Dhami to Gift Athletes a Boost, Sports to Flourish and Thrive

Construction of 23 Sports Academies and a Sports University progressing rapidly in eight cities
Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, in the fifth year of his tenure, is set to gift not just one but two major initiatives for the development of sports and athletes. The first is the establishment of a Sports University in Haldwani, with preparations underway to lay the foundation stone on Sports Day. The second is the opening of 23 sports academies across the state. These academies will be established in eight cities including Dehradun, Haridwar, and Haldwani, where sports activities were held and infrastructure was developed during the National Games.
These initiatives are expected to bring two key benefits:
1. Better maintenance of the sports infrastructure already created.
2. A strong platform for training athletes.
In the fourth year of Chief Minister Dhami's tenure, Uttarakhand made a significant leap in the field of sports. The grand hosting of the National Games greatly enhanced the state's stature in the sports world. CM Dhami is committed to maintaining this positive momentum in his fifth year. Whether it is the construction of the Sports University in Haldwani or the opening of 23 sports academies in eight cities, both projects are progressing rapidly. The notification for the university has already been issued, and the government is working swiftly to implement both major projects.
Two Major Steps That Brought Glory
01 – 38th National Games
In Uttarakhand's silver jubilee year, the successful hosting of the 38th National Games on its soil was one of the Dhami government's biggest sports achievements. It was a grand event, and Uttarakhand's athletes also delivered an excellent performance. In the previous National Games held in Goa, the state won only 24 medals. This time, it scored a century of medals and secured the 7th position in the medal tally. The event also led to the expansion of sports facilities and the creation of world-class infrastructure, which will be a milestone in the field of sports.
02 – New Sports Policy
The new sports policy announced in 2021 focused especially on encouraging athletes. It includes a provision of incentives ranging from ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore for Olympic medal winners. Athletes who win medals in international and national competitions are being offered government jobs. The incentive amount has been doubled and scholarships are also being awarded. A unique aspect of this policy is that even participating in major tournaments makes an athlete eligible for incentives — regardless of whether they win a medal or not.
'It is a matter of great pride that Uttarakhand is now being recognized as a land of sports. After the grand hosting of the National Games, the state has developed a positive sports environment. The morale of athletes is high, and they are performing well. The government will continue to take big decisions for the development of sports and implement them effectively.'

Telangana kickboxers seek state support to further international goals: Harsha & Naisha prove their mettle at national level

HYDERABAD: Kickboxing may not be as popular as cricket or badminton, but Telangana kickboxers are proving their mettle at the national level and are hoping that their achievements get the recognition it deserves. Meet 30-year-old Harsha Ratnakar and Naisha Bajaj, who are braving the odds to keep the state and country's flag flying. The game does not figure in the list of Olympic sports and as such the boxers are struggling for want of financial support, proper infrastructure and a support system to realise their dream. Both are part of the Telangana contingent that returned with 21 medals at the recently-concluded National kickboxing championship in Raipur, Chhattisgarh. Harsha won the lone gold for the state in the -81kg category and Naisha won a silver in the full contact kickboxing event in the 70+kg category. These medals are one of the many in their impressive trophy cabinet. Both want to represent India in the upcoming World championship scheduled to be held in Abu Dhabi in November. But lack of support from the state is weighing them down. Harsha, who took up the sport as a 16-year-old inspired by action movies and WWE, made a mark at the state and national meets before he took a six-year break to focus on preparing for the UPSC exam. He then won six consecutive gold medals at the state level and two gold and a bronze in Nationals on his comeback in 2022. He also won two silver and a bronze in the international events — Indian Open International Championship in 2022, 2024 and 2025 editions. Harsha and Naisha train with coach Suresh Patil at the Iskimos Kickboxing Academy in Somajiguda and they said their hopes of representing India in the World championship look remote in the current scenario. 'To compete in an international tournament abroad, we need at least Rs 2 to 3 lakh per tournament. If it is an international event in India, we need around Rs 80,000. We are spending from our pocket now to compete in Nationals and other tournaments in the country. But we want to win medals for the country abroad,' said Naisha, who was pushed into the sport in 2014 by her fitness-conscious mother. Naisha was just seven then. Naisha also boasts of an impressive medal haul — gold at the 3rd and 4th Indian International championship in 20204 and 2025 and a silver from the same event in 2022. Both Harsha and Naisha hope kickboxing will be in the Olympic fold so that they can win medals for the country. Till then, they are ready to battle inside and outside the ring.

PV downs Miyazaki, Unnati beats Gilmour

Double Olympic medallist P V Sindhu overcame world number six Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan to make a promising start to her campaign at the China Open Super 1000 badminton tournament here on Wednesday. Sindhu, a former world champion, prevailed 21-15, 8-21, 21-17 over the 2022 world junior champion Miyazaki in 62 minutes. 'It was a much-awaited win for me. The first round was very important for me to cross. It was three games (contest) and even in the third set, it was important for me to take the lead from the beginning because one side was very disadvantaged,' Sindhu said. 'So, it started off really good, but in the second game, it was hard for me to control. And in the third game, it was important that I take the lead and maintain that. 'It was important for me to win these matches so that it will also give me a moral boost and also that confidence. Because sometimes I've been coming close, yet I've been losing. I need to continue this tempo and keep going.' The 30-year-old from Hyderabad will now face fellow Indian Unnati Hooda, a winner of two super 100 titles at the 2022 Odisha Masters and 2023 Abu Dhabi Masters.
