parcels with "biological materials" to the US. Not much is known about the alleged content of the parcels except that it is related to roundworms. She has been accused of sending four packages of "biological material" from China to four persons working at a lab at the University of Michigan in the US. Despite initially making false statements to federal agents about the packages, she confessed during questioning by the FBI and Customs officials. She had erased her electronic device a day before her questioning, said the FBI director. "Upon arriving at the Detroit Metropolitan Airport on June 8, Han allegedly made false statements to federal officials regarding the packages she had previously mailed and had erased her electronic device just days prior. In a follow-up interview, Han admitted to sending the packages and lying about their contents," he said in a post. In the June 4 incident, two Chinese nationals - Zunyong Liu, 34, and Yunqing Jian, 33 - were accused of smuggling Fusarium graminearum, classified as a potential agroterrorism weapon in scientific literature. It could destroy crops worth billions and cause vomiting, liver damage, and reproductive issues in humans and livestock. Liu, a researcher in China, had brought the fungus into the US while visiting his girlfriend Jian in July 2024, allegedly for research at a University of Michigan lab where Jian worked, according to the FBI complaint. With two such smuggling incidents being reported in less than two weeks, Mr Patel accused the Chinese Communist Party of working relentlessly to undermine American research institutions. But the FBI and other federal agencies are focused on cracking down on such pathogen smuggling operations, he added.

Washington: Khaby Lame, the world's most-followed social media star on TikTok, is making waves for all the wrong reasons. The TikToker with 162 million followers was reportedly detained by the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Nevada last Friday for overstaying his visa, but was released the same day after being allowed a "voluntary departure". "US Immigration and Customs Enforcement detained Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, a citizen of Italy, June 6, at the Harry Reid International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada, for immigration violations," the ICE said in a statement. The agency said that Lame entered the United States on April 30 and "overstayed the terms of his visa," following which he was detained but was released the same day. The Italian national, who is a UNICEF goodwill ambassador, "has since departed the US." Lame had not immediately posted publicly about the incident as of Tuesday morning. However, Barron Trump's close aide, social media influencer Bo Loudon, posted about the development on X, claiming that Lame had been arrested in Las Vegas and was being held at the Henderson Detention Centre. Calling Lame an "illegal alien," Loudon alleged that he was the one who alerted authorities about Lame's visa status. "I discovered he was illegal, who overstayed an invalid VISA, evaded taxes, and I personally took action to have him deported," he wrote in his post.
